Can't beat Zocalo for location - right on the main historical square with lots of great sights, bars and restaurants nearby.
Our private double room was a disappointment - downstairs near the laundry and people could see in (room 15) as they walked down the at night when we had the light on (despite the young guy assuring us this wasn't the case when I expressed my concern on check in). Also as the room has only this mosquito netting for the upper half of the exterior wall, noise travels a lot - people in the night and early morning, you hear it all. Hot water is also hit and miss - sometimes you get warm water, others its just cold.
The hostel is beautiful and the breakfast was really good with lots of fresh fruit, cereal and omelettes. Maybe get a room upstairs in the main floor and you'd have a better time of it!

A comfortable place to stay in city centre. great location, the private room was spacious. Very comfortable bed and linen, I can see how on a warm night you could feel a lack of breeze as the room is a bit hidden, fortunately we had some cloudy days and cool nights. No views, only an internal patio. Everything seemed very clean, we did see two cockroaches in the room, but I´d like to add that in this case it has nothing to do with the cleaningness, more with the fact that you are in the middle of an old town, you´ll find smells and little bugs from old colonial sewage systems in any building there.
They where building something so we had a bit of noise since early morning, it worked out as an alarm clock to go out and explore, do ask before if you want to sleep in.
The staff where friendly, you get free wi-fi and can even use a Pc there.
Relaxed atmosphere, would definitively recommend staying here.

Room Tip: Biottom rooms are quieter, but front rooms have a view and balcony facing the main plaza

We just stayed here and trully liked it. The location was perfect. The staff was very nice and friendly. The breakfast was absolutely the best that I have ever seen and the staff cared that we would try everything!

Many reviews I looked at complained about it being dirty. I think as well that it could be more clean, but it might be related to being old and needing a little up-due as well. And please add mosquito nets too! There are so many!

Room Tip: ask for a room with a balcony

It's been one of the worst experiences I have ever had!!! This hostal for starters it's extremely dirty, the bathrooms, private rooms, and hall are always dirty. Plus, if you add to all of that bedbugs... NEVER STAY THERE. We stayed three nights, the first night we thought that we had a lot of mosquitoes, but the next night we woke up by a constant biting, there is where we thought that we where bitten by bedbugs. We where right... we stripped the bed and there they were!!!

Staying in that hostal has been one of the worst experiences in my life!

Our stay at Hostel Zocalo unfortunately started with not having our room available despite reservation. However, the staff was very helpful in arranging a hotel room across the street for which it covered the whole price. We could still use all facilities of the hostel. Starting off the breakfast was probably the best we have ever experienced in a hostel. Fresh fruit en masse, omlettes, pancakes, cereals, bread buns and typical spreads from sweet to savoury. There is also free drinking water even if you would like to fill up your bottle.
Our double room was very nice. King size bed and a beautiful balcony with view on the main plaza.
The bathroom facilities were a little bit lacking in cleanliness, however, the staff made an effort of regularily keeping them clean.
The location was perfect as it is situated directly on the main plaza and you can reach nearly everything by walking a few blocks.
Before we left we were handed a bunge of fresh fruit for us to take and plenty of water.
As two girls travelling with a suitcase, the effort the staff made to bring up and down our luggage was also very much appreciated.
All in all a great hostel for good value and worth a stay!

Room Tip: rooms facing the plaza can get quite noisy on the weeksends with the inhabitants celebrating their n...

I stayed in that wonderful place for two days, its right in the very center of the city Merida. The building where it is located is very unique and beautiful. LOCATION IS JUST PERFECT!!! THE VERY HEART OF MERIDA! There is a grand park in front and many other places to see. breakfast was wonderful every time, big variety of healhy food for any taste. Living conditions are very nice, comfortable and quiet. If you have lots of free time, you can go for the UNFORGETTABLE EXCURSIONS, ask at the hostel about it! And if you are going to Hostel Zocalo, you will meet so many wonderful people there, I AM SURE! I ENJOYED MY STAY THERE, SO YOU WILL ALSO!
