An excellent place to visit to see what made early Merida rich and what the gentry spent their pesos on

Beautiful museum, well worth visiting and enjoying! Beautiful old "green gold" mansion! Enjoyed it tremendously!

The Museum of Anthropology is located in El Palacio Cantón, an unbelievably ornate mansion built 1909-1911 for the Cantón family who owned the railway and many haciendas (estates) in the Yucatán. His workers only made a few pesos a day, so that fact takes some of the wow away from visiting this incredible building. The marble stairway is a piece of artwork itself, coming all the way from Italy and hand-carved. The photo gallery shows the work-in-progress and the history of the Cantón family. The upper floor houses a collection of hipiles, the hand-embroidered dress of the Mayan ladies. The variety of styles represented is amazing. Located on the corner of Paseo Montejo and 43rd. Definitely worth a visit.

This local museum offers and insight into life in
Merida over the past through the life of one of its
most prominent citizens but the jewel in the crown is
the local collection of traditional costume

The Palacio Canton is home to some of the finest collections of pre-Columbian material in the Yucatan - or maybe it used to be?? On our recent visit almost none of it was on display. We were surprised and disappointed.
