We stayed at the Royal Club for a week in mid January, reading the reviews before we arrived I was a little nervous, however we had a fantastic week. I had no problems with food, we ate at the buffet and thought it very good, they even had a mimosa station for breakfast and a wide variety of foods and we also ate in the restraunt in the Royal Club a lot and thought that was the best, for breakfast before your meal even arrived you get served pastries and lots of toast, it was all fresh baked and the lunches were great, they served really nice wine there too as well as any kind of drink you want. We had five a la carte meals that were all wonderful and the service was execptional, the waiters at this resort work very hard and we did not have to wait long for anything. We enjoyed the relaxation pool most days as it was quiet and the bar tender there was amazing. He came around several times in a day for drink orders and by day two he knew what we liked to drink and we never had to ask for refills, sometimes he just brought them over when our drinks were getting low. The property was lovely, I did not think it was getting run down at all, the rooms were very clean and the whole hotel was clean. The beach was the best. this hotel has a wonderful beach and a bar very close to the beach, waiters were also coming around to take drink orders on the beach. We had no problems at all with the timeshare people, we only had to say no thanks once at there was no pushy people bugging us. We booked through air Canada and there was a representative there in the morning and afternoon, we never had any trouble with seeing him to book tours and the concierge at the royal club was great, every staff member was very friendly and very efficant. I would definatley recommend this hotel and I would definatly go back, we had a great stay and no complaints.

We just returned from a week here. We were in the Royal Club, on the recommendation of previous reviews, and I heartily endorse this option if you can take it.

The facility is in a beautiful setting, and the beach is absolutely fantastic. Our room was one of the top floor suites, and at a little over 900 sq ft seemed the height of luxury for the two of us.

The staff there are really top notch, and the level of service was the best I've enjoyed in my (admittedly limited) experience. As an example, we had a problem with our massage, and it was sorted out in a timely fashion to our satisfaction.

At only 250 or so rooms, this is not an especially large facility, which lends itself to an intimacy that you don't get at the larger mega-resorts.

The bar did have a good selection of top shelf liquor, which came as a pleasant surprise.

Although I do recommend this as a place to stay, I do have a few cautions:

1) The property is getting a little on the beat up side. I think that this is an unavoidable feature of properties in a hurricane zone. If there isn't a major refurbishment in the next 2-3 years, this place will go downhill

2) The vacation club guys. Just say no, and walk away, and you'll enjoy your stay that much more.

3) Brace your liver. Free Pours are coming.

4) The food was okay, but nothing that knocks your socks off. Arguably, the lunch buffet down on the beach is the best meal of the day (that view just can not be beat)

None of those quibbles really takes away from what a good stay we had here.

Great place for a relaxing weekend. We read a lot of reviews before coming here so we were prepared for a few downsides. However, we were pleasantly surprised with everything.

Prior to arrival (one week) I emailed the hotel and ask to make sure we got a king size bed. They took care of it no problem. Room (deluxe) was just fine for us. The rooms are located in a secluded forest that contains all kinds of birds, iquanas, lizards, racoons, coatimundi, and cute little wild pigs scampering about.

When we arrived we made it clear up front that we did not want a free gift, tour or to endure a sales pitch. It worked, they never said a word to us. Just nip it in the bud when you get there and you'll be fine.

Lots of choices for eating, you can pretty much eat from morning until midnight at the various restaurants and buffets. Two of the nicer restaurants require reservations, make them when you first get here. You can't make a reservation until you arrive at the resort. Also, there's a place called Alberto's 1/2 mile up the beach that specializes in fresh lobsters. They are a bit pricey ($38 - $60) depending on the size. But you are served right on the beach with tiki lamps which was awesome. You can take a free cab back or simply walk back.

The staff was excellent. We interacted with about 30 different people and they were all very nice and helpful. There's was one guy in the Mexican restaurant that was kinda grumpy but that's it.

Nice beaches and crystal clear blue water. There are plenty of beach chairs but we would recommend getting there early to get a good spot. Lots to do on the beach, snorkeling, games, activities, bars, kayaking, etc. Some of these things require extra money.

Room Tip: Building 16 is very convenient to everything and very secluded.

This was our 5th consecutive year visiting the Occidental Grand and we wouldn’t hesitate to return again.

