“Great location, super friendly staff and good value”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 5, 2010

We loved our stay at Zocalo hostel. We had a private room with two double beds, private bathroom and two fans. It was wonderful! The staff are so friendly, on our first day we arrived at 7am, there was no problems for us to check in, have a sleep, wake up and have the (awesome) free breakfast! When we came back after a full day of sightseeing there was lasagna and salad which they owners had cooked which looked amazing and they didn't hesitate to offer us some! And to top it off the location could not be better! Definitely stay here!
Just also want to note there is also a Zocalo 2 where other friends stayed which is the newer one and is meant to also be very good too.

Lucky for us, we messed up the dates on another place called the "No-Name". We asked the folks there for a suggestion and they gave us this one. And lucky for us, this one has it ALL. Charm, provided by the charming Irene who checked us into that KEWL 6 man dorm with a window that looks onto the court yard and the rest of the building.

But the charm keeps on coming as we met with Trina and her equally tourism-talented son Florian who can speak to everyone in their own language..(and saves cute little puppies in his spare time to boot! *no really*)

This wonderful colonial building is right on the main square where Sundays will bring a festival of dancers, food, gifts and a gathering of locals having as much fun as we were!
Location can't be matched; the travellers this place attracted were fantastic to know: as someone said elsewhere, its small enough to become a place where genuine friendships happen all the time; and it's the staff that sets this friendly pace! I even had some significant work to do during ourt 2 week Yucatan trip and never expected to get anything at all done while at *a hostel*: to my surprise, the environment was so relaxing and inspiring, that I actually finished ALL of my work over the course of a few days. Something I NEVER expected...But then again, Team Zocalo specializes in finding joy and happiness in the most unexpected ways: tours, info, great value with a terrific FREE buffet breakfast every morning, location, location, location...THE'VE GOT IT ALL!!!

Best news: they are currently working to open a 2nd place up by the Beaches near Progresso. If they get it even half as good as they've got it with Zocalo, look out, Yucatan, there's a new sheriff in town!

We're already planning to see Trina Florian, Irene and the rest of the Gang as soon as we possibly can!!!

In the meantime...WE LOVE YOU GUYS!!!

My friend and I loved our stay at Hostal Zocalo. The whole place only takes a couple dozen or so people, so it's not one of those awful gigantic hostels full of sceney backpackers looking for alcohol and hook-ups. The owners are a couple of hippies who hang out with you and tell you stories of their wild youth and travels. They're very hospitable; you get free breakfast included in your stay--tons of yummy fruit, cereal (very sugary, but tolerable), yogurt, milk, and juice, and you can make your own eggs in the communal kitchen.

The building an original colonial--it's gorgeous and very well-maintained--and it's right on the Plaza Grande downtown, so the location is ideal. The place was really homey...some couches and chairs make nice spots to read a book in the afternoon or evening. It was also very clean. The women's bathroom had an unpleasant smell, but everything was clean in there, too.

We had dorm beds our first night 'cause that was all that was available, and unfortunately, I got stuck with the one bed that's sort of awkwardly placed in the hallway at one end of the building. It was a little chilly and I didn't have much sound protection from the other people who were staying up a bit later than I was talking and drinking in the common area. I did ok though. And the next night we had a private room that was comfortable and clean and full of character with a sweet mural on the wall and doors that opened to a small balcony overlooking the Plaza Grande.

They have a couple parking spots available for free (we had rented a car) but they were in use so we parked on the street, and Zocalo's owner himself moved our car at 6 am so we wouldn't get towed or ticketed when the no parking zone started in the daytime.

I've stayed in a lot of hostels, and this one is up there on my list of best ever.

Zocalo is a great hostel on the main plaza in Merida. It's in lovely old building, full of light and space. We had a private room that was more than adequate, the only issue being that the bathroom was at the other end of the buiding and through a dorm room - that said the shared bathroom was always quiet with lots of hot water (it was cold when we were in Merida at the beginning of March).
The breakfast was amazing with a variety of fuit, cereal, fresh bread, eggs, cheese and ham or bacon most morning. Limitless coffee or tea. What makes the place though are the owners, Triona and Moses who are quite amazing in their dealing with guests. It's rare to come across people that run tourist accomodations who go so far out of their way to make you feel welcome. It really does feel as if the place is yours for the length of your stay and that you've become part of their family. Thank you both for your warmth and welcome.

Zocolo was a great hostel in a great location. The breakfast was the best I've ever had in 20 years of travel. It is right downtown on the main square so wvrything is right out in front of you,. Cool atmosphere, feels like Mexico.

Comfy, clean, with a great kitchen . The communal space is a long hallway with huge Spanish Colonial arched windows bursting with morning sun and flowers. The couches are so chill .The generous breakfast buffet will fix your hang over.
They have a website now and also have beach cabanas in a pristine palm jungle on the Gulf.
Zocalo has good deals on various private rooms (some with antique balconies )some tiny and cheap for the solo traveler........
Maybe book a night and ask to see your options when you arrive.
Do not miss Uxmal ruins when in Merida ( a cosmic day that will give you the Mayan Magic that greed, pushy vendors and crowds have drained from my beloved Chichenitza ) 9 AM and 10:30 AM departures with Oriente bus at 2nd class station. Grab a cab in front of the hostel.
Also see Dzibilchaltun ruins with swimming in a lovely cenote (30 min bus from station Progresso 5 blocks from Hostel)
Hola to Moses Trina and Florian( the owners ) from J the painter ! Thanks for the cappucinos , snacks and good vibes)

When we booked this hostel, we taught we were going to stay in a no frills place... What an amazing surprise when we walked in!!!
When you walk in, you are hit with this "homy" feeling with grand wide open space, bright colors and confy couches! The owners are amazing and so welcoming/generous! You get more than you pay for just with the atmosphere of the place, but also, the full access to the open-space kitchen area, the Continental breakfast and the wi-fi Internet access (which, sadly, was not working well when we were there).

PS: ask for a room facing the Parque. It's really worth the few more pesos. Don't hesitate to eat out on your balcony: it's so romantic at night!
