“did not stay here, but dined at the romantic beach restaurant”
Reviewed September 26, 2010

We didn't stay here (We stayed at Secreto, just a short walk away), but we dined one night on the beach restaurant of Hotel Na Balam, which was the most romantic waterfront dining of our trip to Isla Mujeres. My recommendation is to skip dining at the Sunset Grill (with cheesy American beach singer-songwriters "entertaining" the diners), and instead eat dinner here at the Hotel Na Balam. It's a great memory, as if we were the only ones on a private beach, looking out on the ocean, feet in sand, enjoying just the scenery and the seafood. The sun had gone down, we saw a private boat anchored out on the Carribean, and the server told us that the people on the boat had dined at the restaurant and returned to their boat.

Great hotel, right on the beach. Nice clean, very large, spacious rooms with air conditioning and ceiling fans. Great beds and umbrellas on the beach. Walk down the beach to great little beach restaurants or eat at the hotel reataurant. Hotel restaurant is a little expensive, but almost worth it for the view. The beds are a little hard, but fine. It is not fancy, no tv or phones. I had a hammock in my room I could lay in and it was so relaxing.

Try the yoga even if you don't normally do yoga. Very nice teachers, very low key and great palapa atmosphere. Definitely added to the experince. I also recommend the massage. MAssage therapist was very good.

Great restaurant in town was Olivia's and many others! Had a great time and always love Islamujeres. Will definitely stay at the NA Balam again!

If you're looking for a comforatable stay with responsive staff or caring owernship with authentic Mexican taste, this is not the place for you. We've gone to the Nabalam twice in 3 years. 1st stay was for 8 days. This one was for 11 days. Our 1st stay was marginably better, but in peak season, so also twice as much.

To be fair, 1st, the best of Nabalam is the beach, 2nd is the food at their restaurant. Everything else goes down straight hill from there. There were a few bright spots in our otherwise misrable Nablam experience. There were a few staff standouts that tried to make what was an otherwise aweful stay better. The good news is that you can stay anywhere on the island and use that beach. You do not have to stay at the Nabalam.

The complaints are numerous as we stayed their for 11 days.

1. Apathetic, patronizing staff and ownership
2. Aweful mosquitto problem
3. Box spring matresses that are worse than slepping on the floor
4. Slower than usual restuarant service, even for Mexico
5. Tip demanding staff
6. Little to no normal hotel items, such as a phone, TV or alarm clock.
7. Old or Malfunctioning Air Conditioning (Real nice with 90% humidity)
8. Antiquated reservation system that cancelled inadvertantly cancelled our reservation
9. Billed for food and drinks that were not ours
10. Definately over-priced and not worth it at all.

With that said, my inlaws have been going for 13 years and likely will not go again. They have a bevy of complaints as well. We will most defiantely pass on the Nabalam. For all the hell we experienced there, they gave us a one night deduction from our bill. We spent over 2,500 there. Par for the course with the Nabalam I guess.

We honestly can't understand some of the not-so-positive reviews about Na Balam after we spent six wonderful days there in early July. We are well traveled and have already seen lots of amazing places! Na Balam for sure is one of it and we loved it!
The staff was super friendly and helpful, our rooms were wonderful (and very very clean as well as huge), and the beach was just amazing with clear, calm, perfectly turquoise water, the perfect invitation to snorkel! The food was awesome, served at the restaurant directly located at the beach - a tropical dream, as is the garden-like setting right in the middle of a coconut grove!
We have absolutely no complaints about this hotel, its staff and the location, whatsoever, and we would always recommend this place.
During our stay the hotel had to struggle with the fallout of tropical storm "Alex" which meant that the perfectly white beach was partially covered with seaweed. The hotel's management really bent over backwards to clean the beach.
Some of the reviews criticize that the restaurant is more on the pricey side. Maybe - but only the dinner - and the food is very much worth the money. This place and Isla Mujeres with its little shops and restaurants are a couple of universes away from plastic-Cancun.
To sum up - we've seen a lot of beautiful tropical places, in the Caribbean and in South East Asia, and we would place Na Balam and the island itself very high on top. We live near Washington D.C. and we will be back pretty soon.

We stayed here for our honeymoon and while our first impression was not the best... we arrived in the pouring rain, the rain had come into our bedroom creating a small lake and it took someone 24 hours to fix this situation. However fix it they did as our room was kept so clean for the next 4 days, we received a wonderful candle lit dinner on the beach and great personal service from then on. We were coming from Vegas and it took us about a day to calm down and get into the rhythm of doing nothing and then it was bliss.
The breakfast, lunch and happy hour is wonderful. You eat barefoot, on the beach with fresh fruit or pancakes, tacos and fajitas. Dinner is also wonderful but the menu is a little too saucy and colored for our tastes. Don't worry about prices as while it may cost more than other places on Isla it still is far less than anything I have ever experienced around the world. If you are looking for clean, relaxed, calm heaven this is the place to go.

I was really looking forward to staying here after seeing the website, but the reality of the place falls short. Our room was so dirty (stained mirrors and sinks, dirty floors, dirty walls, dirty shower) and finished off by an air conditioning unit that was shaking and whistling, we had to go back down to reception to ask for another one. While the second room was better, it was still absolutely not up to acceptable standards with an outdated little bathroom and stains on the floor. This is located in a busy part of Isla Mujeres, so if what you are after is lots of beach activity with a lot of other people you might be interested.

My husband and I started our honeymoon in Na Balam, we stayed in one of the suites. The room was lovely, large and bright, it also had a hammock which we loved! Our patio area was pretty but we would have preferred if it was not shared with the other suites.
The staff were friendly and the beach was great.
My only complaint is that the restuarant and bar are vastly overpriced especially the dinner menu.
There are lots of other great places to eat and drink on the island so I wouldnt let that deter you.
