I loved the island of Mujeres. It would be a great place for families...the kids can walk our quite aways, very shallow. The island does tend to be a bit breezy, but enjoyed it. It was nice to be able to walk the short distance to town and try out all the different restaurants. The Avalon had enough lounging chairs for everyone, the waiters could be a bit more attentive to getting you some drinks. But overall loved the hotel and the Island of Mujeres.

Room Tip: All rooms are ocean view.

This the kind of place we like but it is different from other places in cancun. It is smaller and a bit of a walk from the town. Isla Mujeres is a quiet little town. It is on a truly beautiful site. We travel to Mexico a lot and for Mexico this is a very nice hotel. But it is Mexico.... The beds are hard but it seems they all are in Mexico lol! The food was ok but for a short walk or cheap cab ride it is more fun to go onto town for meals. The restaurants in town are all very good and fun. There is a coffee pot but they were stingy with the coffee so we would bring some because we like coffee first thing. The coffee in the restaurant was good though. We would definately go back. We loved the dive shop. It was clean and well maintained. We were there a year ago and it needed some work and it appears they are working hard on it. The staff was all great. Best snorkeling in Mexico right off the beach!

I will start off by saying you can't please everyone!! When we arrived the front desk staff remembered us and upgraded up to an oceanfront suite. They brought up an extra bed so we all had our own bed. Suite is very spacious and the balcony view was to die for. We had alot of rain one day and our room leaked a bit but the whole island was flooded. The Avalon Reef does take a big beating from the elements because of its location but all in all the grounds are amazing. We have gotten an amazing deal the last two years to stay at the Avalon. We paid around $375.00 for 6 nights totally worth it!! The snorkeling is great and pool was fun. Activities director was great and so was the rest of the staff. We don't eat at the resort because there are so many amazing choices so close. It is true this is not a 5 star resort like the ones in Cancun, if that is what you want stay in Cancun. Isla Mujeres is a whole different world than Cancun and most of the resorts reflect that. Will return to the Avalon Reef as soon as we can!!

Room Tip: Choose the suites if you can but if not stay as high up in the towers as you can.

I would never recommend this resort. While the views were outstanding, the service was lacking and the rooms were not much considering the charge. The rooms were very overrated on the resort's web site photos. We all booked the efficiency rooms, which were supposed to include kitchenettes with blender, microwave, coffee pot, and toaster. One room was missing the micro, the other a coffee pot. In addition, my room lacked toilet tissue, coffee cups, lamp and clock radio. I waited better than a day for all 4. When they delivered the lamp and clock radio (two clock radios in fact), neither clock worked. Restaurant service depended on the staff for that day-one day I waited 90 minutes for a beverage. Do not expect refills on soap, coffee, bottled water, etc. The ultimate was their choosing to start loud maintenance on the room next to me at 10PM! After pounding an the adjoining door and calling the room, I finally called the front desk and asked them to have the work stopped.

We have stayed at the Avalon Reef several times over the last 10 years, and while it is on the nicest spot on the island, the hotel is in need of some significant repairs. Sad to see such a great spot go down hill, and the front desk staff are not the friendliest folks.
