“satisfied from the minute we entered the lobby”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 26, 2013

Returned from Secrets Aura last week.. what a great time and a fabulous resort. Spent alot of time reviewing posts here prior to our trip. Read alot of positive reviews as well as a few nay sayers. Emailed Justine ( social network concierge) with questions and concerns. She assured me a positive stay at Aura... She was right. Couldn't have ask for a better experience.
Starting with our smooth check in. Drinks waiting for us in the lobby. We stayed in building 14, the preferred rooms. Rooms were spacious, clean and well appointed. The beds were comfortable. The air conditioning and hot showers would satisfy the most fussy traveler.
The grounds were beautiful. Well maintained and felt like a walk through paradise. The pool was very clean and just the right temperature.
The array foods from French to seafood were very well presented and tasty. Portions somewhat small, but this allowed for tasting of other entrees and left room for desserts that were as pretty to look at as they were tasty to eat.
The staff were all very friendly. special shout out to Wilberth in the preferred lounge. He was always waiting for us with our " special drink." We enjoyed his company. also to Eugenia the beach waitstaff. Although she appeared to be the only waitress on the beach and the pool area a couple of days. She did an amazing job. Bringing drinks and food promtly and taking away dishes as soon as we were finished. And she did all of this with a smile.
Although this property is still undergoing change, upgrading and rebranding... you would never know it. Construction was quiet and discreetI can only imagine the positive changes that will continue to take place over the next months or year. This being said... I will definitely return .

Anyone thinking about booking, take the leap... you will not be disappointed. And I would be happy to answer questions re: our trip and stay at Secrets Aura.
Thank you again Seacz EConcierge Justine Pyne you made a surprise birthday/ anniversary one to remember.

My husband and I, along with another couple, stayed at Secrets Aura April 13-20. We travel frequently throughout Mexico (Cancun, Riviera Maya, Playa, and Cozumel) so this resort is being compared to others in the area where we have previously stayed. My husband and I love the island of Cozumel. It's small and very safe with the added bonus of flying directly into the Cozumel airport. This resort wasn't our personal favorite, but it’s still a decent resort. The property is very clean, the resort staff are very friendly, and the view is spectacular. Snorkeling by the pier is okay, but if you want really great snorkeling I suggest you plan an excursion on the island. We went deep sea fishing one day and caught a large white marlin! Very neat experience! We also took the Jeep tour around the island and enjoyed the snorkeling, tequila tour, and lighthouse visit. It was a long and exhausting day but very cool to see the entire island. The beaches on the other side of the island are breathtaking!

Service at the resort is sporadic at best. There is only one bartender working in each location, so at times we waited quite a while for our beverages. The bartenders were not overly friendly and would often scowl or look unhappy when we tried to talk to them. We found that the service in the restaurants was a bit better, and our only complaint was the Mexican restaurant at Sunscape/Sabor called El Patio. We waited and waited for our meal and the wait staff seemed flustered. My husband also got sick after eating at El Patio and missed almost two days of our vacation due to stomach issues. The food quality wasn’t the best that we have had compared to other resorts. That being said it was very nice not having to worry about reservations for dinner. Drinks at the resort were great! I loved that the resort offered top shelf liquor which you don’t find at many AI resorts!

The pools and resort amenities were good. We enjoyed our afternoons at the swim up bar and met many wonderful people from all over the US. Beach volleyball was one of my favorite afternoon activities. We also spent an afternoon shopping in town and enjoyed a wonderful lunch at Casa Denis. It was my fourth time to Casa Denis and I highly recommend this family-friendly restaurant. They will take great care of you and the food is delicious!!

Resort staffs were friendly but they didn’t go out of their way to get to know our group as other reviews have mentioned. Housekeeping was adequate, but again, not the best we have had. It took over three days for them to sweep the sand off our floor and after a couple of days I had to leave a note for them to change our bed linens. We would often see dirty dishes and glasses left in the hallway; a treat for all the black birds at the resort!

Even with our ups and downs, we had a wonderful time on the island. Vacation is what you make of it and even though this resort wasn’t top notch in my mind, it’s still a nice place to stay. A special thank you to all the wonderful people we met from Iowa, Oklahoma, Texas, and Boston! You all made our vacation so much fun!! I don’t think I would be able to convince my husband to return to this resort but I would still recommend Secrets Aura to others.

