Another one night stop on our grand tour of Mexico. It is very centrally located and, as such, is geat for getting out and about to see the city. The city itself is quite low-rise and I was in a room on the 10th floor of the hotel which gave me a lovely panoramic view of the city. The hotel has a very nice swimming pool and the main public areas are very nicely laid out. My room was very comfortable.
The room service menu looked good but I was tired after a long day and didn't feel like eating. The breakfast buffet in the morning had a huge range of foods most of which looked more like a lunch or dinner buffet. I don't know who would fancy having paella or other main meals for breakfast?

Room Tip: I would say on the higher floors the better, for the panoramic views.

My wife and I have been staying at hotel el Castellano since it reopened (and before it closed).about 20 plus years ago. This is a hotel in the center of all the action. It isn't luxurious just clean and more than satisfactory. The personnel are very friendly, the restaurant is excellent for breakfast and you can walk to any of the activities in the city. Ayunamiente and Parque central are a 5 minute walk. Restaurants Pop's and La Chaya are within 3 minutes walking. Parque Santa Lucia is right around the corner and Parque De La Madres is a 5 minute walk. Staying on Paseo de Montejo takes you away from the center and makes it necessary to take a taxi to visit the center of town. We frequently take the bus to Progresso for ceviche. There on the beach we prefer the restaurant Flamingo. St. Bonnet is also quite good. A round trip (redondo) on the bus is less than $3.00. We have many friends in Merida for having traveled there for so many years. El Castellano is, for us, just perfect.

Fully concur with other poor ratings.

Disco went on until 5.00 am.

However the most important problem, and I am amazed that nobody has mentioned this, is that the Hotel is a fire trap. With an un-enclosed main stair any fire at ground level would immediately smoke log all the bedroom corridors. Bedrooms, themselves, do not have self closing fire-resistant doors and are fitted with hold-open devices - appalling standards for one of the largest hotels in the city!

Stayed in this hotel for one night during my tour of Mexico, it has a perfect position in Merida: just a few blocks away from the main plaza. The hotel is clean, our room had a nice view on the cathedral and it features a free parking (perfect if you have rented a car) and free wifi. It is clean, but the rooms are quite old. The buffet breakfast has plenty of choiches and the staff is nice. I'd stay again there.

We stayed for one night in this hotel on a Thomas Cook Legends of The Yucatan Tour. We were a family of eight within a larger group of two dozen people. Of the three hotels we stayed in, one in Valladolid and the other in Uxmal, this came out tops. It is a city hotel so it is more functional and less atmospheric than those you find in smaller towns or next to archeological sites, but it ticked most boxes for us. We were several storeys up and there is one cramped and narrow lift serving the entire building which is a bind, but the room was spacious, clean and had a great view. The hotel is well located for exploring Mérida. The best aspect of this hotel was the food - the evening buffet was lovely and the breakfast buffet sensational. So much choice and so well presented. We liked this hotel and thought it was good value for money.

My wife and I are traveling around the Yucatan Peninsula and parts of Central America. We spent the weekend in Merida's Historical Central District area. We needed a hotel that was safe, somewhat modern, inexpensive and fairly well located near the Central District area. El Castellano satisfied everyone of those criteria's. It is approximately 4 or so Mexico blocks from Plaza Grande and all its entertainment. We found and booked it off of Kayak.com. It was moderately priced and offered the feel of a modern hotel. The rooms were clean, great water pressure, our bed was very comfortable, the AC worked well and the WiFi worked as well as any other hotel/resort we have stayed in before. The service was professional and they let us check in almost 3 hours early. Check out was just as easy. If you are a person, couple or family that likes the Carlton Ritz or Hyatt Regency style 5 plus star hotels and/or resorts, then pay the price and stay there. This is not your horty torty place. This high rise hotel is a little older, but is nothing to shy away from. They did turn down our bed and left a light on when we came back from the evening affairs. Its a nice place and works great for the middle aged adults who like comfort at an affordable price. AGAIN, this is not a 5 star hotel, but I/we have stayed in 4 star places that were worst than the El Castellano that cost much more.

Room Tip: It really depends if you are going to be in your room a lot. Our room was on the second floor. The v...

We enjoyed our short stay at this hotel... It's got all that a traveller is looking for. El Castellano is central, comfortable and a good value for money. The room was big and the fact that you get another sink outside the bathroom makes it the more comfortable especially when you're sharing the room with 2 other people. The food was so good that we were sorry that we didn't get to stay for at least another night.
