“Secrets has destroyed a previously excellent resort.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed January 22, 2013

We stayed at the Aura before it was a Secrets property. We came back nine months later (after Secrets had taken over) to find not nearly as nice of a resort.

Food & Drink:
They used to serve top shelf liquor. No longer.
They used to have several nice tequilas, they have dropped that number in half.
Previously the food was consistently excellent. Now the food is mediocre. Rubbery overcooked shrimp, zero presentation. The staff was overworked. Dinner took nearly three hours on our last night. Several couple gave up due to the long wait. Another couple left in the middle of dinner when they were served inedible appetizers.

Rooms:
The aura has a one-star-lower neighbor property called Sabor. Guests can go to the Sabor for drinks or dinner, but the property is not nearly as nice as the Aura. Secrets annexed a portion of the old Sabor and are now calling it Aura. Yes - you pay for a 4 star but get a 3 star. The room was depressing and not even close to the quality we experienced on the first trip. We paid extra to book a swim-up ocean view suite. We were given an old Sabor standard room not close to the ocean. The toilet ran, the shower dripped, and the room was way out of date. The staff moved us to a "real" Aura room, but we didn't get the swim up suite we paid for.

Up Selling /Bait and Switch:
Be prepared for $200 worth of unusable discounts on the spa. Read the fine print. No discount really. Pure bait and switch. Also be prepared for a sales pitch to join their vacation club ($30,000).

Staff:
Excellent, hospitable and overworked.

Overall:
Last year we couldn't wait to come back to the Aura. Now I will never come back. In fact, I will never visit a Secrets property in the future. I've seen what they did to a great resort and I want nothing to do with that company. Secrets is a despicable company. I feel bad for the excellent staff.
TripAdvisor had them as one of the top rated resorts last year. Now they are 40 out of 58. My advice - stay away.

Room Tip: Stay at another resort.

This place was recommended to me by 2 seperate travel agents. I am now going back to my travel agent and Delta Vacations for a refund. Food is not only cold, but not good. The service is the worst i have ever experienced. waited as much as 1 1/2 hours just to get lunch on three seperate days. No wait staff at the pool or beach. The menu at the 3 restaruants have 3 main dish options and that is it. the menu was not changed the entire 6 days we were there(wife got very ill after eating the French food). Had a roof top suite with private pool, complained 5 days to have the pool cleaned due to the hair, dead skin, and oil floating in it, not to mention the 2 inch ring of filth around the edge, it was never cleaned. The housecleaning staff even came in our room at 10:30 at night for turn down service, after we had been in bed over an hour! (had to turn in early, since this resort has absolutley NO entertainment). If this is what a Secrets Resort is all about, they will never get another dollar of my money. The location and grounds are nice, but that is the ONLY thing this place has that is positive. I would recommend anyone looking for a resort, to save about $2000.00 a week and stay in a comparable resort in Cancun.

1) if you like to eat salted frozen food then get ready to be bloated on the worst food possible.

2) place smells like a poo

3) staff tries hard. Secrerts doesn't give them the tools they need to be a 4 star

4) do you like time shares? Well this place will shove it down your throat. It's almost like water boarding.

5) pools are cold....very cold

6) snorkeling is amazing

7) the sabor is not secrets but they try to tell you it's Secrerts. Sabor is the equivalent to a 1star motel with nice palm trees.

Stayed 1/11 - 1/18/13. We booked a Junior Suite, Pool view room. These rooms are the old Sabor preferred section in the back of the resort. They are located over the activities pool, which closes at 10:00, so doesn't interfere with sleep. The rooms were nice - people complain about them not being 5 star, but this is Mexico not the US. Bed was comfortable and room was clean. Fridge was stocked daily and if you needed more, they brought it for you.

Food was very good. The time it took to get food was the major complaint. Let me be clear, this wasn't due to the wait staff - they were very effecient, it was due to the kitchen staff not being able to keep up. Breakfast at Windows took over an hour one day. We did learn lunch can and will be brought to you at the beach and by the main pool by the bar waiter of the day, just ask. Room service is also a good option. Be sure to pick up the activities sheet daily - Tuesday was Beach party night and Friday was Mexican Fiesta - dinner on the beach.

The main pool is very low-key, if you want a party place, this resort isn't for you. The activities pool is a bit more lively, however the swim-up bar is in the shade all day. The Skybar is a great place to watch the sunset - 2 hot-tubs or I will say warm tubs.. Different nightly activity in this bar as well. Great selection of top-shelf liquor.

Sunsets are fantastic!!!

Secrets Aura Grand Cozumel
We stayed from Jan 10 - Jan 16th.
We looked at all of the reviews on this resort leading up to our trip and after reading them we were cautiously optimistic before we left. Hopefully this review will be a little more insightful than many of the ones we looked at prior to our departure.
1st off you need to understand that last December 15 this resort became Secrets Aura, prior to that it was two different resorts of different "class" levels (Sabor being the lesser of the two) in relatively close proximity to each other.

