We chose Casa el Pio after my fiance's sister went with her boyfriend in November and they recommended it highly. Last year on the island we stayed at an all inclusive beach front property, which was really nice, but we knew we wanted to try all the great restaurants on the island this time, and thought we'd try a small boutique hotel instead. Casa el Pio is easy to find, and close to the busiest parts of Hidalgo. What is nice, is that is is just past the square at the government building, where the touristy areas end, so we got to be minutes from the action, but had almost not street noise at night. It is about a 10 minute walk to the best beaches, but we didn't mind, considering the money we saved staying off the beach. Overall, the location was great and convenient. Jill greeted us when we arrived, and had been checking our flight, so she knew it was delayed. She was friendly and welcoming, and gave us a quick overview of the hotel and nearby restaurants.
I couldn't believe how much space we had for $72! We had a bedroom and a separate living area! Having a fridge was nice, so we could keep cold drinks on hand, and the beer and tequila that were in it when we arrived was a nice touch. I was glad to find a safe in the room to keep our valuables and passports without any worries. The decor was fresh and really nice with beautiful artwork throughout. Every day the maids would leave fresh towels on our bed with fun designs (a bird in a nest, kissing swans, etc). The bed felt a little firm, and our backs were a little sore the first morning, but we must have gotten used to it, because we were fine the rest of the week. The air conditioning worked very well, and we could adjust it ourselves.
It was a little embarrassing when we went to Jill one morning because we hadn't had hot water the first two days, only to find out that the labels on the faucets were backwards. I had tried both, but the hot water needed a few minutes to come on, so I must not have kept it on long enough. Ooops!! But once we had that sorted out, we had plenty of hot water! The locally made soap and shampoo was a nice touch, and a water cooler on the patio for guest use was convenient.
I would absolutely stay at Casa el Pio again, and would recommend it to anyone who was headed to the lovely Isla Mujeres!
