one whole block square zocolo is a great spot to people watch and enjoy and take in Merida...right across from the incredible cathedral worth the trip all by itself

You'll have to visit this spot at some point if you're in Merida -- unless you completely avoid the center of town. It's huge, it's a prime meeting place, and several important/interesting buildings surround the square. You'll find a scene every night of the week. Watch as the trovatore trios array themselves for hire around the square -- you might even see them getting hired as they pile into a car and head off to someone's important occasion. They'll play for you right on the street if you like -- ask them how much for one song?

Walked to and around the Plaza on several occasions. Many cultural activities observed. Met friendly, English fluent citizens.

The Gran Plaza is beautiful, with many trees and plants, well lit and has comfortable concrete benches shaped in an "S" that we have never seen in any other place we have visited. It is surrounded by 2 colonnades that include the Palacio Nacional and the Municipal Government buildings. There is always some sort of activity or entertainment happening on a daily basis, On Sundays the local vendors erect their stands and restaurants around the perimeter of the plaza to attract tourists to buy their goods or try some of the local yummy foods. Very colorful

On our way through Mexico we spent two nights in the nice town of Merida. We chose a Hotel close to the Plaza Grande (Zocalo) because that's the place where the heart of most Mexican Cities is.

The plaza in Merida is a very big one. Most places of intererest are around or close to it (the Cathedral or the Governor's Palace for example).
Streets and sidewalks surround the Zocalo. There's loads of shops and food/drinking options. The Plaza itself is very green and spacious and offers lots of places to sit down and relax a bit. There aren't many street vendors around, so you won't be hassled much.

Even in the evening the plaza is still busy. It's just where the action is. On weekends there's even free live music and dance (see the pic).
Besides the great Mercado the Plaza is surely the place where you have to be. If it's for a walk, to shop or to sit down and grab a drink and do some people watching.

A good place for a quick snack is the "Las Quekas" - next to the Cathedral - where you get nice Quesadillas with countless fillings. In the evening just sit down anywhere to get a glass of wine or some cocktail. But be aware that many places here offer the same meals...mostly the touristy-kind of "mexican" food. But for a few drinks they're fine enough.
