“Best vacation ever!”
Reviewed April 2, 2014

We just got back from Isla about 3 weeks ago. Best vacation ever! We loved staying at the Mia Reef, it has a perfect setting, on it's own little island. the service was great and the location was fantastic! It is tucked away back in its own little paradise. Just a short walk to all the fun downtown, and great views all around. The room was standard, but who's in their room on a vacation, anyways!? I loved the beach bar, it was our meeting place for everyone!

I stayed here last week. I was concerned because of the mixed reviews. It was great. Did the all-inclusive option. The beach surrounding the hotel is amazing! The food at the only opened restaurant was ok. Not a great variety but edible. The pool is small but clean and very pretty. They do not have a lot of activities available. No real shows at night. We had a small room with a queen size bed. Room was clean and bed comfortable. Overall it was a nice place. There is a lot of room for improvement but they are working on things now. The only negative thing I would really say is the staff overall is not very friendly or outgoing. Oh and watch your towel closely. We had ours taken while we were there.......

We have a time-share here at the MIA although the time-share was with Avalon rather than MIA we can still use it. Not sure of all the legal ramifications there will be, but we still reserved a week for next year while there. A lot of work was being done and the whole 2 weeks we were there, there was hammering and sawing and pounding going on. New items were added while old items were being replaced. Things like the tiki huts at the beach, pathways, and roofs. lots of repair work was taking place. That was on the outside. Much more work was needed for the inside, but we were comfortable. When a problem came up, they did get it taken care of. We are looking forward to seeing this resort in a few years when most of the renovations may be finished. This property has not be kept up for several years so it will take several years to get it in shape like it should be. The views of the ocean are the best here, and it was so nice to be remembered by some of the staff that was kept on after the sale of this property. We love staying out on the island and would not consider staying in Cancun ever again. The island is laid back and quite. However, the last week of our visit was during spring break. yep, the spring breakers found our resort. However, the resort did not let them get away with too much and even cut off one spring breaker who was making a jerk of himself, from any more alcohol.

Room Tip: we were able to choose not to go all-inclusive and so we ate mostly outside of the resort. One Break...

My husband and son are currently staying here. The hotel has a new owner who is putting a lot of money into significantly upgrading the place. The renovation is being handled in such a manner that we really don't notice. We are benefitting from a beautiful new bar including new pool bar and new pool. We have been watching the restaurant and another area under construction. The bar area is huge and currently doubling as restaurant so no issue for us. The big plus about this place is the location. We swim and snorkel in beautiful clear calm water everyday. (Snorkel boats pull up to snorkel in same waters). When we venture out in town we always breath a sigh of relief when we cross the bridge to our peaceful paradise. Will write more but wanted to counter the review below from march 19.

The MIA Reef Isla Mujeres Hotel truly delivered for the We Move Forward 2014 conference. The conference room was ideal, the meals and wait staff excellent, and location absolutely perfect. The MIA Reef Isla Mujeres has and is undergoing significant renovations - all improvements from the previous Avalon. The managers at the hotel worked closely with the conference organizers to create a wonderful 3 days for the 80 women who attended We Move Forward. Well done MIA Reef Isla Mujeres. We will look forward to hosting the WMF conference at the MIA Reef again in 2015!

We did not stay here - thank God! - but had considered before booking the privilege aluxes. While on the island we walked over to the Avalon to check out - it is in MAJOR disrepair - MAJOR! The location and water is stunning but the resort itself is soooo worn down. In its day I'm sure it was incredible and we could see that they are restoring but this is going to take some major time and I wish them success as it is a very unique and beautiful location. HOWEVER, stay away until it's done and that looks like its going to be a while. With all the disrepair and continual noise of sledgehammering, etc it's amazing to me that it's not closed until finished. We travel 3 or 4 times a year and don't mind basic accommodations (when that's all we have paid for), but I seriously cannot understand some of these "glowing" reviews. To each their own I guess......but do your research

Had to write this review based on reading others. We stayed at resort in Feb 2014. We did NOT know it would be under renovation....but this was never a problem. We paid 230. USD for both of us with all inclusive. We loved the food but it was in no way gourmet or US based! We ate many meals in town, which were amazing! But resort breakfast Huevos rancheros , fresh fruit, eggs anyway, late afternoon chicken tacos on soft corn tortillas, fresh guacamole, ceviche, and night time, anything they cooked on flat top, fresh made soup, salad, fruits. Many things we did not care for but many we did....and it was pretty obvious that hot dogs were used in breakfast and dinner items...we just stirred clear and stuck with Mexican type dishes! Between huge breakfasts before we started out our days and the pool drinks and the amazing view from our Studio1024 more then worth the value!!!! Our friends were staying at 500+ a night w breakfast! They were not near town ,flat view of Cancun hotels, very expensive restaurant. Beautiful but no where near the view and cool beach we had!!! DO Not stay in high rise yet, everyone complained about the rooms except suites!! The Studios are two story buildings, pretty beat up but Clean!! Bed was HARD ask for pad. And the Oceanside view with the waves crashing right under the room was amazing!! We found the English speaking TV stations and loved all the American movies with that I believe we're never shown in US!! A point on the staff, we found many English speaking staff, restaurant manager was very customer oriented, upbeat and helping staff constantly! All staff was friendly and helpful! I asked lots of other guests about the construction and No One complained!!! All construction was done by hand( no big machinery any where) more interesting then annoying !! They do need more beach amenities !!
I did not want to leave and will return. Ps the last four nights of our trip were spent in 55ft sport fishing boat Contango! GO Fishing there, it was great. We live in Fl keys and were stilled amazed by all the fish!
