Every time I plan a trip to Isla Mujeres, I look at all the accommodation options, and end up at Punta Piedra again (and will be staying there for my 5th time this winter). For a woman traveling solo, it is perfect. The owner, Amy, is a very friendly woman originally from the U.S. She and her family live just a couple doors down, and it's nice having someone close by who, if I got sick or something happened, I wouldn't have to rely on communicating with in my horrible tourist’s Spanish. Beyond that, the location is perfect - just far enough out of town to be quiet and relaxing, but close enough that you don't feel stranded. It’s about a 20 minute walk to town, or you can get one of the taxis that drive by every few minutes. It is right on the beach on the Caribbean side so you get the sound of crashing waves and the stiff breezes that are partial to that side of the island. There is a private pool for the 4 apartments. Each apartment has its own hammock next to the pool, overlooking the ocean. The apartments themselves are comfy and well equipped - not 4 star luxury, but perfect for a "beach bum" vacation. And the price can’t be beat! There are a couple other places on the island in this price range, but not a single one has all of the amenities that Punta Piedra does. Speaking of price, it will probably be close to your last day before Amy comes around to collect the remainder of what you owe (after your deposit). Don’t fret! It’s just the laid back way things are done on the island. The only negatives I can think of are: 1. The bed isn't W Hotel comfy, but it beats the rock-hard matresses you find in most of the Yucatan, and 2) the pool can be pretty chilly throughout most of the year.