Construction
We were concerned of ongoing construction prior to our arrival but I'm happy to report that although they are still making upgrades to the properties, the major repairs appear to have already been completed. Other reviews discuss the prior construction & property changes. The smaller scale construction that we witnessed was installing ceiling fans in an outdoor waiting area by one of the restaurants or something on a similar scale.
Rooms
The room we had was in the newly renovated Secrets Aura (old Sabor VIP) section, poolside view. We didn’t expect an ocean facing room and we knew this going into it. We could still see the ocean from our patio but I’m not sure that all of these rooms would offer that. Many reviews talk about no hot water but we never had an issue and if it was we would’ve discovered it and I would’ve written about it. I will say that our room (very nice) did have a couple of minor flaws upon arrival. Our mini fridge ice box had so much ice around it the whole fridge door wouldn’t shut (we placed it on the patio and 30 minutes later it was defrosted). Our phone didn’t work (no calls to room service, etc) and we had a dresser door fall off the dresser our 2nd day in. I mentioned the phone and door to the front desk in the morning and later that afternoon the door was fixed and they must’ve noticed the fridge because they replaced that also. Our phone was never repaired during our stay (not a big deal for us but thought you should know). Our air conditioner unit was new and worked fantastic, also very quiet. Our mini fridge was refilled daily like clockwork.
Maid Service
After our 1st night we had a full day of activities planned, upon returning to the room around 4pm we noticed that the maid hadn’t come through yet. We thought this was late but didn’t say anything. After dinner we came back to the room and it still wasn’t cleaned. We were both tired and just jumped back into bed. I forgot to mention anything to the front desk in the morning about it but when we returned from our 2nd day’s activities the maid had cleaned and everything was great from that point on. I believe that 1st day was simply an oversight but at a premier resort that shouldn’t have happened.
Meals & Dining
Gentlemen, long pants and closed shoes are required at this resort at all the dining in restaurants so plan accordingly. All of the restaurants were open during our stay and the food was exceptional. Every meal from breakfast had multiple “menu” options from breakfast to dinner and my partner and I enjoyed every meal we had. I will mention that meals in this resort aren’t rushed. You’ll read about this in other reviews. This isn’t because the service is slow, it’s the intent of the resort to have couples relax and enjoy each other’s company and conversation over a fine meal. This took some getting used to but was only an issue in the morning as we were divers and had a boat to catch. The good news is that after I explained to the waiter our dilemma he tried his best to get our orders in early and our food to us quickly. I will also mention that the portions served are much smaller than most Americans are used to. You can ask to double or triple your portion size if you like and it’s not frowned upon by anyone.
Drinks
Top shelf liquors and as stiff as you’d like them to be. The beer is Dos Equis and your choices of wine are of the Mexican Varity. You do have the option of choosing from a wine list for an additional fee.
Tipping
Although this is an all inclusive resort you’ll find that tipping is welcomed and will get you better/faster service.
In Conclusion
This is a very nice resort with a beautiful beach front. The food was amazing and the staff were very gracious to us (we tipped). Many of the guests were SCUBA Divers and you can be picked up off the pier by your dive operator if you choose to. The rooms and patios aren’t diver friendly (cleaning gear, etc) but we managed. We weren’t bothered about a pier surcharge. Bracelets aren’t required which I thought was a plus. Not all of the rooms are standard; some had hammocks while others didn’t. Some of the swim-up rooms had beds on the patio while others didn’t. It seemed like there wasn’t any standardization but it was still good. You can tell they are going through growing pains by the “little things” that are missed here and there but all in all we had a great time.
We never used the Spa.
We would go back but we’ll give them some time to fine tune everything.

When we first arrived, we were greeted with a Champange cocktail which was a great kick off to the trip. It also make me want a Champange cocktail throughout the trip. I told my husband that I wanted champange the next day. He said that they wouldn't open a bottle just for me. Guess what!? They did, I couldn't believe it.

I am very confused by the negative comments about the resort, because everything was great. It did take up to an hour and a half to eat, but I do believe that is very typical. Order an appetizer, a few glasses of wine and enjoy your company! Don't worry about when the food is going to arrive because you are on vacation after all! Stress free!

One the first day we arrived, they gave us a schedule of when the resturants were open. We mapped out where we were going to eat each day so we could try all of the resturants! A fe of the resturants were only open one or two nights while we were there!

One tip that I recommend is writing, in spanish, a note for the housekeeper for more beer and water with a few bucks underneth of the note. You will be stocked up in your mini fridge in the room! Worth the few bucks for us!

I highly recommend renting a car and taking a trip around the island. Hands down, it was the best part of the trip. Make sure you stop at all the little bars along the way. You can rent a car right on the resort. DO NOT rent something at the airport, it is a trap for a timeshare.

We did have an ocean view room which was amazing, I wish we would have spent a few extra bucks and got the swim up rooms. We will be doing that the next time we are there.

Room Tip: Like I said before, spend the extra money for a swim up room!
