“A must see on the island”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 22, 2012

We enjoyed Punta Sur. Loved the statues plus there is an original mayan ruin there too. We had a light breakfast at the restaurant and the view was amazing!

“Great views”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 12, 2012

If you've hired a buggy it's worth a visit. Punta Sur is the south point of the island and is a rocky cliff with views across the sea. It is a huge contrast to the north point, which has calms waters and beaches.

There are some well crafted modern Mayan sculptures around the parking area and some interesting photo opportunities. To get right to the south point there is a charge and walk through an area with modern art exhibits. We could see the art from outside and decided that it was not value for money so we didn't go right to the point.

There's a restaurant and gift shops that sell the same souvenirs as you would get throughout the Yucatan. On the whole it was a little disappointing and we left after about 20 mins and headed for the north coast instead.

“Incredible Sunrise”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed September 6, 2012

Once of the most beautiful views on Isla Mujeres. We have gone to see the sunrise every time. Follow the locals and slip under the rope and walk with them out to the point, they come to walk and climb down to fish, we take pictures. Once the sun comes up and the park opens officially we walk back to the entrance and buy our tickets. Then we walk through the beautiful sculptures and wonder down and around the sea cliff trails. The park has a large majestic statue of the Mayan Triple Goddess of the Moon, Ocean and Fertility, Ixchel. the Eastern tip of the Cliff of the Dawn holds the ruins of what is left of her temple. The island and this temple was at one point the focal point for the Worship of Ixchel and was the central temple of healing for female issues. When pirates first came upon the island, after the mayan temple had fallen into some ruin, the sailors found statues of Ixchel all over. This is how the island got it's name.

The park is full of iguanas who are sun bathing on the rocks, and along the path to the temple ruins are modern art statues from national artists. The park is a beautiful site and well worth the trip. Admission was 30 pesos a person, so about $2.50 USD.

You will want to rent a golf cart and head over early - sun rises just after 6am and is worth getting up for.

Filled with iguanas! Plus they have a mini shopping area and great views of the ocean over a cliff. Don't be afraid of the iguanas, they are more afraid off people anyway.

“So worth a few dollars!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 28, 2012

This place is worth a visit. But if you go, go all the way down to the point and walk the trail. The carved out caves are beautiful! It is really awe inspiring to stand at the very edge of the walkway at the eastern-most tip.
