“Wonderful, Clean, Cheap Hotel”
Reviewed February 15, 2011

This was our second trip to Isla Mujeres. We went last year around the same time, but last year we had no idea what the layout of the island was so we picked beach front hotels. After finding out how small the central/north area was this year we decided to save a little money and stay slightly inland. The money we saved afforded us a few extra days on the island which was great!

We originally were going to attempt to hit the island with no reservations and shop around a little, but we panicked in the end and booked Hotel Marcianito. That said coming to the island without reservations is probably a pretty safe thing to do, unless you are going during a major holiday. There are several small hotels that you won't find online and can't reserve ahead of time.

But anyway, for roughly 450 pesos per night (or about $37) the hotel was perfect for us. We received a third story room that overlooked the main pedestrian street on the island. From our balcony we could sit at night and watch the parade of people below and sip our drinks.

The room itself was roughly 14' x 14' and very clean. It came with a tv (which we hardly used), a refrigerator, a full bed, and a safe. In my opinion it was very comparable to Bahia Cha Chi and Ixchel, the two hotels we stayed at the year before. The main differences being, the location, the size of the hotel and the room and some of the unnecessary amenities: a pool, a bar, a flat screen tv. Others may enjoy those amenities, but we didn't go to the island to sit in our room and watch tv or sit by the pool, we could do those things at home. And as far as location, the island is tiny, roughly 5 miles long and 2 miles wide. Our walk to Playa Norte was only three or four blocks.

The room did not have AC, but we really didn't need it. Being on the third floor we had nice breezes and the ceiling fan in the room was very strong. With those two elements combined it never got too hot. Actually there were a few times when it was too cold.

Some reviewers complained about the noise at night and in the morning, but we were never bothered. Being on the third floor and having the steady hum of the ceiling fan we slept well every night and were well rested for another lazy day on the beach or a nice hike to the south end of the island.

Overall Hotel Marcianito is a great place to stay if you're merely looking for a nice, clean room with a few basic amenities.

Back from our second stay here. This place is really unbeatable for the price. I read the review about bed bugs before we stayed there this time, which worried me a bit. Once there I checked the mattresses and bedding. I thought eveything looked clean and to be in good shape. It can be loud as it is in the centro, but this time it wasn't bad. I would recommend this hotel to anyone who doesn't need much from the staff (no english), doesn't mind being a couple blcoks off the beach in the center and likes a good deal ($40/night). The one thing that would be nice would be a fridge in the room.

This is an excellent hotel for the budget conscience traveler. We paid ~$26/night for a small but adequate room, including satelite TV (with several American channels), and a private bathroom. The hotel and room was always clean and smelled fresh. Staff was very professional and kind...will need a little spanish to communicate. Hotel is centrally located. It is in the middle of the shopping and dining district and just a 5 minute walk to the North Beach. The only problem we had with our stay was the middle-of-the-night wake up calls by a nearby rooster. Would recommend brining earplugs.

We stayed December 2008 - January 2009

Please note - the overall rating is VERY GOOD with earplugs!

If the night-time (or more accurately, early-morning) music blaring through town wasn't so invasive, this hotel would be one of the best, non-waterfront, budget choices in town.

The hotel and staff are top notch. Our rooms were clean and well maintained, the location convenient. Purified drinking water is available at the office. The breezes on the 3rd floor kept us all cool and not needing A/C. Our rooms (we rented 3 for our extended family) all had a safe for valuables, a colour TV, and comfortable beds. The only thing missing was a mini fridge. The staff was friendly and helpful and some English is spoken.

Maybe the island council should consider the late-night noise issue. We've been going to Isla for 8 years and the noise just gets worse each year. I'd hate it to become a miniature Cancun!

Thanks to all at Hotel Maricanito!

We booked a room in the Hotel Marcianito for early January 2009 after reading all of the positive rooms on trip advisor. The room was relatively clean. The hotel is well located if you want to be "downtown" or where the nightlife/shopping is, but there are lots of hotels that are closer to the beach. The beach is only a few minutes' walk away, though, but there are plenty of other options if you'd rather stay on the beach, or closer to the beach. I also liked how there was a TV in the room. And, it is definitely quite cheap!

However, the negatives forced us to eventually have to change hotels. First of all, our bed had bedbugs which is a common problem throughout Mexico but I really have trouble sleeping when I can feel bedbugs crawling all over me. Worse than the bedbugs, however was the NOISE. I can't stress enough, this is probably the noisiest place I have ever slept which is weird because Isla is a very small island. You wouldn't think that there could be that much noise. People in the streets shouting, roosters, scooters, children yelling, the maid service outside - you name it. We got such terrible sleep after three days we had to give up ( we were supposed to be there for a week) and find somewhere else to stay. AND we had ear plugs with us - nothing worked! It was unbelievable. Also, our room was pretty hot. It had a cieling fan but it was moving so slowly as to not be effective - there is no A/C there. And that was in January.

So in sum, for one or two nights, it is probably ok, but if you enjoy your rest and sleep and/or heat and bedbugs bother you, you'd better look elsewhere.

Hotel Marcianito is in a great location, just steps from the main pedestrian walkway in town in Isla Mujeres and close to shops, restaurants, ferry, beach, etc. The hotel and the rooms are very clean. I was in a single room for 300 pesos a night (it would probably have been big enough for 2 people) closer to the back of the hotel, so not much of a view but still a nice ocean breeze when the windows were open. The room had a ceiling fan and cable TV, and a small, clean bathroom with a stand-up shower. They have double rooms closer to the front of the hotel for 350 pesos, I believe. Room 14 is a nice room for a double; you have a little veranda right outside where you can probably see the sea on both sides of the island.

There is some street noise, and you can hear live music from the place on the corner that seems to play every afternoon through early evening. And there's a confused rooster that crows around 3am sometimes. Earplugs would be a good idea if that bothers you. Also, some of the rooms look over the back courtyard shared by the neighboring shops, so there's usually some noise from people going about their daily business, kids playing, etc.

There's a nice family that lives on the first floor and runs the place. Via email I was in touch with a Senor Martinez who made the reservation for me and was very efficient and helpful. I sent $ via Western Union for the first night. The woman who takes care of business on the property is Nelly, I believe, and was also very helpful.

  • Liked — Location and price
  • Disliked — No hammocks and 3am rooster
