This hotel is situated in paradise:-)
We ate well at the small hotel restaurant and took the leftovers with us to the laguna and fed the millions of fish there. We rented an electric car and got to see the whole island.
The ferry from Cancun was great and an experience in itself. Seeing dolphins and seabirds enroute :-)
The rooms are nothing much but you spend very little time there :-)

Room Tip: Get a room with a jacuzzi if possible !!! We could not get one because it was fully booked but next...

We stayed here with a groupon deal, which made it completely worth it. The villas has a great view, ac worked, and the room was clean and up to par. The best part of the hotel is the beach right in front, amazing. The staff is very friendly.

Room Tip: Stay in the villas

I was very wary of staying here after reading the reviews. The only reason we did was because I got suckered in by a Groupon that was on offer. I'll keep this short and sweet...the hotel is in dire need of maintenance. You can see the rebar sticking out where chunks of the facade have fallen off. The beds were similar to what I imagine prisoners sleep on, very hard and very uncomfortable. No matter how many times I told myself that "it is good for my back" the fact remains that they are terrible and I would wake up sore. The A/C, when it worked, only cooled in a direct line. It was the wierdest thing; the rest of the room would be hot and humid (we were there in June 2012) but if you were sitting directly in front of the unit you would be fine. Take two steps to the right and you were --. Speaking of sitting, we were in a villa and had a king bed and one lousy chair. There was no sitting area or couch on which to relax and talk about our day. Call me a stickler but I prefer to have somewhere to sit and chat other than the edge of the bed, especially over a week-long stay.

The staff were very accommodating and helpful in resolving our issues, like when the A/C stopped working completely and when our key just stopped working too.

I can't say anything about the facilities at the hotel as we ate in town every day and were doing things off-property. This was our third year to visit Isla Mujeres and we are beginning to know our way around (we spend most of our beach time at Castillo de Garrafon, NOT the Garrafon park, and love it there). We followed the hollyeats site for restaurant suggestions and weren't let down (google hollyeats and find the link to Isla Mujeres).

This is the most unique and perfect property on the island. It is on its own island surrounded by calm tropical fish-filled pools complete with its own reef called the kings pool! Don't forget your snorkel you will want to spend hours exploring the crystal clear waters of this hotel. Stay in the villas/bungalows. The main building is not a good place to be. The studio villa had its own balcony and kitchen area overlooking ocean. I have stayed here twice and loved it both times. Last trip was in 2010.

Room Tip: Don't stay in main building you will be disappointed...

The Avalon Reef is in a wonderful location. We were in a villa overlooking crashing waves near the King's Bath. Food/drink in the restaurant/bars overpriced and not that good, but within ten minute walk of a variety of local restaurants. Yes, needs some updating but met our needs just fine.

This was our second visit to Isla and by far the best experience. Avalon was a grade C+ hotel, however. The room was adequate - like a Holiday Inn Express adequate - but clean and functional. Everything but the patio light seemed to work. The hotel just needs deferred maintenance. When you see exposed rebar on the side of a hotel facing the Caribbean, then that's telling.

The food is no reason to come here. But, the lagoon and the location is winner. The pool needs repair (some loose tiles) but otherwise refreshing.

Service, adequate. Everyone says "hola" but that's about it. Lunch of Quesadillas and shrimp tacos were good and lunch services was actually good most of the time. Our expectations were fairly low, so takes that for what's it's worth.

At the end of the day, Isla Mujeres is a killer vacation, if you just relax and don't let vacation expectations stress you out. It's MEXICO. Watch where you step, streets and sidewalks are crooked and there is always a pothole to watch for. It's EXICO...not Honolulu, so just relax.

Overall, the hotel met our expectations...hard beds are a way of life here...and the lagoon, amazing.

The dive shop here, Mandaca (I think) was great. I highly recommend them. very professional and very, very attentive. Adrannia, the dive master, was the best I have ever had. Better than our last dive trip at the Great barrier Reef. She was like a mother hen but not over barring.

Room Tip: Room 2009 was lagoon side, and worked for us.

My fifth time to visit Avalon Reef. From May 26th - June 9th was another wonderful two week visit. My entire adult family once again kicked off this trip by being greeted by the friendly staff at the front desk.
The oceanside of the Villas is the best place to stay. The Villas could use some up-dates in decor, but you can't find anyplace any cleaner. The housekeepers are so kind and accommodating.
We always get the breakfast plan and have enjoyed it immensely. The dinner menu has a small selection, but the food is delicious. The lunch menu is much larger with very delicious items. The guacamole and pico de gallo is absolutely fabulous. Ricardo, who has only been back to Avalon Reef since the end of May is working very hard to improve and continue to bring excellent food. For dinner variety, we did some dinners at Avalon and different places around town. We never had a bad meal during our two weeks.
The young men who are responsible serving you for your dining and bar service are all very responsive to your needs. They are a very friendly and wonderful group. I feel so pampered by the care I receive from these young men. They are all great.
The grounds keepers do an excellent job in keeping the Reef looking like a Paradise. This is the most beautiful place on Isla. You are totally encircled by water, the Carribean on one side and the Bay on the other, It is beautiful. The breeze is off of the Carribean. If you want luxury of your unit this is not for you, but if you want beauty, peace and quiet and good service, then this is the place for you. To me it is next to heaven.
My family have been diving with the diving group at Avalon Reef and are very satisfied with there services.
I hope I can get back in October for another relaxing and wonderful time.

Room Tip: Villa rooms on the Carribean side. Top floor if you can walk steps.
