“Second time and still great!!”
Reviewed May 29, 2013

We stayed for 6 nights in may and had a great time. We had a suite deluxe and our room and view was great. The room was always clean and out mini bar stocked everyday. The food was good. We like the lunch out at the beach the best. Everyone was nice and eager to help us with anything. Jamie at the front desk always helped us with anything including golf cart rental, local restaurants and places to snorkel. The guys out at the beach were also great. We love coming to privilege aluxes and look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Third floor and up has the best view for the suite deluxe.

This was my fifth stay at PA - and this time I brought a friend with me.....no family, no significant other....and it was the best trip of all. The staff were awesome - it was like returning to family. The presidential suite, perfect.....as usual. The goals were to destress, relax, and get our groove back - both had break ups with significant others - and we wanted to lie in the sun, drink, and hang out with my Isla friends. All goals accomplished! Thank you!!

Room Tip: Presidential Suite all the way!!!!!!!!

March 2013 - Never been before, very welcoming check-in, room was large, clean and modern. Cafe del mar staff were the best only has to wink and the drink were on their way to out beach hut, food was always fresh and tasty and with plenty of security around the private beach never had to worry about our personal belongings while cooling off in the beautiful blue water. A resort everyone should experience and enjoy.....looking forward to going back in Feb 2014 with the children and their partners

Room Tip: Really need to request a beach front room, the view is relaxing while sitting on your balcony

My husband and I stayed at the 124-room Privilege Aluxes for 6 days/5 nights in May, 2013. It was our second visit in seven months. We returned because we enjoyed it so much the first time and we found another good deal online. We have stayed at a total of 35 different all-inclusives (31 in Mexico) so maybe we were a bit more critical this time or arrived with unrealistically high expectations. Even though we once again enjoyed our stay, it was hard to overlook the deficiencies in the Sabor (buffet) Restaurant and the inaccurate information given out by the front desk.

First, the positives:
Beach: The beach is beautiful (fine, white sand) and large. There are plenty of palapas and the lounge chairs are padded and very comfortable. They are generously spaced so there is no sardines-in-a-can feeling. As long as you're at the beach by 10:00 or 11:00 you'll be able to find a palapa. The water entry is only sand, no rocks. There is no snorkeling off the beach because there is no coral, just fine sand. The beach waiters are always there to fill your drink orders. You can even order lunch from your beach chair and the waiters will bring it to you (from the Cafe del Mar a la carte restaurant on the beach). It is a very short walk from the rooms to the beach and the small street/alley that you have to cross to get there has been paved and sidewalks have been installed (a big improvement over our previous visit). Bathrooms are close-by and clean. The beach is closer to the rooms than it is at many other all-inclusives.

Room: The room and the bathroom were large and clean. Furnishings were adequate but sparse (nightstands were tiny). The beds were comfortable (softer than at man all-inclusives) and the pillows were plump. Even thought the minibar has a dated seal closing the door it is included if you book the all-inclusive option. It seems like this could be better explained. The only shower head was a hand-held one and it was mounted at waist height so you had to hold it in one hand to even be able to use it. A hair dryer was provided but there was no hair conditioner, only shampoo, soap, lotion, etc. The clean towels always smelled a little funky (not enough soap, humidity?). We paid a very small amount (approximately $30 total) to upgrade from the deluxe room to the superior room when we booked with jetset.com but in hindsight I would say it wasn't worth it. The upgrade gave us a partial ocean view (nice) and a jacuzzi on the balcony (which we never used). It also made our internet connection worse than when we had a deluxe room on our previous visit because we could not use our ethernet cable to connect (no ethernet port by the desk) and the wifi signal strength was poor in our room (cement walls don't transmit signals well). One way to get a better wifi signal is to go to the lobby and access the internet through the “aluxes reception” rather than the regular “aluxes” network. The computer kept that connection when I returned to the room even though it wasn't shown as a possible connection from the room initially.

Staff: The majority of the staff we encountered were hard-working and very friendly. They seemed to really care about our experience at the hotel.

