After spending 10 days inAkumal we finished off our last 4 days at the P.A. We decided to walk from Ferry to Resort and saw a lot of changes since our last visit to the island 4 years ago ( boy has it gotten busy) Upon arrival at the resort we were informed that the room we had booked (room with jaccuzi on deck) were all full but the Manager decided to upgrade us to a suite.( hey we booked in August) Nice treat, the infamous Guilermo showed us to our suite (201) yes ground floor but looking out onto the beautiful grounds and no stairs to climb. We did not do the all inclusive because of the great restaurants on the Island, Guilermo was excellent at sharing some of the excellent eating places and we tried them(very good)
This resort is over the top, each time we went out and about in town we always could hear the constant noises (cars, loud music etc,) but once passing thru the lobby area it was like entering a different world(peaceful and quiet) The beach here is very good with padded loungers and even 4 beach beds(we got one our last day) yes the rope is not far out in the water but it drops off quickly so lots of space for swimming. Yes the pool is not heated but after being on the loungers in the hot sun was it refreshing. There are two warm tubs(first time I have ever seen one at a Mexican resort) hidden behind bushes behind the massage hut.
Restauraunt service at breakfast always seemed very slow while beach service was excellent(Jorge & Elizabeth)
The only thing that was disappointing had nothing to do with the resort but the north beach where once it was beautiful to walk down now it is packed with beach clubs who will not even allow you to sit on your towel there without being charged( hey what about the public beach rule) The Privilege is about the only one who follows this rule with their area staked back at least 20 ft.

This hotel has much to like. Great location on Isla - close to the ferry, close to town, close to North Beach. From PA is is an easy walk to everything. The grounds are lovely - nicely landscaped, super clean & restrooms readily available. The pools are beautiful though a bit cool. Also, there are two hot tubs, though they too were cool. We did not buy the all inclusive because there are so many great restaurants in Isla to try. We did have the breakfast buffet each day & it was wonderful. There are plenty of lounge chairs & great lounge beds both at the pool & on the beach.
Unfortnately, there were several minuses. Our room & view were lovely, but I just didn't get the totally unequiped kitchen. Nothing - not a glass, plate, pot etc. What's the point? Also the uppercabinets were the same width (30 inches) as the lower, rather than stepped back & so trying to do anything in the kitchen was very awkward. We had a suite with an immense living room, but the lighting was poor & the room was poorly furnished. There was one couch & then some tables. Like the kitchen, the living room made little sense.
My husband & I felt as though the original intention was for this place was to be condos, but the plan changed. Another guest told us, he felt like they ran out of money in the middle of building it. These are all guesses - who knows?
All that said, PA is a lovely place. The staff was nice. The place was super clean.

My wife and I just returned from our weekend vacation/anniversary at the beautiful Privilege Aluxes on Playa Norte, Isla Mujeres, Mexico. Despite some of the negative comments posted here about this hotel, it was perhaps the nicest hotel I have ever stayed at, second only to the 5 star resort we stayed at in Greece. The location is great right next to the beach, the staff was very friendly and helpful and the rooms we in great shape. People that have complained about this hotel and the island in general need to remember that this is an island and everything there must be brought in on a ferry so if something breaks at the hotel, they just cannot run down the street to Lowes and get what they need!
The food was great however the drinks are a little weak as some of the other reports noted. But if you are there to get drunk then you need to be staying somewhere else, Cancun perhaps. Sabor had a very good breakfast and dinner buffets, the beach lounge had a great lunch menu and Satay was awesome; great Tai Food! Pools were cold but bearable there were three hot tubs but I could not figure out how to turn them on, two are secluded and one is up front by the pools. Pool at our two story suite was cold as well.
The beach was great, fine sands light breeze. The hotel had plenty of palapias so there was never an issue for shade or lounge chairs. Jorge, Jesus and the rest of the staff at the beach took great care of us and our glasses never stayed empty. I will say the beach is very relaxed and open for those who like to wear “alternative” swimwear, thongs are topless was not the norm but was there. We even had some women decide to change swimsuits right on the beach, no issue if you don’t make it one. I think the best thing I can say about the Norte Playa of Isla Mujeres is that I met several vacationers from Cancun who were making the ferry trip out to the island for the beaches on Isla Mujeres
Overall we had a great time and I highly recommend this hotel and this location. We cannot wait to return! A special thanks to Jamie working the front desk for all his help in making this stay even better.

