“Superb stay, great location”
Reviewed March 8, 2013

This was the last place we stayed in on our 17 day tour of the Yucatan, in total we stayed in 8 different hotels and this is the only one we have awarded top marks. The owners are very passionate about their business and this is obvious once you have been there. Clean modern rooms, spacious bathroom with beautiful shower, all set within a tranquil surrounding close to the main plaza.
Jan and Rita are a wealth of information on the local area and genuinely nice people who's main priority is that you have a great stay.

We stayed here two nights last month and highly recommend it. Jan, the owner, couldn't have been more helpful, greeting us with an offer of beer or a cold drink and sharing info about Merida with us--ruins, restaurants, haciendas, etc--as well as marking everything on our map. Our room was upstairs and was gorgeous: spacious, hacienday-style decor with a sofa, table and chairs plus a nice comfy bed. The bathroom was huge and beautiful, done with local tile. Great showerhead, too!
This hotel is in the quiet residential neighborhood of Santiago, just a few blocks from the main plaza. It's an easy walk to the historical district and surrounding artesan shopping areas. We unwittingly arrived in the middle of Carnaval, which meant the city tours weren't operating and many of the sites we had planned to see were closed. Do visit the ruins of Dzibilchaltun, just north of the city, and plan to take a dip in the cenote there.
We didn't feel like going out for a big dinner our first night there, so walked a couple blocks to the Santiago Plaza and picked up a sandwich to go, plus some snacks at the Oxxo on the corner. The next night we took up Jan on his suggestion to try the Chaya Maya--a casual restaurant nearby where we tried the local specialties. Good food!
Breakfasts at the hotel included fresh squeezed orange juice, fruits, yogurts, breads and eggs, cooked and served by two sweet ladies who also clean the rooms.
We enjoyed our stay here and found it to be the perfect base for day trips. My only suggestion would be to have some kind of sign outside the gate with the name of the hotel. The street was confusing to find, and because it's such a residential area, there's no indication that a hotel is located there.

Room Tip: The upstairs rooms are very large and have a nice view of the pool (which was always quiet while we...

My husband and I stayed at the Merida Santiago for 12 days recently and found it to be a small oasis in the middle of the city. It is only about a 10 minute walk to downtown but when you are staying with Jan and Rita, the rest of the world is swept away in their lovely calm casa. Jan is a wonderful Dutch ex pat who loves a good conversation. He is the perfect host, always willing to help with the smallest detail. Rita lights up the world with her beautiful smile. And of course, Gio, the lap dog who thinks he is a guard dog, is always ready to play. It was great to see Jan and Rita not only treat their guests with the greatest respect but also their staff. They really make you feel as if you are staying with a family.

The rooms at the hotel are spacious and very clean, and come equipped with fans, air conditioner, flat screen TV, wifi and mini bar. The decor is lovely, and the bathrooms are huge. Dona Ana and her lovely daughter Kenya keep the place spic and span and also provide extremely reasonable laundry service. They also cooked delicious Yucatecan breakfasts each day consisting of fresh fruit, juice, coffee, a main course and dessert! We parked our rental car outside the hotel on the street and it was perfectly safe. We always felt safe walking around Merida even at night.

We were able to take a wonderful cooking class from a Mexican couple who run it in their home and this was arranged by Jan for us, as well he booked our trip to Uxmal. We were completely happy with both arrangements. Jan is a wealth of information and he is eager to share it with his guests. We were given advice on places to eat and to visit. I would highly recommend staying at the Hotel Merida Santiago on your next visit to Merida, you will not regret it.

Room Tip: Room #4 is the largest.

My parents and I stayed here for 3 nights in late January. It’s a small boutique hotel located in a quiet neighborhood close to downtown (15-minute walk or a $20 pesos taxi ride). It has only 4 rooms, each of them beautifully decorated with local handicrafts. Beds are comfortable, and have all the things you are looking for (fans, air conditioning, safety deposit box, mosquito netting, TV, minifridge… you can even hang a hammock!). The bathroom is huge, it has two sinks and a jacuzzi.

But what really makes the difference is the personal service offered by Rita and Jan. When we arrived, Jan offered a couple of beers –on the house– and provided lots of advice on what to see in Merida, where to eat and where to buy handicrafts. He also helped us to make reservations for a tour to Hacienda Sotuta de Peon and for a restaurant.

The breakfast is delicious and it includes juice, fruit, a hot dish (the omelette with chaya was great!) and dessert!

I would definitely come back here, even just to say hello to Rita and Jan! :)

We were towards the end of our whirlwind trip to Mexico, quite tired from running around to learn, see, explore what Mexico has to offer.
This little Casa was a wonderful place to unwind, even though we wanted to see as much as we could of Merida.
When we arrived, Jan took some time to explain about the place, Merida etc.
Not many inn keepers do it. And from the glowing reviews, he is doing it with every guest who arrives at this wonderful place.
Rita was a delight to talk to as well.
The breakfast is very good. The accomodation was roomy the bathroom almost the size of the bedroom. We chose a room on the ground floor (at this point we were tired of carrying our luggage to a 2nd floor).
Highly recommended. It is 10 minutes walk to the center of town

If you are planning a trip to Merida, you should try to book a room with Jan and Rita at their Santiago Merida B&B. Santiago is a quiet neighborhood just outside the main historic district, and it’s a perfect location to explore Merida or the surrounding areas. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and the pool and bar/dining room are charming. If you choose not to use the A/C, the jalousies, high ceilings and fans keep things cool. The decor is tropical and local. The ambience is casual and relaxed. It’s an oasis of calm in an already laid back place. The internet was just a bit sketchy in the room, but it worked fine by the pool and dining area, and Jan said that they were expecting to upgrade the service soon.

The owners make you feel right at home, and are always ready with advice, suggestions and tips to make your stay special. When we told Jan that we wanted to watch the Carnaval parade the following evening, he actually went to a restaurant on the main square and booked a table with the perfect vantage point to observe the fesitivities away from the crowds.

The property is about fifteen to twenty minutes from the Merida airport, and the cab fare to the hotel is a fixed 180mp, and slightly less for the return. If you have a rental car, you can park right in front of the hotel on the street, there’s no restriction or charge. Merida is very safe and the locals are friendly. There is a market square by the church about a block and a half from the hotel with numerous vendors selling local foods and dishes for alfresco dining on the square, table service and menus are available. We took advantage of this late one night when we didn’t feel like walking all the way to the main plaza and it was very good. Our favorite place for dessert was a small shop on the south side of Calle 59 between 60 and 62 called “Todo Coco, el Mono Feliz”, the “happy monkey”. They have all kinds of coconut treats, and the coconut sorbet was heavenly. It’s very small and easy to miss, and we would not have known about it without a tip from Jan. We feel like we have a new second home now in Merida, and we look forward to our next visit.

From the moment we walked in, tired and dehydrated from our four hour drive from Cancun, we were treated like family. Jan, the innkeeper, helped us relax with a beer by the poolside and stories about Merida. The morning breakfast were fresh, tasty, and a great time to meet the fellow travelers at the hotel. Jan and his wife Rita gave us excellent ideas for day trips in Merida and outside of Merida including museums, restaurants, cenotes, ruins and more. The rooms were quiet, spacious, comfortable, and well decorated. We loved their little dog, Gio. Hotel Merida Santiago was a little oasis.