Bars/Drinks: There are three bars – by the Sabor Restaurant, by the beach/Cafe del Mar Restaurant and by the pool. We only used the beach bar where service was fast and friendly. We were happy with the quality of the drinks (my husband liked the Negra Modelo on tap) but we aren't extremely picky about top shelf brands. Apparently, if you do want top-shelf liquor, you can pay an extra supplement to the all-inclusive price to get the good stuff.

Restaurants/Food: Lunch at the Cafe del Mar was our favorite meal. There were lots of tasty choices (arrachera tacos, pork tacos, chicken nachos, beef and chicken burgers, shrimp cocktail, ice cream) and service was good. Dinner at Cafe del Mar was our second favorite meal. There are two menus (they change every Monday) with some delicious choices (beef tenderloin, hot chicken salad) and service is prompt and friendly. Room service had decent food and was relatively quick (15 minutes one time and 25 minutes another). We always order sandwiches the night before we leave to take with us on the plane. We put them in Ziploc bags (brought from home) and store them in the minibar fridge overnight. Sure beats paying for food at the airport!

Miscellaneous: The hotel is very conveniently located – 500 yards from the UltraMar ferry dock and two short blocks from Hidalgo Street (shopping and restaurants). Wifi is free and there are also two computers in the lobby for guests to use. You can book this hotel as an all-inclusive or as a room with breakfast (European plan). It's fun to rent a golf cart to drive around the island. Check a couple of places for prices; they aren't all the same. There is often a musician or group playing by the Cafe del Mar starting at about 8:30 in the evening. This hotel/resort is very low-key – no throbbing music, beach volleyball, “club” dance, drunken water races, etc. It is also ADULT ORIENTED. There really is nothing for kids older than 2 or 3 (who are happy playing/staying with their parents) to do. The 6-10 year-old kids we saw seemed to be bored to death.

Now, the negatives:
Restaurants (except the Cafe del Mar): The breakfast and dinner buffets at Sabor have very limited choices. At both meals the food in the hot areas was not hot. The hot section nearest the entrance door held room temperature food and the steam table between it and the grill kept food only slightly warmer. At dinner the salad bar did not even have a bowl of greens to start a salad. There also weren't any warm vegetables (broccoli, carrots, corn, etc.) at dinner. Satay Restaurant (Asian) requires reservations and supposedly has a dress code. When we went most of the men were in shorts and collarless T-shirts and many women were in shorts and tank tops so the dress code is obviously not enforced. The restaurant was hot, service was slow and inattentive, and the food was no better than average. Not recommended! We solved these problems at breakfast by ordering omelets or freshly cooked eggs at the grill (thanks, Lupe!) and supplementing those with cold fruit, yogurt and pastries. We ate all our dinners (except for the one try at Sabor and the one try at Satay) at the Cafe del Mar. The all-inclusive option is still worth it in our opinion (if you can get it cheaply enough) just for the drinks and lunch at the beach.

Basic Info (list of restaurants and bars with schedules, beach towel exchange schedule, resort map)/Front Desk Employee Training: When we checked in I asked the front desk employee (who was a trainee) about restaurant schedules. I was given a mix of correct and incorrect information. It would be nice to have a one-page info sheet with pertinent info and a crude resort map. Having something in writing for the front desk employees would at least allow all of them to give the same CORRECT information. Here are some of the schedules: Sabor is open for breakfast (buffet) 7:00-11:00 AM, lunch (a la carte) noon-3:00 PM except on Sundays (closed), and dinner (buffet) 6:00-10:00 PM. Cafe del Mar is open for a la carte dining noon-5:00 PM (lunch) and 6:00-9:50 PM (dinner). You can get beach towels at the spa from 7:30 AM – 6:00 PM.

Not a negative about the hotel, but we used the transfer offered through jetset.com (after I got the price down to what I could book separately) and the shared transfer service provided by Endless Tours was probably the worst we've ever experienced. The representative at the airport was not going to give us our ferry tickets (which were included) until I requested them. He said that they were not included so I had to show him the transfer vouchers to convince him. We made so many non-sequential stops on the way to the ferry dock that a 25 minute trip took almost 1.5 hours. I'll definitely book my own transfers with usa-transfers.com or lomas-travel.com (whichever is cheaper) next time.

