“Villa Rolandi is the perfect get away!”
Reviewed March 15, 2005

My husband and I stayed at Villa Rolandi for 5 days. It is the perfect place to relax and unwind. Only 20 rooms w/ an unbelievable infinity pool and the cushiest chairs ever. Nice sized rooms and there is a hottub on the balcomy and steam showers in the Suites. Villa Rolandi has the best restaurant on the island and amazing service.

Isla Mujeres is perfect if you don't want the activity and craziness of Cancun but want the crystal blue water.

We will be returning!

My husband and I went for 8 nights at the end of Nov04 for our honeymoon and could not have asked for more. This place was fabulous!! The food was delicious, the room was perfect, the infinity pool was great, and the staff was extremely accomodating. I did request a 2nd or 3rd floor room but we were given a first floor room upon arrival. I was upset at first but it turned out to be great. It was actually nice to just walk out of the sliding door to the pool and be able to run back in when needed. We loved the fact that VR was secluded but yet you could hop on a rented golf cart and explore the island in an hour. (Check out the beach at the NaBalam hotel.. just gorgeous.)Other people have written that the golf cart at the hotel was expensive ..but for only about $10 more per day it was so worth not having to call & negotiate with other rental outfits in town-just reserve a golf cart the night before at the front desk and in the morning it's right there waiting for you. Make sure to go to Garrafon water park..not far from the hotel... if you have time. you can relax, swim, snorkel, eat & drink all day for about $55. We also went swimming w/ the dolphins (right next to Villa Rolandi) That was cool!! A little pricey but well worth it. $120 each..
I could go on all day about how great this island and hotel were. If you like a relaxing, romantic hideaway and appreciate great food..VR is the spot..

I had the great pleasure of staying at Villa Rolandi in Isla Mujeres last week. A very small hotel with only 20 rooms (huge, very clean, great views and jacuzzi ) where I have been treated like a queen. The staff is great and is always there to answer all your needs. The food at the restaurant is fantastic.

It is the perfect place for a romantic getaway (dinner on the beach) and if you look for quietness and beautiful settings. Definitely not for the Cancun crowd...

We just returned from Villa Rolandi, having stayed from Feb. 17-21, 2005. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed our stay, beginning with the ride on the Cocoon, followed by our introduction to the hotel, complete with cool, scented towels and a welcome drink. We were given a sheet of activities that the hotel could arrange, but were not in any way pressured to purchase them.

Our room was on the second floor, and had all of the amenities that others have described. The room was a serene, comfortable haven, and romantic in its simplicity. We loved it. The satellite radio (once we figured out how it worked) was great for background music, and showering in the large shower with speakers overhead was a treat. Our hot tub was very private, but was so warm that we only used it once--there simply was no need, between the shower, the pool and the beach! I thought this was ironic, considering how much I had been looking forward to it. Others have mentioned that the walls are thin, and they are. We could hear the couple next door clearly enough during an argument to know that she was running late because she had to shave her legs! (How could they argue in such a romantic setting, especially after what we had heard them doing the night before?)

The pool was beautiful, and the water was warm. Many people seemed to prefer the chairs by the pool, which were often full. The beach was a pretty little cove which was relatively uncrowded, where we enjoyed many hours. I loved that there were large umbrellas, allowing a choice of sun or shade. The service on the beach was incredible--Ponce and Ariel were attentive and thoughtful, not intrusive. At first, we were hesitant to order drinks on the beach, thinking that the prices would be outrageous, but in fact, they were quite reasonable as well as delicious (excellent pina coladas). We visited Playa Norte after hearing so much about how it was the famous beach on Isla Mujeres, but after wandering throught the crowds for a while, we looked at each other and simultaneously said we'd rather be back on Rolandi's beach.

The restaurant was very good, with such an extensive menu that you would never have to eat the same thing twice, even on a long stay. I agree with someone else's comment that I would have liked to have more Mexican food choices. The fish in banana leaves with a Mayan sauce was outstanding, as was a weekly special of shrimp with pasta in a ginger and Prosecco sauce. We liked these two entrees so much that we ordered them again on our last day, despite the huge menu. The descriptions on the menu are not always thorough--some of our selections were different from what we expected based on the menu and our waiters' descriptions. For example, some dishes had cream sauces or very heavy broths when lighter fare was expected. The portions were enormous--appetizers were sometimes enough for a whole meal! Most of the waiters were friendly and gave excellent service. We found a few who were not as timely or as friendly, but they seemed to be those who knew less English and were perhaps a bit more reserved because of that. Our favorite waiter was Jesus--he learned our names early on, and never failed to greet us by name each time he saw us. In fact, he seemed to go out of his way to say hello, even if he didn't have a reason to be anywhere in our vicinity. Two other great waiters were Jorge and Juan.

