Garrafon de Castilla
Reviewed November 5, 2012

We opted out of going to Garrafon as we had been ziplining already. So we visited Garrafon de Castilla. it was very rustic in it's curb-appeal, but the snorkeling was amazing. As soon as you stepped in the water you were surrounded by fish to admire.

Had a blast feeding the fish and a decent snorkel spot from shore. Interesting variety of fish to swim around with, some good sized schools.
Nice beach to veg out at and and the outdoor showers were nice to clean up afterwards.

Had a great day snorkeling. Went to Isla on a day trip and wanted to snorkel. We Passed by it twice and had to go back. It is set back off of the main road down a hill so be prepared to turn. We brought our own snorkel gear, but paid for a locker. The beach entry is pretty rocky so some may find they needed water shoes. Once you get past the entry it is sandy bottom. Had a wonderful time and saw many fish. We did not feed the fish ourselves, but the fish are very friendly and they will swim right next to your face. Try to find the old dock that was destroyed by a hurricane on the bottom of the ocean floor. There will be many fish swimming in that area.

For 50 pesos each and 10 pesos for fish food it was quite good value. There changing rooms and toilets and lockers for a small extra fee.

The beach itself is small and a little stony, beach shoes are recommended as entering the water did hurt our feet a little. There are plenty of beach chairs and parasols and showers right next to the beach. We enjoyed feeding the fish, which surrounded us at the sight of the cup in our hands. Be careful though the big silver fish did give me a bit of a nip.

Unfortunately the day we went was a little stormy and I think that spoilt the snorkelling visibility a little, so maybe we didn't experience all that Garrafon de Castilla had to offer.

The cafe/bar offered a fair choice of snacks and drinks. We had the beef nachos which were very tasty. The staff in general were very quiet and did not interact much at all, which stood out as unusual to us based on the other experiences we had in Isla Mujeres.

The grounds overall were beautifully planted with a wide array of tropical plants and flowers which we enjoyed photographing. I would say that we had a nice visit but there are nicer beaches that are free to visit.

Getting there would be tricky without hiring a golf cart which costs about £25/$35 and is well worth it as it is really good fun. We travelled all over the island and it was great! If the golf cart place doesn't give you a map they do them in the tourist information place opposite the ferry port.
