Hotel El Conquistador
Ranked #41 of 106 Hotels in Merida
Reviewed July 13, 2012

We stay here on business once every year. The Saturday and Sunday brunch is unsurpassed for the variety and flavor of Yucatecan cooking. Besides the buffet, a chef grills for you fresh fish fillets, steaks, pork chops, fried eggs for breakfast, and omelets. A piano player adds to the atmosphere. The lobby is spacious with seating areas. The front "porch" is also a pleasant place to sit and watch the horse carriages and bike riders along the Paseo Montejo with its old, gleaming white restored mansions of former hennequin producers. The archaeological museum is across the street, and the old town center is a ten-block walk away. The business center is open till 5. The rooms are all the same--spaceous, nicely decorated with a nice bathroom. The marble halls are cool and dark, lighted with a window at each end. I'm always glad to go to El Conquistador and get a sopa de lima to start the rest of the day.

Room Tip: Take any room available.

Wherever you stay go here for weekend brunch, or any day for breakfast, costs $16 US for the full buffet (you will never eat again). I love Merida and stayed at the Conquistador for 10 days in February. I selected it after walking from the Plaza Central to Ave Montejo looking at rooms in at least 8 other hotels. I chose it because it is a friendly Mexican hotel with good sized rooms and nice bathrooms. I had a 6th floor balcony with view of the city. Swimming pool on rooftop has spectacular view of the whole area and you can swim laps in it -- most hotel pools there too small. It's the only hotel in town with a restaurant that looks out on Ave Montejo, the most elegant part of Merida, which adds to the breakfast experience. Mattress, pillows were comfortable (which counts a lot with me), good lighting, room service was good, room was cleaned daily, wi fi was free and worked well, laptop was safe out in open, staff knew me by name and were helpful and sweet. If you speak any Spanish, they will love you to death for it (they speak English too). Having Wal-Mart a few blocks away very handy. Negotiated a 15% discount for the longer stay. I also stayed at the Hyatt for 2 nights, very nice. I personally prefer the Conquistador and being on the Avenue. Easy walk or quick cab or bus to Plaza Central. I'll go back. It's a little older but it is a nice size, not too big, not too small, solid hotel, full of Mexican tourists and families enjoying this great city, lots of European tourists as well. I enjoyed the terrific maragaritas and had dinner there twice, but tended to go elsewhere for dinner, including the little cafe across the street, to Rosas & Xocholate, the great new fusion restaurant a few blocks up, or to the many other dining places in the city center. Anthropological museum is across the street, and every Saturday night at the end of the Avenue is an outdoor fair and concert. It's a safe city to wander around in, and I say this after being there by myself walking all over even late at night.

Old rooms, passable food, bad service. It would be a normal 3 star.

I have been to the El Conquisator in Merida during a Yucatan round trip. In a nutshell: This is the filthiest place I have ever been to. Could actually be an OK hotel if they would pay more attention to cleaning and replace linens, pillows and towels more often.

General impression: At first the hotel seemed nice. Located in one of the prestigious streets in Merida. A little loud when you have a room to the street, but that comes with the territory. Also nice lobby area.

Cleanliness & rooms: This is where the problem is. The rooms and the furniture seem to be a bit old, but still acceptable. Also they seem to have newer renovated rooms according to the photos here - we had one of the older ones I guess. The rooms (and we changed once) were however not well cleaned. Dust under the bed and in some corners. The bed was disgusting. Numerous stains and hairs in the linen. Pillows absolutely terrible. While the covers were clean the pillows had several huge yellow stains (like 1-2 inches in diameter) from earwax or some other stuff. Not only one but all. And they were smelling. Bathroom was also not very well cleaned and the water in the shower would not really flow off, leaving the feet in some brown puddle during showering. Towels also had stains and were so old that they were already worn off at the edges. Friends that were in the same group reported similar experiences.

We asked the cleaning service to provide new lines and pillows. After this is was somewhat OK at least for the beds.

As said above this could actually be an OK hotel if they would pay more attention to cleaning and replace linens, pillows and towels more often.

Food: Had dinner and breakfast. Dinner was a disaster (soup, something that was supposed to be pork with mushrooms, dessert). I am usually not picky, but didn't eat it. There were some Mexican people in there not part of our group who had sandwiches with fries, which looked quite good. Breakfast next morning was good.

The hotel has a marvelous location in the Paseo of Montejo.

The hotel rates themselves as 4 stars, but when in room, frankly, don't deserve that many stars. The furniture is old, the bathroom not well equiped, poor view of the city in the room.

Their breakfast buffet is famous and totally worth it.
