We ended up tagging along with friends for this excursion and are so glad we did! I was a bit nervous at first but once i got underwater everything was great! The guides tell you exactly what to do and are down there with you getting all sorts of fish for you to hold. The scooters were extremely easy to drive. We had a great time!

We booked this excursion through Island Marketing, Ltd (http://cozumelcruiseexcursions.com/). We were on a cruise and the cruise ship did not offer this as an excusion (and it they did it would be a lot more expensive). The booking was very easy and when we had questions before we booked, they were quick to respond.

The location of the mini-subs is Hotel Cozumel and Resort which is very nice, and a short distance from the cruise ship dock for the NCL (there are other cruise ports on the island, so it may be further from them.) You can rent a locker from the hotel for $3 (must leave a $20 deposit which is returned). There are outdoor showers and a restroom for changing. There is also a nice buffet lunch for $11.

The mini-sub (really an underwater scooter) itself was an interesting experience, but I don't think snorkelers or divers would enjoy it. The vision out of the "helmet" is quite distorted, as another reviewer mentioned. The people who are running this seem extremely safety conscious. The currents were very strong so we couldn't go off on our own. As soon as they unhooked us from the safety line, we all started drifting away and the scuba divers who were down with us had to "round us up" and hook us back up to the safety line. The motors just weren't strong enough to deal with the current.

Even if you can't swim, as long as you don't mind getting your face in the water for the 2-3 seconds it takes you to get on the scooter, you should be OK.

All the people who we encountered were nice, professional, and, like I said, safety conscious.
They do take pictures of you during the "dive" and offer you a $30 CD with movies and photos after the dive. They also took pictures of me with my own underwater camera, so if you have one you can take your own pics and not buy their pics (we did both). The only complaint I'd have is they feed the fish to get them to come around while you are in the water. I understand why they do it, but it doesn't seem like they should do that - I actually think many divers/snorklers do the same thing. They know they have paying customers and they want them to see as much as possible.

We enjoyed doing this as something different to do and to get away from the crowds - it was an enjoyable few hours.

Maybe it was slow, but the couple before us went alone, and so did we. We were accompanied by a guide and a photographer, both in SCUBA.

The mini-subs are surprisingly comfortable, easy to operate, and relatively slow.

They brought fish ober to eat out of our hands (with bread), and other sea life for us to hold. We were underwater for about half an hour (there was a short orientation beforehand) and we thoroughly enjoyed it.

Nothing was fancy, but everything worked, staff were excellent, and the attarction delivered.

Leave a nice tip.

Apparently they pitch this on cruise ships and elsewhere. The devices are apparently used by the navy and are kept upright by a buoy. The glass is very distorting as everything is seen through a fish eye lens making fish in the distance and the reef quite small, which they are not. Still, a neat experience for someone who has never dived. My girlfriend got freaked out by the intro as she cannot swim and wouldn't go on the trip. I'd check it out on site before prepaying preferably if that's a concern you might have.
