“NO ICE”
Reviewed September 26, 2010

First let me say that if you are a big ice person, do not stay here! no ice machines on the property! They tell you to get it from the pool bar, which we did, but they act like you are bugging them, give you 2 cubes and expect a tip. If I go back to this hotel i will take a travel cooler and buy my own ice. The hotel itself is in a great location. i would consider staying here again just for the very nice bathroom near the pool. We could pull the golf cart right up to the door and run to the bathroom which is a wonderful thing on isla! Room was nice, shower wonderful, beds very very hard! Staff: some very nice, some down right RUDE. Didnt like the little beach bar between ixchels pool and their beach. This bar has nothing to do with ixchel and there were local drunks there all day very loud, rude, we even got to see a bottle fight one day. Beach and water wonderul. Would stay again. Would not recommend with children.

My Fiance and I stayed at Ixchel for a week at the beginning of September. Since it was off season we got an amazing deal! Our room was the most basic that they offered but still comfortable and very clean. The front desk staff was great, and helped recommend everything from the best store to buy silver jewelry from to best place to buy a birthday cake! They also put us in contact with AGI Tours for a day trip to Chichen Itza, which was AMAZING! We loved our tour guide and the price for the private tour was well worth the experience. The location of the hotel is possibly the BEST on the island. The main street (Hildago) ends right at the center of the hotel so walking to dinner, or shopping was a breeze. And the north beach is just steps away, and is absolutely breathtaking. I plan on going back and would definitely stay at Ixchel again- but next time I want to upgrade to a room with a balcony.

Absolutely beautiful, spacious condos are tastefully furnished in a modern style. We stayed in Ixchel II room 310, an oceanfront 1-BR. We highly recommend the oceanfront upgrade--our wrap-around balcony was immediately over the best stretch of beach on the island and provided one side with sun and another with shade at all times of the day. Like many other condo/hotels, there was another bedroom next door (under construction) that we presume would be added to make this a 2-BR suite.
The kitchenette and refrigerator was handy for preparing food, making cocktails, morning coffee and tea, etc. A large jug of purified water was used for coffee, tea and ice cubes. Staff was friendly and helpful, although at times we found ourselves short of certain supplies like extra toilet paper. While our friends in a penthouse suite had paper towels, we bought our own at a tienda which the maids then folded into sculptures.
Let me dispel two myths--while the beds consist of a mattress on a concrete base without benefit of a box spring, we found the bed to be quite comfortable. Also, at this time of year anyway, there was no time during the day that the entire pool was in shade. And yes, we did use the pool--after a day in salt water it was nice to rinse off. We did not eat at ComoNo but did take advantage of their cocktail service on the beach and occasionally at the pool. Great mango daquiris!
A very small complaint--we found that leaving anything sweet out (a spoon used to stir coffee/tea, a plastic cup that had coke in it) would immedately attract swarms of very tiny ants. But other than that we saw no insects and they didn't really bother us.
We walked Playa Norte and also Playa Sol and we are convinced that the best stretch of beach anywhere on Isla is directly in front of Ixchel Beach Hotel. Playa Sol had a slightly fishy smell and Playa Norte over toward Avalon had a lot of bamboo piers built to prevent beach erosion. We highly recommend this hotel!

Overall the hotel was a great place to stay. the beach is the best location on the island and only steps from the hotel and pool. Their ComoNo bar/grill has the best calamari on the island. 2 Bdrm with living rm & kitchen were very adequate and quite spacious. Only negative would be the beds-too hard. they actually are mattresses on concrete slabs. i like firm but this really did a number on our backs. Staff was very friendly and accomodating. Beautiful view from balacony too.

This hotel was a treasure! We vacationed with our kids (9 and 17) and my parents, and we all loved this trip. The hotel was great, location perfect, the service at the hotel was great - as it is all over the island. This is a well kept secret! I can't think of any negative comments to make - it was perfect!

Recently returned from a weeklong stay on Isla Mujeres and decided to stay at Ixchel for a week. Turns out we made the right choice. We got the room for $99 a night, it was a first floor room with a garden view; the garden was a lawn with a few bushes. We knew we weren’t going to be spending a lot of time in the room looking at the view as we would rather be outside actually enjoying the perfect weather and gorgeous beaches so the view was less of an issue for us than it may be for others. The room was sparsely appointed but done in a tasteful way in a pleasing color palate. Everything was hard surfaces including the bed (but we slept very well). The room was very clean, well lit and perfect for a tropical island get away. The staff was always helpful, patient and professional. The front desk provided two wake up calls and reminders that housekeeping had not cleaned the room on a couple of occasions were we left the do not disturb sign out. On our last day there, the front desk let me use the computer to check in for our return flight. The location is perfect, walk through the pool area (75 yards) and the beach is right there! It's about a block from the main drag and the noise that goes along with that meaning everything is convenient but far enough away to not be a nuisance during sleepy time.

The only things we didn't care for were the hotel "restaurant" hour (they close by 8, stop serving food earlier) which was very small, but service was really good. During our last two days there, the construction noise got irritating. Lastly, the hotel does have a gym but there is only enough room to use the treadmill, the weight equipment is so closely spaced, there’s not any room to use it. My opinion is why spend more on a "better" hotel when this place covers the basics for lodging for an island retreat perfectly.

We recently stayed at Ixchel from 6/19 - 6/26 in building II penthouse 709. It was awesome. The view from the balcony was unbelievable and the condo was very comfortable. It has everything you could need and some nice extra touches from the owners (a small grill, a cooler if you want to take your own drinks down to the beach, some english dvd's, etc.) We rented through vrbo and the owners were very easy to work with. The king size bed has a mattress topper that was greatly appreciated, we slept great. And my 11 year old son slept on the futon in the living room with no complaints. The air conditioning worked wonderful, which is also greatly appreciated in the summer months. We had a minor issue with the refrigerator, but the hotel staff was quick and responsive to any issues we had. The balcony has a hot tub and is the perfect spot for watching beautiful Isla sunsets!!

The towels the hotel provides are nice, there's no need to bring beach towels from home. They work on a card system - when you check in you receive a card for each person in your party which can be exchanged for clean towels throughout the week. Loungers and umbrella's are available for free, we just gave a small tip to the waiter who set us up. The drink service on the beach from Comono's was nice to have.

In my opinion the hotel is perfectly located at the North end of Hildago. You are right on the beach and a very short walking distance to great food and the shops. Some of our personal favorite eating spots were Qubano's, Brisa's Grill, Jax, Cazuela M&J and Mango Cafe.

If, or should I say when we return to Isla - we hope to return to Ixchel PH 709.
