“Great place to relax”
Reviewed January 7, 2009

Playa Gaviota Is a great place to spend your vacation! We had room #5 if you are looking at the Apt. from the road it's the top left. We had daily maid service (except on Sunday and Holidays) The sheets and towels where nice and changed daily. Don't plan and making any big dinners as you have basic plates and cups for 4 people. The Apt. is close to the road but the noise never bothered us. As for the rosters in early posts......never heard them! There are some ant's (as there is anywhere on the Island) so do yourself a favor and bring some ant bait traps. We had none after the second day! The manager lives on the property and will do anything in his power to make your stay the best! All you have to do is ask. If you need a golf cart ask and he will get one delivered to the Apt. so you don't have to go all the way into town to rent one (cart cost $55 to $60 24 hours) Need charcoal for the grill...$5.00 and he went and got us a bag! So don't be afraid of the low price it a great deal ! By the way you can catch the bus less then a 1/4 of a mile away for about 50 cents per person and it will take you right to north beach! Cabs are 40 to 50 pesos .

  • Liked — Great price and very quite Great place to recharge!

April, 2008
We found this property to be exactly how we had pictured it. We are so glad that we chose this side of the island away from the hussle and bussle of town. Golf carts, scooters, and taxis, are plentiful. We were able to walk so many places from this area. We stayed in one of the upper units the first few days, then switched to one of the beach cottages. You open the front door, take a step and you are on the beach with the water a few yards away. Perfect. Secluded. The property had a basic kitchenette with plates, utensils, coffee maker, range top, etc. All we needed. It was clean,( a few ants), and the manager provided all we needed. This is not your luxery hotel, plain, no frills.
For $65-$75 per night. Satisfied

We stayed in one of the beach bungalow's. It might not have been a 5 star resort, but it was clean. We had maid service everyday and the porter that lived on site was tripping over himself to be of service to us. We enjoyed the fact it was away from town. It was quite, peaceful and private.

  • Liked — It was secluded
  • Disliked — The beds were not real comfy.

We stayed at Playa Gaviota for 4 nights from 1st June. We stayed in Deluxe Upper 7#. In spite of its name it was actually the lowest apartment with no sea or sunset view. As for 'Deluxe' this couldn't have been further from the truth. It was very shabby, dirty and with a serious ant problem . We chose this place because it had a kitchenette. However, it was so old and grimy that we couldn't use it. The taps on the sink were completey encrusted with a white deposit. The hob unit was greasy and there was a terrible smell of gas when the tap from the wall was turned on even when the gas was lit. The fridge was so old and stained that it looked dirty even if it wasn't (we weren't sure). The table top was pitted and had chunks of fomica missing, leaving bits of chipboard flaking off. It was unhygenic and quite disgusting. The linen had been laundered but everthing was stained and one of the towels we were given looked as if it had been used as a floorcloth. The balcony had 3 plastic chairs - 2 of which were broken. The website states there is daily maidservice We arrived on Friday and left on Tuesday and we only had one visit. There was no change of bed linen even though it was very hot and humid. The beach area was lovely but it wasn't suitable for swimming. We had been travelling around the Yucatan for a couple of weeks and this was the 8th and last place we stayed. It wasn't the cheapest but was the worst by a very long way.

We stayed at Playa Gaviota from Feb. 28 - March 9, 2007 & absolutely loved it! Beautiful beach, secluded, & private. We stayed in the Beach Cottage #1 (I would recommend cottage #1 rather than #2 - we got late afternoon shade). Our cottage had a kitchen w/ a 4-burner gas stove, small frig, toaster, coffer-maker, & blender. BR was quite large - 2 queen size beds, TV, & a great AC (with a remote), bathroom was typical for Mexico (dribble shower!) but had a nice, big closet. We were right on the beach which has wonderful, clean white sand. Water was shallow with quite a bit of sea grass but there were channels through the sea grass that you could see where you were going. We brought along water shoes - great investment! The roosters? Yeah, they were annoying - we learned, after one sleepless nite, to keep the AC in the BR on - no problems then. We would definately stay here again!

The hotel room was nice and big. It was nice there because there is much more privacy than some hotels. Most of the time there wasn't anyone on the beach. There was a refrigerator and a range, but the range was working. It would have been nice to leave the windows open at night but the rooster would crow every night, in the middle of the night. On our second night the rooster began to crow at 11:30 pm and didn't stop until late morning. The management was hard to get a hold of and when we first arrived we had trouble finding someone to let us into our room. They also must have had a room problem because when we arrived they told us they were going to give us a different room than we had reserved. Later in the week someone knocked on our door at night and told us that they were supposed to be staying in our room. The hotel is far from downtown, but it was easy to catch a cab into town. It is not expensive but can add up if you have to do it every day. Besides the lack of sleep and inept management it was a nice place to stay. We waded out in the water many days and found very cool sea shells. We could lay on the beach there by ourselves. The only other complain I have about the hotel is the amount of ants in the room. During our stay there were many ants running around the floor and on the counters.

This was our 2nd time at the Gaviota and we really do love the rooms, the people, the beach, etc. The location is excellent. We walked to the end of Sac Bajo each morning (he runs, I walk) and would stop buy and see the turtles and have a bite to eat at Tiburon or Lanchero's on the way back. We always rent a scooter for our stay so we can go into town and around the island, but the bus stop is just down the road. The only drawback is the roosers next door which start up at 2:30 am each morning. Now, I am a farm girl and am use to roosters -- but these guys really do start up at 2:30am and go until about noon. You cannot leave your windows open, even though it is cool enough to, and the air conditioner noise is necessary to cover up the crowing. I was so tired by the time we left to move in town for our last 4 days! We won't stay here next year because of this, even though it is a great place. Maybe they could buy the chickens and have a barbeque!!!
