We enjoyed a wonderful week in the Cabana and another in the rooftop Villa (what a nice view of the ocean and Cancun !) Our Accomodations were perfect for our wants and needs. The smallness of El Milagro marina really has a lot to offer it's guests. Though we kept mostly to ourselves the staff were very helpful with any questions and needs we had In fact we never really needed anything more.
The rooms are nicely decorated with lots of colored tile and functionality, we really liked the painted sinks, I would have bought one in town if I'd had the luggage space. The string-lighting inside and out was neat too. The shower water was hot and lasted long enough for each of us to have our own quick hot shower. The kitchenettes were great for making breakfasts and keeping snacks, lots of table and cupboard space too. We bought fish and lobster (thanks to Julio) from the fisherman next door and cooked it on our gas stove. All appliances you need worked well from the toilets to the air conditioning units and ceiling fans to the toaster oven to the reading lamps. Also, great cable T.V with many english channels....there are also many english books in the units to read. The Cabana had a set of patio doors with screens which open onto a patio with chairs and an umbrella overlooking the marina and dock with little private beach. Beds were firm but not hard, bedding was comfortable and warm. Everything was clean and tidy and houskeeping and laundry was available whenever we asked. Laundry could be done by the staff or on our own.
Geckos at night and birds could be seen on the grounds which is private, sunny or shady spots can be found. Many Iguanas and Geckos lay around when the sun was out.
El Milagro Marina is in fact a working marina, albiet a small and quiet one. I was a little aprehensive about this but I can assure you there is no need for concern about noise, crowds or traffic. It's a very casual place, with only a handfull of sailors and fisherman stopping in to use the facilities, like showers cooking and route planning and maintenace. It was cool to watch the sailboats and big fishing yachts cruise buy and chat with the sailors and fisherman from Canada and the States who docked at El Milagro as they worked on their boats, planned thier routes, or ate their catch.
10 min walk to downtown or a 20 pesos cab ride on the seaside paved road with sidewalks on either side. Cabs are plentiful on Isla Mujeres and we never waited more than a moment for a taxi to pick us up ouside the gate. We chose to take the free bikes many times during our stay which was a great way to see the island, go to the beach or run errands. During our last week on the Island we rented a Golf Cart for 24hrs at a cost of about 55 dollars, a little expensive but still a nice way to get around and see the whole island, you can park it safely and for free at the Marina.
Two doors down is the Soggy Peso for drinks and food but Isla has a tremendous amount if restaraunts and other treats. Besides North Beach, this is the best part of Isla Mujeres. Right beside the El Milagro Marina is a local fisherman yard and docks, they will sell you the freshest seafood you'll ever buy for a reasonable price. Try buying seven lobster tails and two kilo's of fish fillets for 35 dollars back home ! I also enjoyed watching these guys clean and otherwise prepare thier catch for sale, cutting and chopping it all up after getting in from a day of fishing.
The little store right at the entrance of the marina was very convenient and inexpensive. It had quite a bit of stuff for such a small place, butter, limes, milk, eggs, candy, ice cream, cold beer, coolers, snacks etc. The little beach, between two docks and overlooking the marina bay, was private enough and had nice reclining loungers, hammocs and big palm trees and palapas for shade.
The free kayaks were great to take across the bay and snorkel out at the reefs by the lighthouse, we saw hundreds of fish there. There was a tandem and two single keyaks, life jackets and paddles were available.
The roof top Villa offers the same amenities as the Cabana, only it's bigger and has an extra bedroom and a living/dining room. Both places are lovely and quiet considering how close the main road is. The roof top which the Villa sits on is big and offers a 180 degree view of the mainland and the carribean sea. There is a runway near by, but it is hardly used, we only saw one small airplane land there in two weeks.
The rooms pictured on El Milagro Marina and Villa's website are acurately depicted youwill get what you see.
The only inconvenience we experienced was the rather poor condition of the mountain bikes, while the free use of the bikes were greatly appreciated only a few of the many bikes were in fair condition, most needed some maintenance ie. flat tires, in-operable shifters and brakes and loose handle bars, missing pedals etc.
El Milagro has regular staff looking after the needs of thier guests, you need something, directions, ideas for activities, buy seafood from the fisherman, need to check your e-mail, make a phone call to cancun, need laundry done ? Just ask and they will help you.
Security is 24 hours, someone is there all night.
We both really enjoyed El Milagro and would stay there again.
