I think the best way to experience a place is to stay with a local. But when you don't have a friend who lives in a city, second best is to find a hotel that feels like you are visiting a friend more than a hotel. Merida Santiago is this type of a place. You walk into what feels like a living room, get greeted by the host, given a drink on the house, and then get escorted to the inner courtyard by the pool to enjoy a beer and get a run-down of what to do while in town. This feel of staying with friends combined with all the conveniences of a hotel (large room, comfy beds, huge bathroom with a jacuzzi) made Merida Santiago on of our favorite accommodations on a 8-day road trip through Mexico. They really care about guest's experience!

We have visited Merida multiple times over the past three years searching for the right piece of real estate to build a modern Mexican home. While combing the many colonias on foot, with friends in cars and on bicycles, each year we've chosen Jan and Rita's, Merida Santiago B&B, as our small oasis of rest, relaxation and rejuvenation. We've done so, time and time again, because we know we will receive the type of hospitality we've come to expect after years of travel and the expert assistance we depend on while traversing this sultry and complicated city and its conventions.

Jan, Rita and their little dog, Geo, offer a welcoming, colorful environment of comfortable, spacious rooms, generous bathrooms, air-conditioning, free wifi, and freshly prepared breakfasts, all surrounding a refreshing pool right in the heart of Colonia Santiago, a easy walk to the center of town.

We know there are many good accommodation options in Merida but, if you are like us, you'll look no further than Merida Santiago B&B.

My wife and I stayed with Jan and Rita at the end of January and loved the hotel. There are only four rooms, which makes a big difference in terms of getting to know Jan, Rita and the other guests. I won't repeat what others have said below except to strongly endorse the positive comments. We did have a bit of a problem with wireless in the rooms but when we sat in the main courtyard we got good reception. We would STRONGLY recommend a stay here if planning a trip to Merida.

We stayed at Hotel Boutique Merida Santiago for four nights in January, 2013. It is a wonderful oasis in the midst of an active city, surprisingly quiet and very comfortable. Jan and Rita have done an excellent job of renovating the property to a very modern standard that is tasteful and functional, but not overly elaborate. There are comfortable beds, very nice bathrooms, and safes in the rooms. Our room had a shower and a jetted tub that was very nice. There is no need for us to suggest things to do in Merida here because Jan will have great advice for you based on your interests and on what is happening when you are there. While there are supermarkets nearby, we would recommend that you indulge in breakfast at the hotel, which is ample, varied, and authentically Mexican. But the real secret of so many five star ratings is Gio (the dog), the cutest, friendliest greeter in the world.

Stayed for one night. The room was cleaned and nicely decorated. The owner gave us very detailed information about the city and advice on where to eat and shop upon our arrival. Helpful but not intrusive. We had a disappointing experience with a B&B we stayed earlier during our trip but this one turned out to be pretty nice and comfortable.
There was a slight problem with the wifi in our room which the signal was receivable intermittently. We didn't try the breakfast as it costs USD8 which was a bit expensive to us, the owner kindly offered us a coffee or juice before we left though we skipped as we were a bit tight with time for our bus. We had a slight discount for our room when we paid the bill at check out which was great!

Overall a pleasant stay.
