Last week, my husband and I went for our second stay at Avalon Reef. Once again, or stay was top notch. The staff is very friendly and they have a wonderful dive shop on premises. The grounds are kept very nice and our room was nice, with a nice view. The only thing missing was a refrigerator. We will be visiting again soon.

Recently had the pleasure of staying at the Avalon for a second time. This time we stayed in one of the tower rooms , and I was really amazed by them{ since reading all the poor reviews before}. I found them to be very clean, plenty of room for 3 adults . great views of the open ocean out of the large window and an amazing view of other side and town when you walk out of your door. They staff was always friendly and wanting to tend to our needs all the way down to the maid service. You can not beat the grounds, views , and short walk into town . We will use them again on our next trip to the island and also there is amazing dive shop on site with a great staff to make your stay even better. Way to go Avalon management and staff , and thanks for our wonderful stay. Until next time.....

Room Tip: Get a room on the higher floors for the best views or get a studio room for the best stay.

We just returned from one week at the Avalon. The studio low-rise unit with balcony was perfect with a stunning view of the island and wonderful sunsets. We commend the staff for constantly keeping up the grounds, cleaning and sweeping. For an older hotel, it was perfectly fine. We asked our bell boy for foam toppers immediately and that improved the hard bed. Even though the gym is small, the gym shower facility was excellent! And we used it as our hospitality suite instead of paying for late check-out. We were shocked with the boat loads of people dropped off at our beach, I guess for “snorkeling” even though all the plant life is dead, and the fish show up because they know there is free food on its way. We were disappointed in the King’s bath. Again, all the plant life is dead...I swear the star fish we saw there was struggling to get out! We booked a snorkel trip to the underwater museum, but had to cancel due to strong winds and undercurrents. Most folks come to the island as a day trip from Cancun so consequently on a nice day, the public beaches get very busy which is fun to watch from the luxury of the Avalon’s private beach. It was also fun to watch all the power boats anchored off our beach. All in all, it’s still a great place to visit. We also enjoyed walking downtown every evening for a vast variety of dinner choices. We had the BEST whole grilled snapper and nachos downtown. Sushi restaurant was disappointing. We like exploring new things so personally, we will not return, but we do recommend the Avalon for the budget traveler and private beach.
Cons: Snorkeling off our hotel beach was disappointing; can get very windy
Pros: water is clear and shallow so perfect for kids and/or leisure walks and play

Room Tip: Book a suite not the tower; to escape the north beach winds, rent chairs and an umbrella and spend a day on the west beach for fun people watching; ask for a foam bed topper immediately upon arrival; if you don’t like crowds avoid the Easter holiday; due to the north beach location it can get windy so take a light jacket for evenings; take picture I.D. to rent a golf cart.

The Avalon Reef at Isla Mujeres was an adequate hotel, but needed upgrades. We stayed there for 3 days. However, we did not stay there for the room, but for the surroundings and location. The positives: right on the white sand beach, ocean on both sides, great swimming, snorkeling, lots of selection of restaurants nearby. We had the American breakfast plan, (the food was good) and on the first day there, because we checked in early, we opted for breakfast. One of the staff there gave us a bill afterwards. A bit frustrating, because we already had our bracelets on, and we were 'checked in', just waiting for our room We had to explain at the desk that we were not having breakfast on our last morning there, as we had to catch the ferry at 5:30 am. So we were choosing to have breakfast on Sat, Sun, and Mon - but not on the Tues. that we were leaving. The negatives: room was small, toilet "ran" if you didn't jiggle the handle after flushing, air conditioner noisy, no towel rack by the sink, not given washcloths, old hair dryer, and a very hard bed. Would we go back? Yes, but only if there were some upgrades or if we were given a better room (ie a villa).

Room Tip: get a villa on the other side of the hotel if possible

We stayed at the Avalon for the second time. Honestly, the first time I forgot how the hotel was because the surroundings and atmosphere were so wonderful. This hotel is very basic as far as the rooms go. My husband and I don't search out 5 star hotels, especially in beautiful places, because we aren't in them all that much. This would be the perfect place to sleep at night except the bed was rock hard. I woke up stiff and sore. Their continental breakfast is fantastic with so many options. I wish the bed wasn't so hard because the location and everything else is great for the price. Unfortunately, I will probably look elsewhere for accommodations next time we go to Isla Mujeres.

Room Tip: We stayed in the tower, maybe the villas are more comfortable.
