Everyone says you have to try Los Almendros and they're right. It's a cozy restaurant that has an authentic feel and flavor not unlike the feeling you get with a visit to a Basque Restaurant in Bakersfield. You can tell some of the customers have been coming there for years (decades too). You'll find the traditional Yucatecan food without the modern flair of places like Chile Habanero. they even had deer on the menu one day.

Try La Tradición Restaurante (a couple of blocks North of the US Consulate) a really outstanding typical restaurant offering a wider variety of Yucatecan food choices.

The Queso Relleno here is one of the best anywhere in Merida! The filling has lots of spice and raisins, the cheese is cooked to a soft gooey perfection on the inside and firm but pliable on the outside. The white cream sauce that bathes the relleno is smooth, creamy and perfect.

The homemade tortillas are hot and delicious! Spread one with a touch of picante (the spicy hot green habañero sauce). Careful! It's got some kick but great flavor. Now load some cheese, meat relleno and white sauce onto the tortilla. Roll it up and take a bite. Heaven!

My other favorite here is the Chia Salad but not sure it is still on the menu. Chia is like spinach. Here they serve it like a Spinach Salad with hard boiled eggs, red onion and bacon bits. The also serve it with a fabulous dressing that I am not certain what it is but it has kind of a peanut flavor. If you go there - ask for it! Chia is also suppose to be an excellent health food.

Finally, this is one of the most fabulous ambiances in Merida. Located in the Fiesta Americana Hotel on the lobby level. Your sitting in a spectacular, soaring, Atrium that is domed by a fabulous stain glass ceiling. Your surrounded by wonderful architectural marble pillars, columns and floors! The place is a feast for the eyes as well as Yucatecan Food Gastronomy.

The office for Mexico International Real Estate use to be down stairs from this restaurant and we had the luxury of eating here frequently without ever leaving the building. I still go back frequently and it is a testament to Los Almendrous consistency - it's still great!

Note: there is also a location in Centro across from Parque Mejorada. It's OK but a complete different dining experience.

Recommended to us by our cab driver after we found La Tradicion had closed. Thought it was cool its mentioned in Rick Bayless's Authentic Mexican cookbook.

We had the appetizer sampler that included panuchos, chorizo, and cochinita pibil. Every single one of them was fantastic. None of it was plate filler, but could hold its own as an entree. We ordered the queso relleno. It was fantastic! The real deal.

Food was great, and so was the service. Very attentive staff. The atmosphere... well its in a hotel, and there was a goofy mural on the wall. Putting that aside, it was quite pretty.
