This was my second trip to Cozumel and my new wife's first time. Having never stayed at Melia I wasn't sure what to expect, but I can honestly say I would never consider staying anywhere else on the island when we return in the future. Everything from the room, the food, waitstaff, pools, drinks and the beach were perfect. We could not have asked for anything more from our stay there. The staff knew us by name after the second or third day, our room was cleaned perfectly each morning when we returned from the huge breakfast buffet, and it really just felt like a home away from home the entire week. The only thing you can possibly pay for at Melia is a huge lobster tail to go along with your dinner, and tips for service that you feel deserves a tip (which we always did.) If you go, please tell Willian at the swim-up bar and Felipe at the inside bar that we said hello! Oh, and be sure to try the "Miami Vice" - yum!

Room Tip: To get the best room, try and book anything on the 3rd floor of the ocean side building. I reccomen...

From all the other reviews I read, I would say that everyone is pretty much dead on with their opinions. This is an older property, but it has the best beach by far of all the resorrs in the immediate area. Great snorkeling just a 6 - 8 minute walk down the beach. We were out for an hour and just floated back to our resort with the current. Saw some amazing wildlife, puffer fish, baby stingray, squid, even a baby shark.

As far as the resort itself, we had issues with our room, but they moved us to a new room and were very quick to respond to any issues. The buffet was OK - but the restaurant served a much better meal. I highly recommend making reservations for the restaurant. The snack bar was under construction, but it looks like it will be fabulous when it is done - in about a month.

We would like to call out a special thanks to some very outstanding people - Jamie (hyme) at the front desk was very helpful, William the door man gave a superior tour when we checked in and escorted us to our room, Captain Roger was very accomodating when we missed signing up for dinner, Alfonso was our breakfast and lunch waiter and did a superior job, Alfonso tought us some of the Myan langauage. Felipe - the BEST bartender EVER!! He always had a smile for us.. BUT our absolute favorite was Nemecio. He was our dinner waiter in the buffet and I wish all waiters were as concientious as him. Our glasses were always full, we never had to ask for anything. One day we came back late, after driving around the island, and he tracked us down on the beach with Mai Tai's becuase he knew the beach bar was already closed... He was a true delight...

All in all, this was a great place and we had an awesome vacation....

Room Tip: We booked late, but got a free room upgrade because of it.

We went to Cozumel for the first time and stayed at Melia due to the inexpensive trip. We loved it. The food is good, typical for buffet, but we didn't go hungry EVER. Every time you turn around the staff is always cleaning, always smiling. They made the trip worthwhile. I would not recommend the restaurant where you make reservations, the food was terrible. We missed the mexican night at the buffet to go eat there (parisian style) and were dissapointed. The beach is so nice, we had a room on the corner ..not in the tower and loved it. Didn't go for the ME experience and was glad, met people who did and they were paying more for nothing. The water is a bit cloudy, but you walk down to the hotel past the peer and the water was crystal. But our beach was better so it was great. We can't wait to go back. We rented a little car and drove around the island,it was the best. Also the lobster pirate cruise was a highlight of our trip. Very very fun.

We Love Cozumel and this was our third visit to Cozumel. We have stayed at Wyndham on the other side of the Island, and El Cozmuleno right next door. For the extra money above El Coz I would not rate it worth it. I did find the buffets a lot better at Melia but the sit down meals were nothing compared to El Coz. It was hard for most to arrange reservations but we ensured our reservations by tipping the maitre d. We never had a problem . I would rate the buffets a 4 out of 5 as there was always a wide choice. They were working on one of the restaurants while we were there so that would be another reason people found it hard to get reservations.
The night life was nil at Melia..but you make the fun you want to have.
The room was GORGEOUS. We did call the hotel and upgrade our room. We have done this the last couple of times when travelling instead of taking the upgrade from the travel adgent as it saves you the fee of the one person upgrade. You end up paying one fee instead of two.
Cozumel is a GREAT vacation place. It is so safe to travel around the island and the people are great. If you rent a jeep do it ahead of time on line and you save a ton of money. You must travel around the island if you go. Stop along the one side of the island for the most gorgeous beaches which you have all to yourself unless you go on a Sunday when the locals are off and crowd the beaches..

Room Tip: Call the hotle directly to upgrade

My wife and I stayed there for our Anniversary recently. It was my 5th time in Cozumel and her first, and I felt embarrassed that I took her there! The food was absolutely HORRIBLE in the hotel. The service there was decent at best. The A/C (as stated in another comment) was good in the hotel room, but was HORRIBLE in the lobby/bar. There was "supposed" to be a "snack bar" where they served burgers and dogs and nachos etc, yet it happened to be closed the entire time we were there. There was absolutely NO nightlife in the resort. I have been to other resorts on the island and they have a lot more well lit, outside bars with music and snack food and places for people to go. I highly recommend a different resort.

We stayed at the Melia Cozumel from Aug 15-19, 2011. Since it was the off-season, it wasn't crowded at all. Never had a problem with lines in the restaurants, etc. The food was OK, nothing special nor memorable.

The beds are hard as a rock! Not comfortable at all.

The beach sucks. Because of the pier put in several years ago, it has made the beach in front of the hotel very dark and full of seaweed. The water was warm, but not worth getting in. Everyone usually went down the beach to the next hotel past the pier. About 100 yards away. There the water is crystal clear, lots of fish and the water is actually cooler than on the other side!

We rented a car from Hertz to get around the island. Taxis were all over the place but also expensive, since the Melia isn't within walking distance of downtown. Car rental is the only way to go. Scooters are too dangerous! We met a family at the airport who had gotten into an accident with several of their scooters and a car. They got tore up pretty bad.

Would I recommend this hotel? Uh! Maybe....I think the Occidential is probably better. Would I go back to Cozumel? Maybe...Prefer the Cayman Islands better. At least there you don't have every store owner trying to get you into their store to buy something.

Room Tip: Rooms were nice and clean. Beds are hard!!! If you have a bad back beware!!!

We stayed at the Melia for a week. It was wonderful!! The waiters at both the buffet and the nice restaurant were very friendly and catered to your needs (we didn't even tip for the buffet waiters). Not much vegetarian food but at the nice restaurant they'll make you something special if you ask. :) (I didn't even ask and they made me a vegetable burrito). The adult pool was nice; perfect temperature. And there were only kids there one time and security came and kicked them out. The kids pool was VERY warm. Only went there once to play bingo (but they ended up not even playing because the bingo guy was fixing a TV.. ??) The food was very good, especially at the nice restaurant. Mosquitos were pretty annoying, so bring bug spray! The activities staff was very nice. One night they taught us how to salsa dance! There was a full, air conditioned gym. No TV in the gym though so bring your own entertainment. Felipe and Enrique are the best bartenders - they remembered what drinks you like and what you order. Snorkeling isn't the best but it's not a far walk to the next resort over. You can also take out kayaks for an hour for free. We went out one day and there were 5 or 6 dolphins jumping around in the ocean; so neat. Easy to get a taxi from the hotel - bell boys will call one for you. Check-in was pretty easy and check-out was even easier.

Room Tip: Ask for a room in the tower - beach view!!