We stayed at the Aura in September 2012. The staff was generally very good. We reserved a swim-up suite and were glad that we did. It was really neat to step out of our room and into the pool. Careful though, if the the maid comes while your in the pool, she may inadvertently lock you out. Best to keep your key card on you. Mostly we went to dive, and the onsite dive shop was great. We loved Mateo, our dive instructor. The Tuesday night Fire-Show at the neighbor resort was pretty neat. Our biggest issue was with the food. The food at Aura was passable, at best. The selection was always the same and, after a week, tired. We ate a few times at the resort next door, but because it was the low season, they stopped having the buffet there. We never did find the cafe style restaurant there. We did eat at Roberto's, the Italian restaurant and enjoyed it very much. The resort is generally very quiet, which is nice. But, it is definitely a couples resort. We were singles and were pretty much alone. The beach was small and the entrance into the water was very rocky. We didn't spend as much time in the ocean as we would have liked for this reason. This resort is also pretty far from town. All in all, we had a good time, but we probably would not return to this resort.

Room Tip: If you're going here, get a swim up room.

My husband and I stayed at Secrets Aura the week of April 5-12. This was our 9th visit to a Secrets property. We've stayed at Secrets Maroma, Silversands(3 times), The Vine (2 times),Capri, and Secrets St. James in Jamaica. As you can tell we love the Secrets chain. Like everyone else, upon reading mixed reviews for the resort we weren't sure what to expect. But we arrived with an open mind and weren't disappointed.

Secrets Aura is a "Quaint" property. The grounds are beautiful with lush gardens. The property is truly a "Beachside" resort. Two of their restaurants are right on the beach. There is plenty of action every morning on the pier at the resort. Dive boats arrive, boats to take you snorkelling. Even catamaran's. Always something to see while you are enjoying your breakfast.

The staff is very attentive and are eager to please. By the second day the staff knows you by name. They always smile and say hello. Because the resort is so small you actually feel like a person and not just a number to the staff. Danial Cazarin(front desk manager) makes sure of that. Everyone at the resort knows how to speak English pretty well. Even the maids. All of the times that we have been to Mexico never have the maids been able to speak a word of English. But thanks to Justine's English lessons, they are able to speak very well.

We stayed in an ocean view swim up room which was very nice and comfortable. The air worked great and the bar was replenished everyday. We had turn down service every night. The bed was very comfortable.

The food is very good. The only improvement would be to have more of a selection on the menus to bring it up to "Secret" standards. We didn't have any problem with wait times at any of the restaurants for any of the meals. Our orders came out exactly what we ordered and were always hot. We did notice that at all of the restaurants at all meal times, the Captain would help out by taking orders as well as delivering orders. Waldo who is Captain at Bordeux also would come over at Lunch to the beachside restaurants and help over there. We talked to a couple that told us that Waldo makes the "best marguaritas". This man does it all and always with a smile. He is a very important asset to this resort. Another Captain that worked very hard was Roger. A man of few words but really helped his team out. I also have to mention Angel. He is one of the best waiters at windows. He is so friendly and very professional all at the same time. I told my husband that I wanted to take Angel home with us.

We are pool people so I can only comment about our waitress Arelly. She worked very hard never stopping. One day she brought us an order of nachos saying that we looked hungry. She was right! They were very good.

Marco, The General Manager is very personable. He is out every day wandering through the resort talking to the guests and making sure everything is just right for you. We talked to him every day. We would tell him what aspects of the resort we really liked. And he would tell us " Don't tell me what you like about the resort, tell me what needs to be improved". What more could you ask for. With Marco running the resort it's sure to be a Secrets Favourite in no time!

Just one more thing that I would like to comment on. Each Secrets resort is very different and has their own attributes that make each one special. You can not compare them to each other. It isn't fair to the properties. Anyone thinking of going to this resort should. With a little more time it will become "Secrets Diamond in the Rough"!

