We walked into the courtyard and were wowed by the architecture. Upstairs are murals depicting the life of the Mayan population. They were absolutely breathtaking and inspiring.

Stopped here one evening as they were still open at 9:30...great murals and art on the 2nd floor so don't just view the first floor murals.

The Governor's Palace is the green building on one side of the Plaza Grande. It's free to get in, and it's definitely worth a stop because there are some very interesting murals depicting the history of Merida and the Yucatan, painted by some of the most prominent artists in the area's history. You can see everything in less than an hour.

Stroll in and see the beautiful inner courtyard, massive staircase, humongous mayan murals above the staircase, and a great example of big government spending that somehow now seems worth every penny. The highlight is the salon upstairs that has several huge paintings of local historical figures--both Mayan and European--and interesting plaques about their significance. The salon itself is very very beautiful, has great views of the Cathedral square, and you can imagine lavish parties being thrown in that very room 100 years ago.

As a structure, the building is of average architectural interest. The 40 year-old murals are of interest more for the fact that they are historically honest and more Maya-centric than those of previous generations.

What made it exciting for us was the fact that earlier that day the new president of Mexico had delivered a speech there--wearing a guayabera instead of a suit--and announced that a high-speed railroad would be built between Merida and the Riviera Maya.

Later, watching the news (Mexican) on television, it was fun seeing the site of the speech and knowing that we had been walking there only hours after the event.
