This was our second trip to Isla Mujeres. We went last year around the same time, but last year we had no idea what the layout of the island was so we picked beach front hotels. After finding out how small the central/north area was this year we decided to save a little money and stay slightly inland. The money we saved afforded us a few extra days on the island which was great!
We originally were going to attempt to hit the island with no reservations and shop around a little, but we panicked in the end and booked Hotel Marcianito. That said coming to the island without reservations is probably a pretty safe thing to do, unless you are going during a major holiday. There are several small hotels that you won't find online and can't reserve ahead of time.
But anyway, for roughly 450 pesos per night (or about $37) the hotel was perfect for us. We received a third story room that overlooked the main pedestrian street on the island. From our balcony we could sit at night and watch the parade of people below and sip our drinks.
The room itself was roughly 14' x 14' and very clean. It came with a tv (which we hardly used), a refrigerator, a full bed, and a safe. In my opinion it was very comparable to Bahia Cha Chi and Ixchel, the two hotels we stayed at the year before. The main differences being, the location, the size of the hotel and the room and some of the unnecessary amenities: a pool, a bar, a flat screen tv. Others may enjoy those amenities, but we didn't go to the island to sit in our room and watch tv or sit by the pool, we could do those things at home. And as far as location, the island is tiny, roughly 5 miles long and 2 miles wide. Our walk to Playa Norte was only three or four blocks.
The room did not have AC, but we really didn't need it. Being on the third floor we had nice breezes and the ceiling fan in the room was very strong. With those two elements combined it never got too hot. Actually there were a few times when it was too cold.
Some reviewers complained about the noise at night and in the morning, but we were never bothered. Being on the third floor and having the steady hum of the ceiling fan we slept well every night and were well rested for another lazy day on the beach or a nice hike to the south end of the island.
Overall Hotel Marcianito is a great place to stay if you're merely looking for a nice, clean room with a few basic amenities.