Carole and Ernie

Had a fabulous stay with my husband for our 15th Anniversary. This was our first time here and we would definately go back. Getting there from the airport was an easy ride from the airport and they made check in very welcoming with champagne in the open air lobby and easy. We stayed in a Jr. Suite in the back with a pool view and it was great! The room itself was clean and updated, very comfortable (only issue was a slow draining shower -room 4124). The balcony looked out at the pool but was partially private by the palm trees--my favorite part of the room was a hammock on the balacony. It was a little bit of a walk to the beach, but personally I was glad for it b/c I need to have some moving throughout the week. Pools were fun--the water slides were a good time (but do avoid the one with the 3 in one--several people while I was there went too fast and either almost flew out or did). Water in the pools were great, they had volleyball going a few times and plenty of chairs and towels. I wish the pool bar had stayed open a little later than it did, but over all had fun hanging out with others at the pool.
Food was excellent everywhere we ate! As mentioned in other post the portions were small, but in the States our portions really have gotten out of control so here they as they really should be. We would order an appetizer each, salad/soup and a main dish and were always plenty full without overeating like we would at a buffet. Windows was our favorite right on the beach--just beautiful, we ate breakfast there everyday, dinner a few times and lunch once. I had a beef tenderloin steak the was the best!! It was so tender you could easily cut with a butter knife. Oceana was nice, a little more casual, also on the beach. We got snacks/lunch once at the Barside grill --also good--go for the nachos! I think we got the best service at Bordeux, which was also excellent, they have some different foods to try there, scallops were excellent and the duck was surprisingly very good. We never went over to eat at the other resort but did also call room service once and again good food.
We did the excursion for snorkeling--it was a fantastic trip and very reasonably prices, would definately recommend it. Other than that we hung out on the beach and by the pool which was relaxing and fun to meet other couples. At night the Sky Bar is open, which was fun when they had karaoke or a dj, usually met up with new friends and visited. It closed at 11, which was a bit early, but we discovered a dance bar at the adjoining resort that was open til midnight. It is pretty quiet at night, which I am not complaining about. Drinks were good at all bars, Juan at Rendevouz was the best if you ask me--for the most part they can make whatever you would like.
All of the staff were very pleasant we were almost always greeted in passing.
We had a fabulous time, I would definately recommend and definately consider going back! Go and have a great time!

This resourt is in transition and most is very out dated. You get there and you don't get the room you reserved and check in is a disaster you won't get in your room till late in the evening. I reserved an ocean view and when I got there was put in a room on the back of the property that had no view and haven't been updated sense the 80s, very hard bed old furniture. I would not stay there again.

Firstly I'll qualify my review with this: my husband and I only go to Cozumel for the diving and we like to stay close to the reefs to avoid long boat rides. We're not lay around the pool or beach all day people, and we don't care about nightly hosted events, discos, bingo, water aerobics, etc. I've been going to Cozumel since the 80s. I'm in my 50s, very active, enjoy good food, good wine, and a bit of lively post-dive activity. We HATE buffets, and prefer all-adult properties. We don't travel in packs... i.e.: usually it's just me and my husband, and we travel *a lot* both for pleasure and for business. I've stayed at a few in-town hotels: La Ceiba, Casa Del Mar, etc.; Aura was my first stay at an all-inclusive, all-adult, south end hotel, and this was our 4th stay there. We've seen Aura it through different ownerships, and we've had no problem with any of them. We do keep our expectations in line with where we're going... a small, Mexican island. I was admittedly a bit concerned when I started seeing all the negative reviews about the Secrets takeover, but I'm pleased to report that we had another great stay.

In the past we've always booked through Expedia, and always got swim-up rooms on the Aura side of the property (which by the way are great!). We booked before the changeover started and because we got such a good rate I was worried we'd get shafted on our room so I contacted Secrets to see exactly what to expect. Contact info follows...

As suspected, they had us in the old Sabor side, so, I request an upgrade to the Aura side. Unfortunately, it was completely booked, so I requested an upgraded room on the Sabor side. Of course they wouldn't guarantee it. So we were pleasantly surprised when we arrived to find that 1) they had my request in the system and 2) we'd been upgraded to a swim-up room on the old Sabor side (yes, they too have swim up rooms too, AND SIDE HAS POOL SLIDES - whoohoo). This actually turned out great for us. We were in room 4415. The old Sabor side is much more lively than the original Aura side and the pool is much warmer. We got up each a.m., got a cappuccino and croissant from the coffee shop, walked to the dock and got on the boat and off we went. Cappuccino wasn't the greatest in the world, but it was decent enough. After diving we usually frolicked in the pool and socialized a while before entering into a dive-induced coma for a few hours before dinner.

