Our first and only visit was for a quick supper of tacos. We found them to be good, but nothing special. Maybe the main entrees are better.

My fiancé and I always seek out local flavors when we travel, and Monchi's was just what we were looking for on this get-away-from-it-all trip. The owner greeted us with a smile as he opened our taxi door when we arrived at his small, yet comfy restaurant. There was a unique selection of Mexican Carribean dishes to choose from, and I went with the grilled pineapple, which deserves some explanation. The chef, who has some professional culinary training (but claims he learned everything he needed to know about cooking from his mother), whacks a pineapple in half with a machete and cuts out most of the fruit from inside. He then mixes that fruit with rice, vegetable, shrimp (or filet if you prefer), and their very flavorful blend of spices on the grill. Meanwhile, the mostly emptied pineapple half sits hollow-side down on the grill as well, getting cooked and absorbing the flavors. When he's done, he fills the pineapple with the rice, shrimp, etc. and dinner was served. My fiancé had the surf and turf, which had two skewers of extrememly well seasoned filet and tiger shrimp with vegetables on a bed of rice. We were so pleased with our meal that we came back a few nights later to order the same dishes! We highly recommend Monchi's.

But had the most fantastic margarita . . . pineapple and cilantro! Not for everyone's taste, certainly, but it was huge and strong and very tasty! Others with me had more traditional beverages, but I will remember Monchi's for this original drink!

At the recommendation of the home owners we rented from, we ate at Monchis. A few of these guys worked at the now defunct Sergio's. Our server came over and immediately told us before we even ordered that if we didn't like the food, he would not charge us for it. We ordered the stuffed grouper. I had seen mixed reviews of this dish, but decided to try it. It was one of the best we ate the entire time. The shrimp were large and the entire experience was great from the food to the staff. Another must for us.

Two of us went here on a recent week to Isla. We tried a variety of restaurants based on recommendations on this site and Map Chick. I kept feeling something was missing, and I found it at Monchi's! When we arrived we were given our choice of tables; we sat on the lawn outside. The menu was all Spanish, although the two waiters were both very fluent in English and were happy to offer any translation or explanation needed. That being said, we both wisely ordered from the specials of the night. We had a half pineapple filled with a shrimp/rice/veggie stir fry dish with some nice heat to it. The other dish was a fish cooked in foil with an exquisite white sauce with sides of rice and veggies. We drank cerveza, but the frozen drinks others had looked fabulous. There were other specials as well.
Monchi's is located on the caribe side of Isla in a nice neighborhood mid island with street parking for those who came in golf carts. It was also easy to get a taxi. Prices were very reasonable, especially for the quality of the food. We loved it!
