“best hostel ever”
Reviewed February 16, 2013

This is the best hostel i have ever seen Really large and good breakfast, inclusive in the price. The rooms are clean and they have nice beds... There is a common area with kitchen and wlan and books and sofas andandand.... The staff is the best here, we felt at home, they help in everything, they even kook a breakfast omlette for you... What do you want more? Hostel zocalo is more a hotel, than a hostel. Keep it going, guys, We just lov this place

Hey everybody,

that Hostel is very good and we feel very secure.
The hosts and the staff are very helpful.
The rooms and bathrooms are clean and the breakfast was amazing.
It includes fresh fruits, cereals, coffee, buns and a jummy omelette.
And it´s directly in the city center, what else do you need!?

The value for money was great!
We can really recommend that hostel to everyone!

The hostel is located in an colonial building , and is huge . The rooms were big, and some with balcony looking out the main square in Merida. It was clean. The breakfast was huge and very good ! Better than most places who offer breakfest. We stayed there during the reperation of bathrooms, so there were some diffuculties regarding that, but I am sure, in the future the hostel are going to be awesome .

Room Tip: I was very happy for choosing the private room with the balcony , I would def. recommend that !

Right on the main plaza so very convenient for everything. Private room was nice and clean but sound travels very well and top of walls was just screening. Awesome breakfast, probably the best of the hostels we stayed at. Big common area but not really set up for meeting people/socializing. Nothing really bad to say, but we found another hostel in Merida we liked better.

Zocalo is a great hostel. It is located right on the Plaza Grande, and that's the center of Merida. Places to see, take buses to other places or around town, visit the mercado municipal for a great and cheap seafood! Moses, the owner, is a great friendly easy going guy. The place feels like home, and to prove this it comes with the BEST breakfast I have ever had at any hostel around the world! Few choices of fruit with yoghurt, omelets cooked to order, warm toasted buns, coffee, tea, and more. Zocalo is located in an old colonial building with lots of character, and I bet with lot's of history. Buildings and churches here were made by the Spanish from stones taken from the Mayan temples, which were right here where the Plaza Grande is now. The hostel is clean, and they are doing lots of renovations and improvements. They also run a place in Progreso, which is a close by quiet town on the beach. The hostel in Progreso is not finnished yet, but there are a few rooms and a low key dorm to stay. Great place to take it slow and easy. You can walk on the beach, drink beer on the street, eat freash fish! There is also kitchen available and WiFi. You should check it out for a couple days!
Thank you Merida and Hostal Zocalo! ... Stan

Room Tip: I stayed in a dorm. Male dorm is a little cramped, but beds are very comfortable.

I stayed at Zocalo for 3 nights at the start of January. Firstly the location of the hostel is great. It is right on the square, which is beautiful by the way. The hostel itself is also beautiful. The private rooms downstairs are basic, but the dorms were excellent. The owner is a cool guy and the atmosphere of the hostel is nice. The best part of this place is the free breakfast. Usually free breakfast is basic, toast and coffee or something. This free breakfast is excellent. You take your plate to the lady at the cooker, who quickly cooks up a cheese, tomato, onion and chili omlette (or whatever ingredients you would like), adds some refried beans, and then you help yourself to bread, lots of fruit and cereals. Nothing bad to say.

For the value, Hostal Zocalo is my hands down favorite place to stay in Mérida. I've stayed and visited numerous other hotels, hostels, and even rented rooms and apartments while living in Mérida during the two months or so that I was there. It's as good as it gets because you are right on the main square.

If you have a room with a view, it doesn't get any better. It's like living in Paris with a view of the Notre Dame. In Merida, the rooms with balconies have views of the Cathedral. I stayed in three different balcony rooms (private) as well as an interior private room, and a shared non-dormitory room.

IMO, Hostal Zocalo has superior value due to the unbeatable location, great staff, 24-hour guest access, friendly and accommodating environment, and the amazing included breakfast of fresh fruit, bread, omeletes, cereals, etc.

The laundry service is cheaper than the local services outside the hostel, but I would still wash my own delicates and dark colors in Mexico in general. There is a place you can hang your delicates and darks to dry in the lower courtyard.

The beds and rooms are clean and comfortable. Remember you are in a hostel in Mexico. So based on the context, as a pretty picky traveler, I greatly enjoyed the multiple stays at Hostal Zocalo and will make it my hostal of choice in Mérida. The owner has recently opened a hostel in the nearby beach town of Progresso, which I am looking forward to staying in, in the future. It's supposed to be beautiful according to a friend who just stayed there.

I opted for the private rooms in Hostal Zocalo, which are about double the cost of staying in the dorm (~$22-25 USD in Dec 2012 an Jan 2013). Their pricing is in pesos, so the cost will depend on what the exchange rate is and what you were able to exchange your dollars for.

I liked to go to the local market and buy cut flowers for the rooms I lived in. Along with the tall ceilings, old architecture, stone and tiled floors, and huge old double (french) doors, it's very old culture romantic, something you would not get from a slick upscale hotel or even a boutique hotel in most cases.

For American travelers: If you find the hot water, water pressure or lighting not to be up to American standards, that is not something that is unique to this hostel. Relative to what is typical in Mexico in private apartments, homes, other hotels and hostals, Hostal Zocalo actually had better than average water pressure, with roomy, clean and private shower stalls (for women, since I did not see the men's bathroom). And I personally never ran out of hot water.

Also, note that the same issue applies with internet. Internet speed and reliability in Mexico is not as fast or dependable in the US no matter where you are, unless you are actually in an internet facility with a physical ethernet connection. Hostal Zocalo is far above average. Do not compare it to your blazingly fast highspeed connection at home in the US (don't be silly).

If you go and you have a great time, be sure to tip the staff. They work hard to create an amazing place you can feel safe, comfortable and happy in.

Additionally, I made many new friends there. The vibe is wonderful, and I am normally someone who likes to be more private and keep to myself.

On the several occasions I stayed there in the last two months, there were people from Italy, Netherlands, South America, USA, Canada, China, Japan, Nigeria, France, Germany, Sweden, Mexico, etc. People were of all ages, most of whom were adults, but there I did see a few children and families too.

I love this hostel and give all the credit to the owner and his staff.
I will always have wonderful memories from Hostal Zocalo, and will be back for sure!

Much thanks to Moses for creating and running an amazing place, and to Jhoel, Patricia, Erene (sp?) and the rest of the staff for all they did to create an unforgettable experience for me during my stay there!

Room Tip: If you must have AC, book ahead and ask for the room with AC. I found that in Dec and Jan, the overh...