We like the laid-back, low-key atmosphere and the beautiful beach so much that we would return to Privilege Aluxes again in spite of the negatives I listed. I just wish the management would take a look at some of the negatives mentioned in reviews and consider fixing them.

Room Tip: Try to get a room that doesn't face the school.

It was our second in 8 months a this fabulous hotel,a quick check in with the the Famous Jesus without any problems ,our room was not ready (it just normal at 12h30) we came to Cafe del mar for a great lunch it was a pleasure to see may favorite waiter Enrique first thing he said to me is :a Gin Tonic ? He knows what is my drink 8 months before ,its a great guy.

We came back to the reception after the lunch and the room was ready,we have a Suite Deluxe #143 with an amazin view of the sea, welcome gift with a sparkling wine with chocolate and fruits kebab,a nice attention,a huge nice swan on the bed another nice touch! The room is really big ,2 tv,a dvd player ,coffee maker and the fridge full everyday, the chambermaid clean the room really early in the morning another good point,a shower a jetted tub inside the bathroom. After 2 days we're upgraded for a Platinum Suite ,rooftop with the pool on the balcony #351,central view of the site ,im sure when they take some pictures from the resort its from this room the view is amazing! The room is like the Deluxe Suite but without the jetted tub, only 2 showers but you have a private pool on the balcony with 2 louge chairs a table and a Palapa, its really intimate.Room service 24hours with a huge selection,steak,kebab,chicken,pasta,burger...always quick and always hot.One day we have ordered the chocolate fontain with a bottle of sparkling wine it was amazing and its not really expensive!
The site is really clean, early in the morning they start cleaning everywhere and all day long, great service at the pool for food or drinks by Ponce and Jesus ( 2 great guys ) they know what is your drink and ask always if you want one more.
The beach ,great waiters there ,Enrique ,Sergio run in the sand all day long to serve the poeple really quickly for drinks or for food. When Enrique pass to see if we need something to drink and we're swimming ,he always bring our favorite drinks and 2 bottle of water in a ice bucket. The sea is really nice and clear there ,always fun to swim there and you're really close from Playa Norte,in the morning there is nobody there.its always really easy to get a good spot on the beach ,on 14 days we're always able to get one the 4 beach beds. The drinks watered down? we started drinking at 10h00 am and at noon it was difficult to speak really well...

Breakfast at Sabor ,its a small buffet but its tasty, and there is always a Mexican corner, mimosas, cappuccino always available.
Lunch :3 choices, Sabor a la carte ,the pool grill and the Cafe del Mar,we only came to the Cafe del Mar ,the selection is good for lunch (a la carte), 3 kinds of chicken wings ,huge cevice, tacos de Cochinita Pibil, big burger, surf and turf kebabs, chicken fajitas, the service is quick and its tasty.
Dinner ; 3 choices Sabor every night is a different theme,we came only on the tacos night and it was really good, tacos of pork, chicken, beef and chorizo.
Cafe del mar :2 different menus and it change on mondays night, both have a good selection and there is also a special menu every night, great grooper, the steak the cooking was not like i ordered but the next one was perfect, coconut schrimp are really good,a good soup in a bread, and do not miss the sunset from the beach!
satay :you need a reservation you can do it by phone from your room or at the reception, its a really nice restaurant and you can eat inside or outside, good selection of sushis ,the fried arrachera one is really good, and the filet mignon teriaki is really good, good tataki, tartare, only one complaint one night capitain saulo was alone for serving all the poeple so that night the service was slow but its not his fault, one night the waiter offer to us a special coffee ,a great show and a tasty coffee thanks again!See you really soon thanks to all the staff for taking care of us,a big thanks from PELICANO!!!!!

