I spent three nights at the Francis Arlene with three female friends. It is in an ideal location—one block from the semi-rocky beach, five blocks from the beautiful Playa Norte, a few blocks from the grocery store, and two blocks from the main pedestrian drag with all the restaurants and shops. We spent most of our time at the north end of the island, only venturing south for scuba diving and drinks at a posh hotel bar.

Our room had two double beds and one twin bed. It also had a small kitchen with a refrigerator and assorted dishes and utensils, seemingly amassed over time. Filtered water is provided for drinking and brushing your teeth which is a plus. There are also two bookcases on the upper floors full of random books for the beach.

Our room was on the first floor but there wasn't much noise at night (aside from the howling wind) with the windows closed. Our room had a fan and A/C unit. It is true that most of our showers were lukewarm or cool, but that probably relates to demand on the water heater for the time of day. It didn’t damper any of our moods—as it reminded us to avoid a “Charlotte incidence” (reference to the SATC movie). I don’t understand the comments about the plumbing. We didn’t have any problem with the toilets (just don’t put toilet paper in it!).

Overall, I think the hotel is a good value, and its perfectly laidback style made for an enjoyable stay. Isla de Mujeres is simply beautiful, and I can't wait to return for a massage on the beach and a boat ride at sunset.

The location was great, but after looking around the island found cheaper options for the same amenities. Also, they added in an extra tax when we checked out that they didn't tell us about when we asked for the rate. Wireless was also only available in the lobby when we were there. Would have loved to see a hot tub on roof, there is a gazebo but no amenities.

My husband and I returned to Francis Arlene after being there 12 years ago. Not much has changed except the staff has gotten older. The rooms are pretty basic with a KS bed, fridge, hot water and fan. Our room had a small balcony. They are clean and the A/C works well (room 19). Some rooms are darker than others but you don't spend much time in the room. It is a short walk to the beach and 5 seconds from a nice boardwalk along the ocean. It goes on for quite a while...nice walk.
We did check out other hotels and found that their price was a bit more expensive (500 pesos/night) but if you were looking to spend about $45.00 then it is ok....basic and clean.

This facility is very good. We have stayed here twice, and have always been efficiently and pleasantly greeted. We love the location - you can walk to anywhere you want to go - beach, town, restaurants, etc. yet it is quiet and relaxing.
A couple of people have had complaints about hot water and toilet facilities. Please remember you are on a SMALL ISLAND and this comes with the territory. This is a small, quaint hotel owned and run by locals, not a big all-inclusive hotel run by outsiders. If there is a problem on the island, there may be a problem with this hotel. However, if you want a real island experience rather than the impersonal resort experience, you have to take the inconvenience with the ambiance.
We are going back to Mexico next year and will again stay at the Francis Arlene hotel. It simply can't be beat!

I'm not sure if I got the worst room on this property but I cannot recommend this place and feel let down by the other reviewers who recommended it. The property itself is beautiful, but the rooms are not. Our toilet didn't flush and leaked all over the bathroom, which is always fun on tile floors. Our beds (I was promised a king and was given two doubles and my complaint fell on deaf ears) had some type of waterproof barrier underneath the sheets, which was extremely annoying. Luckily we were only at the hotel for one night or I would have switched to another establishment.
