We had originally booked a trip to Holbox to swim with the Whale Sharks, however the are not in Holbox this year and are close to Cancun. We quickly had to change our travel plans. We did not want to stay in Cancun and found this island on tripadvisor-Isla Mujeres. We stayed at Hotel La Joya based on the previous wonderful reviews on tripadvisor. We could not have asked for a better hotel. We do not like resorts and crowds-and wanted a smaller hotel. The hotel was clean, hotel staff very friendly, and it was on the water. Each room has a balcony that overlooks the water. They even have a small private beach where you could take out Kayaks and snorkel. They had room service and could either deliver you food/drinks to your room or by the pool. The food is really good. We could not believe the price! We would gladly return and hope to some day. Of note-the whale sharks were phenomenal and we saw over 20 of them!

We stayed in room number 6 (orquidea). We had a nice size grassy terrace and a nice sized room. The room includes a safe, mini fridge, and AC. On the terrace there was a hammock, lounger's and a table and chairs. The atmosphere at the hotel is very quiet and laid back. You will find the guest's range from solo traveler's to families with children. The grounds were well kept and there is a nice pool with steps down to a small private beach. The manager runs the hotel, while his wife does the housekeeping. We felt very secure here and never once worried about leaving things in the room, etc. They have a restaraunt that has choices for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are a couple restaraunts within walking distance, El Pueblito, Cafe Alamar, Maria's Kan Kin. You are also within walking distance to El Garrafon, Garrafon De Castillo, and Capitan Dulche Beach Club. There are no tienda's near by within walking distance. If we needed a cab, we usually would catch one within 5 minutes of walking down the main road. If you are a person who enjoys being in town and being a bit more social at times the location of this hotel may be a issue just because you will need a taxi or cart to go anywhere else on the other side of the island. They do sell beer and cocktails from the restaraunt for convenience as well. Cerveza was 30 peso's per drink and cocktails were 50 peso's, bottles of water were 15 peso's. Another recomendation is to hit up a tienda before arriving and grabbing waters, snacks, drinks.. etc. So you have everything on hand.

If you have any mobility issues, this may not be the place for you. There are several levels to the hotel and grounds and only staircases. You must be able to navigate several staircases to get around the hotel from the entrance to your room, to the pool, etc.

We are almost three weeks into our four week vacation staying at La Joya.We can only echo what others have said about the beauty, tranquility and service of this wonderful hotel.
What has surprised us is the restaurant. Chef Juan and host Alex serve some of the best food and drinks (best mojito!)that we have had so far on Isla. Whether it is omelettes for breakfast or their delicious hamburgers and (best) fries, ceviche, dinners with tequila shrimp or Arrachera steak, all of the meals have been so very good.
Its only a short ride from town or if you are touring an easy stop for a meal.
We highly recommend La Joya restaurant.
