Owner description: Richart Sowa built Joysxee, the Floating Bottle Island by himself, with over 150,000 plastic bottles. Shown on MTV Extreme Cribs and Ripley's Believe It or Not, the island that floats on bottles is an ecological masterpiece. Everything on the island was built with recycled materials from the three story house, to the out door bar. Come tour Joysxee and meet the incredible Richie, a real life Robinson Crusoe. An experience you can only find on Isla Mujeres.

We had the pleasure of visiting Richard's first island that he built back in 2002-3 down near Akumal but sadly it was destroyed by Hurricane Wilma I believe... But Richard built a new one, this time on Isla Mujeres! We got to see this baby from it's inception, growing from a tiny scrap of coke bottles to the massive structure featured on tv today! Just make sure that if you find Richard and his beatiful creation, bring him a donation to continue his project or something "green" he can use for the island... Truly Amazing!

Hands down, one of the most interesting guys on the island. If there were more people like him, the world would be a better place. This is recycling at it's finest. Show your support by taking a tour of his magical floating home, which is kept afloat by plastic bottles. Love you Richart, and I'll see you in January, and soon to be moving there on a more permanent basis!
All the best,
Donna Rego

Any visit to Isla Mujeres is not complete without a visit to Rishi's bottle island. It is a real treat to see with this man has done, and to chat with him about how he accomplished this feat. It is really something to be seen to be understood.

I saw this place on the Travel Channel and thought it was a little weird ... after I saw it sitting there, I thought it was amazing, we just stumbled onto the place .... unfortunately, we didn't have a chance to meet the guy who built it ...

Next time I'm in Isla I will definitely look him up ... I'm sure he has a lot of worthwhile things to say

richard built his self sustaining island using plastic bottles. trash, etc. He was the nicest person and welcomed us to his home. The island has solar power running water, and almost everything is edible. Richart views on life/spiritualism were a breath of fresh air in our society. He served us tea and home made cake as we explored his beautiful home.

Thank you Richart for opening up your home to us we will never forget it.
