Owner description: Richart Sowa built Joysxee, the Floating Bottle Island by himself, with over 150,000 plastic bottles. Shown on MTV Extreme Cribs and Ripley's Believe It or Not, the island that floats on bottles is an ecological masterpiece. Everything on the island was built with recycled materials from the three story house, to the out door bar. Come tour Joysxee and meet the incredible Richie, a real life Robinson Crusoe. An experience you can only find on Isla Mujeres.

It was worth seeing no charge - very unusual and the island can be moved at any time he choose-kinda neat. Lalo G.

Talking to the person who built it is amazing. He tells how he built it from water bottles that cause problems with our environment. It has two stories. You have to see it to believe it.

We went out of our way to find this spot but I wouldn't bother. Check it out on you tube and save your time while on Isla. The video makes it look much bigger than it is and it appears to be getting run down.

Hi. Very sorry that you feel that way about Richart Siwo's Island. Did you get a chance to go onto the island and visit Richart himself? You do know that he lives on the island and that he built it with his own hands, and continues to build upon it each day? To meet with him and get an understanding of what he has built and his motivations behind this lifestyle are truly amazing.

Again, we are very sorry that you did not find anything special about Richart or his home. It has taken him almost ten years to rebuild the island after a hurricane destroyed the first one. Maybe you will visit again in the future.

All the best,

James

This place might have been nice once but when we checked it out, it looked like it was an abandoned pile of garbage. My friend walked out on the dock to get a closer look and it almost collapsed under him. I think the other reviewer that figured a better place for the bottles was a recycle center was right. Mexico needs a good recycling program. It is sad to see all the plastic that is everywhere that could all be cleaned up. It is ashame to have such a mess in paradise.

I am very sorry you feel this way about Richart's home and island. Did you get a chance to walk on the island and meet Richart for yourself? If not, we hope you will next time you are on Isla Mujeres. He built it entirely with his own hands and lives on it year round.

All the best,

James

This place is AMAZING. I've heard a lot about it, but when I actually went there it was better than I imagined. Richart Sowa, the island's owner/builder, is a brilliant man. The island's atmosphere is warm, welcoming and peaceful. If you are planning a trip to Mexico, I recommend taking the time to check it out. I can't wait to go back.