When we arrived, we waited maybe 20 minutes to check in (yes, we got our glasses of Champagne). After looking over the room, and as mentioned earlier, being very pleased with it (no bathtub, just shower but who cares?), we went on a recon mission. We kindly, but firmly dismissed the "Preferred Club" greeter who was on us like ticks on a hound dog as we walked out of our room. Said hello to the resident iguanas who lived right outside room. Looked over the menus at the different restaurants around both Aura and Sunscape.

In summary (and keep in mind that Aura people can eat at ALL restaurants, whereas Sunscape people can only eat at Sunscape restaurants) ... with regard to the restaurants and my comment about hating buffets... on the Sunscape side, we *did not* like the looks of the Market Cafe (curiously there were a few kids there, but I read that Sunscape wasn't allowing kids until June -- perhaps I read wrong?). Truthfully, we didn't eat at any of the Sunscape side restaurants. PortoFino had a great view, but we weren't excited by the menu, so I can't speak to the quality. We did eat at Bordeaux, Oceania, Windows and the Beach Bar several times. We loved the leisurely European style of serving food in stages, and loved the small portions (especially knowing I could order anything I wanted several times -- it was like having tapas!). My biggest complaint is the lack of good house wine. We were *forced* to buy good bottles of wine (oh darn she says sarcastically). Service was *always* good, but then we don't like to rush through any meal. Of course there's plenty of top-shelf alcohol available - we went through our fair share of Barcardi and Coke, and my husband had a few fancy pants drinks which were quite good (especially the Blue Hawaiian). We had room service once -- it was fast and good.

Other stuff: Housekeeping service was about average. Never got a turndown service (who cares?). No hair conditioner - I mention this only because I must have conditioner. Mini 'frig was stocked daily plus I asked for extra sparkling water. WiFi was great. No problem getting a pool chair or towel at 2 in the afternoon. Liked that they had a ping-pong table and lots of water volleyball (don't have that stuff on the original Aura side). Staff were all very kind (with or without tips). Sky Bar is OK, but it needs to be jazzed up a bit (and those hot tubs *are not* hot). Sunscape side is actually quite nice (if only they had better restaurants). Cute ocean front rooms. Nice pools. We went to Karaoke one night - husband sang one song - sounded awful - I blame it on the acoustics. You can rent kayaks, etc. on the property. I think Dive Paradise has a hut on the property, but we *always* go with Scuba with Alison - she's awesome. Even though we don't lay on the beach, it's lovely and clean. Pools areas are lovely and clean as well. Didn't use the exercise facility. Had a massage last year which was very nice. Also walked down the beach and got my hair braided (very helpful when diving).

There are a few few bars/restaurants a short walk down the beach (south) if one gets tired of hanging around the property; other than that it's a cab ride into town. We don't shop or do any other excursions whilst in Cozumel - just diving. But I've heard good things about Tulum.

Hmmmm... maybe I should have said it sucked to keep Secrets and secret.

Room Tip: 4415 was very nice. Swim up rooms are great. Old Sabor side is more lively.

Dear jirwin,

Thank you for taking the time to write your comments on TripAdvisor about your stay with us. Your remarks are very much appreciated as they help us to improve our service, and our product.

We were especially pleased to learn that as returning guests to Aura you had enjoyed all aspects of our service. We noted that you particularly enjoyed your upgrade on arrival, swim up room, and seemed to have had a fantastic vacation overall. It is certainly with a great deal of pride that we read your positive comments. We noted your comments about our service, cleanliness of our property, delicious food and beverage and pool facilities. It was also delightful to hear that you enjoyed diving in Cozumel.

Your comments regarding turn down service and conditioner being placed in the rooms, have been noted and we will be looking into how we can improve this service. It was unfortunate that you did not enjoy the entertainment in the Sky Bar as much but it is hoped that when next you return in the near future to dive you will enjoy more festivities.

We hope to have the honor of welcoming you back to Secrets Aura Cozumel, allowing us the opportunity of providing you a truly wonderful and memorable experience again in the near future.

Warm regards,

Justine Pyne
