“Beautiful Building, Beautiful Murals”
Reviewed April 2, 2013

We did not take the tour but wandered around on our own one evening. What a gorgeous building and the murals are amazing. We really enjoyed reading about the history.

“Fabulous Murals”
Reviewed March 24, 2013

The murals by Mexican artist Fernando Castro Pacheco are amazing. Apparently they were executed over a period of about 24 years. When you see them, you´ll believe it. They´re large and tell the story of the Yucatán from the beginning of what is known about the Mayan people to the 19th century. Some of the paintings are hard to "read" with brushstrokes of black covering much of the area. I´m sure the intention is to portray the suffering of the people; but without a lot of contrast, it´s not easy to distinguish the shapes in the paintings. Still very moving!

The upper floor is a beautiful room in itself lined with high, decorated ceilings, gorgeous hand-carved windows & doors, black & white marble tiles on the floor, and more paintings.

“Exquisite murals”
Reviewed March 21, 2013

Right on the Plaza Grande in Merida, so easy to find and very accessible. It is free and there are good washrooms there because it is a municipal building. Good to remember when you are traipsing around Merida for the day. The murals are terrific, and the history depicted in the side salon with paintings is incredible. You must not miss this part of the building, give yourself enough time to read the historical timelines. We spend about an hour when we go into this beautiful colonial building.

“great history lesson”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

We didn't take an official tour, but simply strolled through on our own - the plaques for each painting or mural were great in explaining different periods of the history of the Yucatan peninsula.

“Great murals”
Reviewed March 16, 2013

The walls are covered in murals that tell the history of the Yucatan from the Mayans to the Spanish conquest. Very interesting, like being in a museum. Beautiful old building.
