“Great premise, but the execution was lacking”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 25, 2009

The premise behind this hotel is charming. Unfortunately Casa Ixchel was not able to realize it completely. There were many appealing little details in the rooms, shells and incense for example. But they missed some of the basics. The steam room was stocked with essential oils, but did not work while we were there. The hot tub has beautiful tile, but was tepid. There are lovely sun beds, but the covers are threadbare. With a bit of care, this could be a very nice small hotel. The vision is there, the execution is lacking.

We started in Serenity. It was very small. There was only about three feet between the bed and the wall. The beautiful glass sink in the bathroom needed a new washer, so it squirted all over the bathroom. There was only a rather sheer curtain dividing the bathroom from the sleeping area. Several of the rooms were configured this way; peace, love and serenity. I am not sure about the others. So if this would bother you, inquire about it before you book. After voicing my concerns about the room to the gentleman at the desk, they let us change rooms with no additional charge. We ended up moving to Grace II for the remainder of the trip. This was a lovely room with two bedrooms, a huge tub, and a balcony facing the street. The showers in both rooms had personality. The hot water took awhile to come out, and the temperature would change radically and unexpectedly.

All in all, this was not the best value. There were almost $100 in taxes and fees attached to the room rate. The booking system did not tell you this until it confirmed the reservation. I did not get an email confirmation of the reservation. I had to email and call to get a response. It actually would have been cheaper to remain at the 5 star hotel that we started at in Cancun.

I would not recommend this hotel to a friend. This saddens me because I was so excited to find quaint yogi friendly hotel on Isla Mujeres.

My husband and I stayed at Casa Ixchel for 6 nights, our first time on the island. We did enjoy our stay and appreciated a lot of qualities about this hotel:

-our room, although not super spacious, was very comfortable and tastefully decorated. The bathroom was nice (no issues at all with hot water) and the kitchenette was an added bonus and well-equipped.
-the town is only about a 20 minute walk, or a $3, 5-minute cab ride. Very easy to get back and forth if you enjoy staying a little further away from the hub.
-they have made an effort to make it a calm and welcoming place to stay, and in that I think they have succeeded.

On the other hand, by the end of our stay we weren't sure we got the best value for our money here. It is not at all a bad place to stay, as mentioned above, but for the price there is so much more they could have done to make the stay a little more memorable, or even just a bit more convenient for guests. These were some of the things we felt were lacking:
-the staff didn't really go out of their way to tell us much about the hotel or about the island for that matter. There is so much to learn about things to see and do in Isla- why not do up a little info sheet or binder to leave in each room?
-the hotel did provide drinking water outside near reception, but there was no drinking water in our kitchenette, even though they had a little stand on the counter where they could have had some waiting when we got there.
-the restaurant is only open for dinner. It's a mystery why they wouldn't serve breakfast or lunch, with all the guests staying just below at the hotel. We ended up making our own breakfast in our room, but always went into town for a good coffee, which wasn't always convenient.
-they have a great little terrace to watch the surf come in and relax on, but only one chaise lounge for the entire hotel (the rest of the seating spots are tanning beds, with no back support if you like to sit and read or watch the waves)
-despite what they say on the website or in person, you cannot call this a "beach" site. The water is WAY too rough here, and there isn't actually any sand, it's just heaps of coral and rock (and an abundance of conch shells!). If you really want to be right on the beach, stay in town near Playa Norte.
-there is indeed a nice pool, but this side of the island is very windy and cool (at least in February) and the pool was not super heated. It would have to get a whole lot hotter (maybe in the summer months) to actually want to go swimming here.

I know these are all little things, but they add up. There are a lot of places to stay on Isla, and I'm not sure if we came back here if we would stay at Ixchel again. Not because it was bad, but because it was simply average.

Stayed for a long weekend. Hotel stay was wonderful. Quite and the hotel staff was responsive, friendly and helpful. Rooms were clean and functional. The weater was a little on the cool side so we couldn't go into the water but the island was fun and relaxing. The hotel has a new restaurant. The food is excellent and well run. All in all an outstanding trip.

We stayed one night on the Island. Arrived at the hotel after 5:00 pm and there was no staff. Fortunately, the American manager of the new restaurant adjoining the hotel was lovely, and showed us to our room. It was so disappointing. The website photos are beautiful but our room "Karma" was small and not a "suite", as advertised. I was expecting so much more based on the wonderful feel of the web photos. The next morning the cleaning staff (or someone) was noisy and our room was next to the hotel entrance where we could hear the door banging closed and the noisy floor grates every time someone went by. This could be improved upon! We never did get to see any hotel managerial staff as we left before 9:00 am and they weren't in yet. There was no breakfast at the hotel so we needed to get going. The hotel is quite a distance from the Ferry, beach, and main parts of town. That meant we needed to drag our bags around with us if we didn't want to take another taxi back to the hotel to get our bags at the end of the day. On the up side - the new restaurant was lovely and we enjoyed eating there upon our arrival. The bar was beautiful and the service in the restaurant was superb.

My boyfriend and I went to travel the Mayan Caribbean in "07 and stopped at Isla Mujeres for about three days. We arrived late and they waited for us to arrive well into the evening. The location is right on the beach with a wonderful view. There was a bit of an issue with the keys but after that all was well. The room was very comfortable and decently decorated with a good AC system. Its a great mid point between one end of the island and the other especially if you are renting a golf cart. We would return if we were in the area.

Loved this place! Very quiet and tranquil. True mexico feel. The rooms were cozy, clean, and peaceful. The pool was beautiful and private, right on the ocean. The staff was very accomadating and eager to please:) Loved the town and fishing pier areas. Good adventures and memories.

It is a beautiful small hotel facing the ocean - that part was wonderful. The staff was also great.

The problems were:
1 - when I booked the hotel, I think they were still serving breakfast there, because I remember reading about how you can eat on the patio. In our room there was even a breakfast menu. But they do not serve breakfast - so you have to go into the town to eat. I was hoping to be able to eat at the hotel and end up spending the entire day hanging out by the ocean (just relax away from the crowds) - but that plan was crushed right there and then.
2 - construction was horrible. I can't believe they start before 7am! The hotel staff told us it may get loud around 10am. Ha, ha!
3 - No hot water. First night - we had no hot water in our shower/tub. We ended up having to wash our hair in the kitchen sink. We complained to the staff the next morning (no staff is around after 5pm) - and the next day we had sporadic luke warm water, but that was it. Thank goodness it was warm enough for a luke warm shower.

Would not recommend this hotel until they fix their problems. It's a shame - such a beautiful property with great people.
