“Great small, family owned hotel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 15, 2013

Great location, at the end of the Passseo and walking distance to city historic center. Hotel was clean and owner was on location every day that we were there. Rooms were large and bathrooms were clean with a good size overhead shower. Lovely seating areas outside of bedrooms with bottled water always available in the hall. Main floor of hotel has a lovely restaurant and one can dine inside or out on the lovely muraled semi open air area. Staff was extremely helpful and courteous at all times.

I'm in agreement with all the positive comments below. The hotel is beautifully designed, decorated, and maintained, a treat for the eyes as well as for the rest of the body. Even the bathrooms were special, with elegant (granite?) sinks and pebbled shower. We especially appreciated the little restaurant, which served excellent food (including excellent oj and coffee, we well as regional treats) both in the air-conditioned restaurant itself, and in the delightful hotel courtyard. Given the 100 degree heat of our trip, our leisurely breakfasts at Casa San Angel were one of the best parts of the journey! Wifi connection was a little spotty in the evenings, and the plunge pool isn't one where we wanted to linger, but given the beauty of our surroundings, the kindness and efficiency of the staff, and the surprising serenity of an urban hotel with easy access to the town center--hard to imagine a better choice.

Pros: engaged owner, eager to please staff, nice restaurant (ambience, food, service, beverages, THE COFFEE!, exquisite architecture, comfortable and spacious bed & room, pleasing lobby. Good value. Centrally located.

Cons: the lack of an elevator may be considered a disadvantage, but we soon became used to the 38 steps to our room.

We weould definitely stay here again on a return visit to Merida.

I can only second what the other reviewers have so ably said about Hotel Casa San Angel. It's charming, clean, esthetically pleasing, cool, beautifully located, quiet, whimsical, and very welcoming, with excellent staff who strike just the right note to make the guest feel comfortable without being overwhelmed. We parked our rental car right across the street (legally), checked in, and then returned it, making our arrival very easy. We had dinner at the Tala restaurant in the hotel and were pleased with the food, the charming dining room, the service, and the prices, which did not break the bank. If you like an authentic Mexican atmosphere, lots of greenery, a perfect location to engage in the cultural life of Merida, and lush comfort without ostentation, you will love this hotel.

Room Tip: Second floor rooms were great for able-bodied travelers but require too much stair climbing for some...

The hotel was comfortable, welcoming, and visual treat. Visually, it nicely balances the fresh and modern with the classic colonial. The lobby is a three story central courtyard with elegant furnishings, abundant plantings and vines, Rousseau-esque jungle murals on the walls. It feels good walking in the door (and it's about 10 degrees cooler too).

Speaking of being cool, our room was one of the double queens and had three windows, lots of natural light and importantly the AC worked great, though in the mornings and evenings we kept the windows open and lounged in the hammock in our room.

The hotel is located on a small side street right at the end of Paseo Montejo which means (a) it's relatively quiet even with the windows open (b) you are right at a lovely strolling boulevard with the classic mansions lining the street, and (c) you are an easy 10 minute walk to the zocalo and center of the historic district. We were very comfortable and felt safe walking back to the hotel after late dinners in the historic district.

On Saturday nights, the city hosts a "Noche Mexicana" right in front of the hotel; they close off the avenue, erect a stage, set up hundreds of chairs, line the streets with local artisan and food stands, and have a half dozen performances that start around 9pm and go until midnight. The performers when we were there included a few singers (doing classic Mexican tunes that many in the audience sung along to, traditional dancers, and marimba band that was really unique. It was enjoyable both as entertainment and a view of Mexican and Meridan custom. It is literally right in front of the hotel.

The restaurant was consistently good. The staff were friendly and very helpful.

Hotel Casa San Angel is a small, friendly, boutique-style hotel.
The location is great. It is literally nestled on a small street between one end of Paseo Montejo (Merida’s grand main avenue) and the start of the bustling downtown area.
Paseo Montejo is a great place to stroll and soak up the culture of Merida, many good restaurants and bars are within a comfortable walk. On Sunday’s half of the avenue is closed to traffic to allow families and get out on their bikes… bikes are also available for rent. Also on Sunday several blocks of downtown are also closed off to traffic and a host of stalls open up for Merida en Domingo which is well worth visiting.
The hotel rooms are very comfortable with a/c, nice bathrooms and cable tv. Staff is friendly and helpful. The open interior courtyard is a pleasant place to relax and the no children policy keeps it quiet. There is also a nice little pool area out back and a very decent restaurant café on site.
My wife loved the two onsite stores which offer a wide range of really wonderful Mexican craft items from all over the country.
We will definitely use this hotel again.