We just returned from our second stay at PA and had a wonderful time. We had a third floor suite deluxe in building five with great views of the water. I had written previously asking for building 5 or 6 if possible, so it was wonderful that our wish was accommodated. Being returnees, in our room there was a bottle of champagne cooling in an ice bucket and a lovely plate of fruit kebabs with a pot of chocolate for dipping. A very nice gesture and much appreciated.

Our suite was spacious but a couple of things would definitely improve it such as an extra closet or at least a dresser with some drawers. For a huge space that is largely empty, the closet was remarkably small and had only a few shelves. Also, a couple of hooks in the bathroom for your towels and bathrobe would be welcome. The glass door to the Jacuzzi/shower combination is only half way, leaving the remaining area wide open. This of course means that unless you’re extremely careful, water from the shower spurts all over the floor. Why it is not a complete glass door is mystery. For these reasons I preferred our suite premium last year where we had a separate enclosed shower stall, hooks outside, and two closets. I assumed the suite deluxe and suite premier are the same except for the Jacuzzi on the terrace but that is not the case.

Housekeeping was terrific with creative towel art every day, lots of water in the bathroom for brushing your teeth and minibar restocked with whatever you used the day before.

Pool area was great with good service from Sergio and Ponce at the swim up bar, lots of free loungers and no towel games. One improvement around the pool would be to tone down the volume of the nonstop reggaeton, hip hop/rap, and old disco tunes or better yet, get a larger variety of music. After a week of listening to “This is Love” and “She’s a maniac” you get a little tired of them. The restrooms were spotless, both by the pool and on the beach, so we did not find them to be a problem as did a previous reviewer, nor did we find that there were aggressive vendors, as they stayed outside the roped off area unless someone called them. No one bothered us. The beach was very clean, lots of palapas and loungers, and again, thankfully no towel games. Service was excellent.

We did the all-inclusive since it was so reasonable and had most of our meals at the hotel. Breakfasts at Sabor were very good, and the lunch menu at Café del Mar was much better than last August. Favorites were the steak and shrimp skewers served with guacamole and salsa, and the chicken nachos, which were really good. Dinners on the beach with Jesus Campuzano playing chill jazz could not be beat for ambiance, but unfortunately the food was not quite as good as last time. Everything came with a sauce that was a little too sweet, and I missed some of my favorite dishes from last time, such as the mushroom risotto and the terrific layered eggplant appetizer. The one buffet we checked out at Sabor looked wonderful, with carpaccio, loin of pork, lots of hot dishes, a cheese station, an a fabulous dessert section. Did not eat at Satay, preferring to be on the beach, but we heard it was good.

Service at all the restaurants was super, with a special shout-out to Sergio, Jorge, Jesus, and David! Not mentioning others by name doesn’t mean they were lacking; only that unfortunately we did not learn their names. Everyone was professional, friendly, and efficient.

Overall, PA is a very good value for your money and would definitely return.

I will make this review short and sweet. Lets start with the good. Truly beautiful, excellent staff, quiet, and right across the street from one of the best restaurants I have ever ate at (jax). Crystal clear waters, and the cementary right to the side of the hotel Is even a must see (beautiful). When we got there they upgraded us to an ocean view room even though we only paid for a garden view room.

Now for the only couple negatives I have. I don't really like to complain (but the beds need to be upgraded) For the little bit of time you are in the room, they really are rock hard (well im exaggerating slightly). The only other negative I have is, and I know its all inclusive and everything is already paid for (but the food could have been better.) They only have 3 restaurants. One of the restaurants has a different theme for the night, but the only theme I really enjoyed was the Mexican one (really good) I typically at the beach restaurant, and they didn't really have all that big of a menu.

Seriously was a great vacation, the beach is unbelievable and the hotel pool is real quite and very nice and large. Excellent staff. Oh and 1 tip, if you rent a golf cart or moped, rent it through the hotel and not an off site place. The hotel has insurance provided for you and they don't even need to see your license.

Room Tip: All the rooms are good, and every balcony comes with a Jacuzzi. You cant go wrong with any room you...