Got back from a fabulous 14nights at PA at the end of Jan/ beginning of Feb. We are already working out when we can go back!

My husband and I arrived in desperate need for some R&R after enduring the long 'flu season in the UK but slightly apprehensive after reading some of the TA reviews. We needn't have worried at all!

Room
From our initial arrival, where we were greeted with a glass of chilled bubbly, the stress melted away. We were lucky enough to get a good price on Rm 632 (Platinum Suite) AI. I had seen photos but when the bell-boy Guillermo showed us to our room I was still stunned. Huge living area/ kitchenette/ bathroom with marble everywhere, and then there was the 2nd floor...We pretty much got straight in the roof-top pool (to enjoy a Corona watching the sun-set). Views are beautiful - my husband is a keen photographer and struggled to tear himself away!

Food
We went to Cafe Del Mar for evening meal half the stay and had some delicious fish and steak. We chose to have lunch there every day as you can eat at your palapa and I became addicted to the Tacos De Camaron! Plenty of freshly grilled seafood or other options if this isn't your thing.

Thai restaurant was good but we only went once as didn't like having to book in advnace. Red snapper excellent though.

Breakfast in Sabor was great for us - freshly prepared omlettes and tons of fruit if you were feeling virtuous, pastries, sausages, scrambled eggs, pancakes if not! We also enjoyed the buffet evening meals as my husband & I have quiet different appetites in terms of volume of food! Particularly liked the delicois beef tacos on Mexican night (I ate about six) and the calamari spaghetti you could have freshly prepared. Delicious tiramisu. The captain of Sabor, Rodolfo, is alwyas around & keen to hear any suggestions for improvement.
The service we received from the team in Sabor was excellent (thanks Ricardo - such a happy guy-, Orlando andCecilio). Special thanks have to go to Ponce -his attention to detail was top-notch and he remembered our preferences every time.

Drinks
What can I say? The guys at the beach bar were brilliant - keeping an eye on how you were doing for drinks and food without disturbing you. Enrique, Raul, Luis and David were amazing & kept the drinks (fantastic cocktails, especially the margaritas) flowing just how you liked them. I am puzzled by some of the previous comments about slow-service on the beach - never a problem for us & never saw it being a problem for anyone else!

Surroundings
The hotel is so close to the ferry arrival that I agree with others - no point in paying for a transfer if it isn't included in the price of your room. I fell in love with Isla 10yrs ago and although a lot has changed, the Hidalgo still has the same laid-back nightlife and is great for an evening stroll. Never felt unsafe despite hulking around a big camera.
Playa Norte has taken a bit of a battering with recent hurricanes but the beach in front of PA is beautiful white sand and good for a dip. There are buoys & a rope about 10m out but this is because the route for the fishing boats (& car ferry further out) is just in front! This gives something interesting to watch if you want a break from reading or sun-bathing (particularly if a large sailing boat gets stuck on a sand-bank as happened one day we were on the beach). The beach palapas & sun-loungers are well spaced out and even on the few days when the hotel beach was 'busy' we weren't disturbed.

Trips
We went snorkeling with Bart (who is affiliated with the hotel) one day and had a great time, despite an unseasonally cool day! The place we stoped for lunch was brilliant - Bart had ordered a whole fish (don't know what it was but it was at least 70cm/2feet long)chargrilled with onions and a special marinade to have with tacos, rice and salad. It was absolutely delicious!
Roxana at reception also sorted out a trip to Chichen-Itza at short-notice (day before) - don't be alarmed by the brochure cards in the room, those prices are for private (i.e individual) tours only. It was a long day but great to swim in a cenote and tasty lunch (traditional pork stew - mmmm!) before finishing off at Chichen-Itza.