Continental breakfast was nothing special, but who needs a big meal when you are eating so much otherwise? On the other hand, the romantic dinner on the beach is a highlight that should not be missed--even when you have seen it set up for others, it is another thing entirely when you walk onto that beach for your turn. Just be sure to tip the waiters extra well for it--it's a lot of extra work for them, and a memory you will cherish for your entire life.

As for the rest of the island, we had fun for a few hours exploring the town, but it is nothing special. Playa Norte, as I said, is beautiful but crowded. We were shocked at the living conditions of some of the locals, having gotten the impression that the island is a resort destination. Also, we never found out why so many of the structures on the island were reduced to rubble. We would be walking through a residential block and see a number of well-cared-for row homes, then a gap with a pile of concrete rubble, then more modest but nice homes with the occasional gap, etc. This was noticeable in every kind of neighborhood, from the most exclusive to the poorest of the poor. Very strange.

We did our exploration by moped, which we would highly recommend. However, in town, traffic became quite heavy, and was a mix of mopeds, taxis, and golf carts, all of which travel at different speeds. Generally speaking, people were polite about passing each other. Taxis are fairly cheap--54 pesos to get from one end of the island to the other. Fares are posted and consistent.

We enjoyed the south end of the island, which we found very scenic. El Garrafon looked like fun, but we didn't have time to check it out. There is more there than just snorkeling.

The Ultramar ferry was great for going into Cancun when the Cocoon was not available. While in Cancun, we checked out a shopping area, had lunch at a Yucatecan restaurant in Cancun City called Los Almendros, where I highly recommend the Sopa de Lima (chicken and lime soup with tortilla strips--I had a craving for it today!), had drinks at the Ritz-Carlton (what a beautiful beach), and dinner at Mango Tango (a friendly place with a party atmosphere and a stage show that is hard to describe).

A fun and delicious place for lunch was Playa Tiburon, a little over a mile down the road from Villa Rolandi, across the street from a moped rental stand. It looks like a dive from the road, but is great inside. We had the grilled fish, which was really delicious.

We thoroughly enjoyed Villa Rolandi, and would recommend it very highly. Our only complaint was that we had to come home!

If you enjoy large hotels with lots of entertainment and action, then look elsewhere.

If you enjoy high standards, extra touches of luxury combined with a relaxed informal atmosphere and very good food, then Villa Rolandi will suit you.

When we booked we thought it was quite expensive, but the price is justified in all respects. The crossing from Cancun on 'Cocoon' to the private hotel dock set the mood.

A well run and slick operation in a casual understated sort of way. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay earlier this month.

We stayed at Rolandi's Gourmet Beach Club for two weeks in July 2004. We had an absolutely wonderful time and loved the free continental breakfast that was slipped into a slot at the time you want each morning. How unique!! We also loved the small beach and lovely serenity pool. They also had a debugger machine that's noiseless between the pool and dining room and so we had absolutely NO bugs of any kind. We loved the three tier dining room so if you wanted, you could sit out on the last tier over the water and watch the sunset as you had dinner, or you could sit on the first largest tier under the palapa roof. The dining room is open but still no flies to speak of. The staff was very friendly and helpful at all times although the manager was somewhat "stiff" and hard to talk to. The beach had only a few palapas which were complemented by umbrellas. Unfortunately, the unbrellas don"t really give you a lot of protection from the sun's ultra violet rays so you have to be careful sitting under them for long periods. Also, the beach is NOT private as advertised. The rule is, if you eat there you can use the beach (not the pool). So about half the time the beach was taken over by large local families who would eat in the dining room or on the beach and stay within the house rules. This was the only thing that peeved us and we prefered the beach and water over the pool. Otherwise, we had a wonderful time and loved the multi-spiket shower.
