“We liked this Merida hotel the best”
Reviewed July 10, 2012

Several features make this hotel ideal for a three-night stay. First, the buildling was once someone's hacienda, so it has lovingly collected wrought iron articles everywhere you look. Columns and capitols, arcades, indoor garden with swimming pool, good restaurant breakfast, lunch, and supper. The best feature is that it is on the corner across from a small park and another block from the city park and its surrounding colonial buildings and arcades, not to mention the cathedral. Travel agents and car rentals are just next door. Walk the other direction and watch the mariache band and people dancing in the plaza across the street on Saturday morning. The street festival on weekends is another attraction. The location of the Casa del Balam (House of the Jaguar) is very good for older people who have trouble walking for several blocks to reach the old town center and its park benches, where you can watch families strolling through the park and strike up conversations with very nice people.

Room Tip: Take what is available.

I took a master suite. Before booking I called the hotel and asked if it is noisy. I was told that the hotel is quiet. The reality: the noise from the street gets in freely and upsetting. the hotel itself has some old style charm but is in a state of maintainance more fit for a motel 6 than for a hotel. Breakfast is the same every day and low amounts and quality. The AC unit is very strong and noisy. Even at low setting the temperature is bellow , but way bellow confort levl (did I forget to say it only has 3 settings?) The room itself is an updateld kind of colonial room, charming to see in a museum but not so pleasant o leave in. the staff is at the limit of rude and only hunts for tips, no real good service. The location is prettygood, a block away from the main square and from Chaya Maya.

Room Tip: To choose a good room go to another hotel

My partner and myself spent 3 nights at Casa del Balam. For me it was a first time at this beautiful turn of the century hotel. The staff were very nice. Breakfast was awesome. I enjoyed the salsa piccante that the chef conjures up. Very close to Catedral de San Lldefenso, Museum of Modern art, some brilliant eateries and cafes. The hotel is at the heart of the cultural side of Merida. The rooms were large and the decor was early 20th century.....our room overlooked part of the unversity....I will be back...

We stayed there for 5 days from April 27, 2012. This is a great hotel, it was an hacienda at one time. It is at a perfect location, only 2 bocks from the main plaza. The rooms were pretty large and extremely clean. Personnel were very nice and went out of their ways to make our stay a pleasant one. The rooms included a full breakfast, so that was a nice touch. The pool area is nice and relaxing and with uppers 90's weather, it was great. We would definitely go back to this place.

We stayed at this charming and beautiful hotel for 5 nights, and it was a wonderderful treat. The facility is very clean, the air conditioning is excellent and the decor beautiful. The price was reasonable and we stayed on the 6th floor. The breakfast in the courtyard was excellent, and the waiters were cheerful, friendly and eager to make us feel welcome. We made our reservations directly with the hotel, and they were very helpful in helping us with tour reservations. The location of the hotels is terrific, within walking distance of the Zocalo, Cathedral and historic government buildings and university. We stayed in this hotel the first time abut 10 years ago and when we return to Merida, this will be our hotel again.

Colonial type of hotel with charming rooms and centrally located. The restauruant is very good for breakfast and quite resonably priced. The staff were very friendly and helpful

Room Tip: Go for a superior room if possible. Also be careful with the air con as it was noisy the fist night...

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Casa del Balam is one of the oldest and most distinguished hotels in Merida and the Yucatan Peninsula, it's also one of the few original Mexican Art Deco houses left in the city. The hotel was built in 1970 incorporating facets of the original home of Fernando Barbachano Peon, pioneer of Tourism in Mexico. His daughter, Ms. Carmen Barbachano Gomez Rul (who was also involved on the family business), left the original facade and selected the name of "Casa del Balam" (Mayan words for "house of the jaguar") to honor his father nickname "balam" due to his visionary sharp business mind. Ms. Barbachano was very devoted of the colonial period and decorated the house accordingly. Big wooden furniture, rocking chairs and wrought iron accessories were part of her fine selection. She had envisioned a place where every touch could softly spoke of the serene ambiance of the city, and where friends could be made instead of just mere clients. When looking at the amazing interior of this Casona and experiencing the warm specialized service of its personnel, one can easily understand that Ms. Barbachano did accomplish her desire of uniqueness, and in a very exquisite way! ... more   less