Overall
My husband and I had a fantastic time relaxing on the beach with our cocktails or on the terrace around our own pool. Loved strolling around town in the evenings. Most of all appreciated the warm, friendly staff and everything they did for us to make our stay so memorable. As my husband said, 'Best holiday ever!'. We will be back!

What a great hotel the Aluxes is. The hotel location is excellent, within walking distance of most places, good competitive restaurants and bars all within easy walking distance, shope etc. The hotel room we stayed in, a deluxe suite, was superb, very large areas, lovely bathroom and lounge areas. The view from our balcony was great, sea views. The hotel staff were excellent throught, polite good humoured and gave a feeling of complete trust. The waiters at the main restaurant were excellent, service could not be faulted. All areas, pool, beach service was good. The room service, cleaners etc were a pleasure to have around as they were very friendly, co-operative and excellent at their jobs. Our room maid/cleaner, Jupita Soledad, was lovely, Roberto and Oscar, waiters in the restaurant were a pleasure to have around and reception staff, Moses, gee and the girls were so helpful, and happy in their work making our stay at the Aluxes just a real pleasure. We found our stay to be extremely relaxing in a truly lovely surrounding. If there was one thing that did concern me was the way some people claimed beach beds early in the mornings, leaving their towels etc. and not returning back for long spells. i think that this practice is wrong, but fortunately it only happens at peak times otherwise their are adequate beds for all. I would also like to point out that during our time on the beach one particular American guy collared one of the large beach beds and shared it with friends who were not staying at out hotel. This practice is not as it should be as the facilities are for poeple staying at the hotel only, however this was probably just a one off. The evening restaurants at the hotel are good, good food at a fair price. But if one wants a change of restaurant in the evening then try the italian up in the main street and Rolandi's a bit further up is simply a must, brilliant food, service and atmosphere. I would highly recommend a stay at Isla Mugeres, and Privilege Aulexes, for a cracking vocation.

My husband and I stayed at PA the last few days of Jan 2011 and had a great experience. Check-in was a bit slow as they only had 2 staff members working and 4-5 groups trying to check in/out but it wasn't a terrible inconvenience.

We arrived around noon and our room wasn't ready but they gave us our AI wristbands, stored our bags and we went out for a lovely lunch at Cafe del Mar. During the course of our stay, we had breakfast at Sabor every day and lunch at Cafe del Mar and found the food to be quite good. We were not disappointed in the food or the service. We chose to eat dinner out each night so we never tried Satay.

A few people have commented on the "road" between the hotel and the beach/Cafe del Mar. it really can hardly be called a road. it's sand and infrequently traveled. do NOT let this stop you from booking this hotel.

While we were there, the staff was constantly working to keep the place looking top notch. the pool decks were stained, they beach beds were being refurbished (and they were in decent condition to begin with) and there were always people sweeping sand from the walks. they definitely work to keep this place as nice as possible.

our room (deluxe, ocean view suite on the 2nd floor of building 2) was lovely. different than the layout we were expecting but certainly not worse for it. it's a HUGE room with a lovely view of the pool/ocean.

one thing we found rather amusing is that the room features a sort of kitchenette (sink, cooktop) but not one dish or pot/pan. why have the cooktop if there is nothing to cook with?

our room was cleaned daily to our satisfaction and the minibar was kept fully stocked. we tipped $4 USD (paid in pesos) each day left with a thank you note.

my one and only disappointment is the gym area. it only has 3 machines; treadmill, bike and ski type machine, and free weights. we frequently had to wait/hover to get access to the machines which was a drag. i would like to see them expand this area to include a least 3 treadmills and a couple ellipticals.

as others have mentioned, the pools were not warm but we didn't lie by the pool anyway. why would you when there is a BEAUTIFUL beach right there? also, we saw very few children at PA and found all areas to be quiet and relaxing. oh, and the Free Wifi is a MONSTER bonus for people like my husband and i (who are on our iPhones constantly).

overall, i highly recommend PA. please let me know if you have any further questions.