The first word I can think of to describe our visits to the Royal Club has been consistency and, in our opinion, much of this can be attributed to the Manager, Nelly Baas. She is very prompt and helpful in responding to any emails in advance of arrival and instrumental in assuring anything you need is available during our stay. Her pleasant manner make our visits to the Royal Club a little bit like “coming home” and we honestly couldn’t imagine a visit without seeing her smiling face.
All of the positive points made in my previous reviews still hold true and that’s one of the things that keep drawing us back…….no disappointment! The resort grounds and facilities, the beach, the staff ; all great.

We had breakfast once at La Posada buffet and it was fine but a bit busy and noisy.
Many of our lunches were at the Beach Buffet to take advantage of the amazing views and always found the food to be very good, especially the fish.
We had dinners at the Sonora Grill and Los Olivos and enjoyed our meals at both.
Otherwise, we took full advantage of the Royal Club and had most of our meals at La Carreta. Not only were the meals outstanding, but the service we received from Tomas and Adrian was excellent. They consistently went “over and above” to serve us and, again, make us feel at home!

During all of our previous visits, we had used Dive Palancar, the on-site dive shop. However, the day we arrived was their last day at the resort and Pro Dive moved in to set up shop during our stay. While we missed seeing the usual faces from Dive Palancar, Pro Dive seems to be setting up a very professional operation at the resort.

The only other thing that seemed different during this stay was what seemed to be an increase in time-share presence. We’ve always seen them around the resort but we noticed many more “tours” being conducted this year than ever before. While it had no negative impact on our stay (they haven’t bothered us since our first year there and a firm “No Gracias”), the increased activity around the resort was certainly noticeable to us.

No need to go into further detail about everything I’ve covered before in previous reviews, it all still stands and this resort continues to be our favourite. Mainly due to the outstanding staff!

We completely enjoyed yet another excellent visit to the Royal Club and would certainly not hesitate to recommend it to anyone.

Room Tip: The Royal Club is well worth the upgrade

This place sucks the big one. Whatever you do, do not go to the free gifts, tickets, whatever they offer for free 90 minute presentation. This presentation can take hours. Stay away from these people trying to get u to buy into their vacation club. It is a total rip off. You can book your own vacations for way less. They use strong armed tactics. Don't fall for their lies. Before u even book this place, look at the reviews and how many people have fallen for this vacation package and how sorry they are now. Stay away from their free drinks. Don't even Go. Not just one salesman attacks you but four or five. The place is ordinary and an $18 dollar one way to were the action is, downtown, all the shops, Jimmy Buffet Restaurant, all the restaurants and-all the fun. Their food is awful, same with the drinks and the beds r hard.

We are just wrapping up a 4 night stay at the Royal Club and it has been a delightful vacation! The weather has not cooperated (rainy) and this has led to some flooding and general waterlogged facilities but we can roll with that pretty easily.

We came here to dive and the onsite dive shop and distance to the dock cannot be beat. It is just really easy. I have reviewed Dive Palancar separately so I will just note here that they are great.

The Royal Club amenities are nice but I can argue that the additional price is not worth the extra cost. I sat at the club pool once and ate at the club restaurant twice. But we could easily have been happy with the main resorts amenities just as well.

The buffet was delicious for breakfast (made to order omelets were great) and the beach club for delicious was convenient for in between dives. All of the a la carte restaurants were very good but Los Olivos was our favorite- Laura is an absolute superstar and took the best care of us!

The club concierge was hit or miss- Nelly was super, Ricardo not so much. It would be nice if it appeared he gave a s?%* about the job he was doing- I never got that impression. Unfortunately he was who we interacted with the most.

We will definitely return here to dive and staying at the Grand Occidental would be a no-brainer.

We have just returned from our seventh consecutive trip to the Occidental Grand Cozumel and this is our second stay at the Royal Club. The staff at the Occidental are outstanding and have always gone above and beyond to make are stays enjoyable. It is a joy to see the same staff members at the Occidental year after year. The food and service at the RC restaurant was excellent. The daily breakfast is severed to order with fast service to allow us to easily make our scheduled early morning dive trips. We enjoyed Los Olivos and the Sonora Grill as well during our stay. The three restaurants provided a great variety in menu choices. Lunches were at the Beach Club and the La Posada where the buffets menu changed daily but always included a great and abundant choices. We found the soups to be outstanding. I am embarrassed to report that I have gained 5 pounds during our week stray.
The ground of the resort have never been prettier. We saw work crews quieting performing maintenance to the resort rooms daily during our stay. This diligence to upkeep highlights why the rooms have always been in such good repair. We enjoyed four days of diving on this trip and the ease of access to the reefs as always been a great influence on our continued choice to stay at the Occidental Grand.
