“17 Texans - Great Getaway and Fun”
Reviewed August 29, 2014

We had a great group of fun people and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay from June 23 - June 30. We had a group of 17 in 5 villas each in a different building. We chose the Occidental Grande particularly for diving excursions and that it was a 4 star resort compared to its 3 star sister resort next door. This resort had entertainment for our diverse group which consisted of teenagers, young adults and middle aged couples. We enjoyed the disco almost every night. We had a dinner party for the 17 of us at the Steak House which was wonderful so was the roof top Pizzeria. We enjoyed the buffets and we thought the food was fresh with a lot of choices. We enjoyed the drinks especially the Dirty Monkey and we tipped $1s so we always got extra good drinks and service. We rented jeeps, however a hodge-podge of different vehicles showed up because the cruise ships take priority. We toured the island and went to Punta Sur and the Tequila Factory and downtown. We did a Sting Ray Sanctuary where you pet, feed and swim with the Sting Rays and that was fun. We all had a variety of A/C temperatures in our rooms. The coldest rooms were on the ground floors. Our teenage kids had a vacation time of their lives with the all-inclusive feature. We were picked up at the resort pier for a snorkel excursion and our group of divers were picked up there too. The beach is wonderful, the sunset was beautiful, the grounds of this resort are beautiful and the mangrove reserve is a natural beauty. We came prepared with bug spray, but didn't use it. We turned our cell phones off and gave the resort's number to family for emergency contact. None of us wanted anything to do with the Internet during our stay. This resort provided us time to have meals together, play together, rest and slow down. We are hard working folks and those 8 days were the perfect getaway for us.

Room Tip: Ground room floors are the coolest.

My wife and I recently stayed here for our honeymoon; the timing was great as the weather was 90/sunny most days and the hotel was at low occupancy (they said 20-25%) so we never had a problem getting a nice spot on the beach or in the restaurant. Staff was friendly (great job by Francisco at front desk) and helpful. Food was pretty good although you will start to see repeating items everyday in the buffet so make sure you try the a-la-carte restaurants. Don't forget to try the free boats by the beach - if you don't know how to sail, they can take you out in the water or you can pay for lessons; you can also try the paddle boats. We had a minor problem with opening the safe in the room but we called the front desk & they responded quickly with a visit to help us. Overall I'd highly recommend this hotel especially for couples!

Room Tip: Bring your own booze - like most all-inclusive resorts, the alcohol seems watered down!

I have to admit that we had some concerns after reading other reviews of this location. Since we are fresh off our vacation, now is the best time to give an honest list of pros and cons. Let's start with the cons because I like to end on a good note.

Cons:

- Timeshare/ Vacation Membership sales people. They are relentless. We finally gave in just to get a good deal on scooters, but seriously - it starts at the airport and doesn't end until you go home.

- Chaotic check in - we were immediately directed to someone wanting to sell us a vacation membership. We didn't even have our room yet and we were STARVING - we actually had to be pretty direct (aka rude) to get our point across.

- Room was not ready - but we were able to get some lunch while they got our room ready.

- Food - it wasn't terrible but it was pretty repetitive. Some of it looked suspect as in it wasn't so fresh - just be cautious and use your best judgment. Desserts were not anything to write home about - which is just as well because after all the chips, guacamole, and margaritas, who needs the extra calories?

- Not enough bartenders poolside - there was always a line regardless of the time of day.

- Strong possiblity we had bed bugs - my husband and I both came home with suspicious looking 'bites' on our arms. Definitely not mosquito bites. Beware.

- Housekeeping was somewhat of an issue - they didn't remove the empty cups and they left towels on the floor. We finally set our cups outside and they sat there for two days before someone came to pick them up. We tipped the housekeeping attendant on our first day there, in addition to the gratuities that are supposedly included in the package. First day we had fresh hibiscus blossoms placed throughout the room - by the third day we had cups piled up everywhere and dirty towels on the floor....

- Amenities are lame - does anyone really want a shoe shine cloth when you're in Cozumel? C'mon now. And a shower cap?? They only provide shampoo and a weird smelling shower gel. Bring your own conditioner if you plan on needing it.

- Gift shop prices were exorbitant -one bottle of aloe gel was $19 USD. Bring your own.

- Would have enjoyed hearing more carribean/ latin style music vs American Top 40 music at the disco. Seriously - we left the states to escape our horrible selection of music. :-)

-Kind of stuffy and hot inside the bar area by the lobby/entrance. A ceiling fan would go a long way just to add some circulation - it was more comfortable to drink outside in the shaded areas.

PROS:

Very friendly staff - everyone was very accommodating and more than happy to get you anything you needed.

The rooms are beautiful - bed was extra firm and to me that's a pro.

Margaritas are outstanding - ask for a shot of Cointreau to go with it or ask for a top shelf margarita if you like them a little stronger. The bar close to the lobby has higher end liquors.

Pools are sparkling clean all day. More than enough lounge chairs.

Iguanas!!!! Senor Pancho hangs out by the adults only pool - there are at least 20 iguanas on site and you are guaranteed to see them at least once a day during the afternoon heat.

Nice size beach area for snorkeling and swimming - plenty of lounge chairs and palapas for everyone.

Grounds are impeccable - we didn't see any garbage anywhere with the exception of the cups piled up by our room.

Beautiful landscaping everywhere - they work very hard at keeping the grounds so beautiful.

Diving (see my review for Cozumel Marine World) is very good by the hotel. 5 minutes away from Planacar Reef, and the dive boats will pick you up at the pier. Ridiculously convenient.

Room Tip: We stayed in building 16 which was convenient to both the beach and the front lobby. Rumor has it a...

We recently stayed at Occidental Grand Cozumel for a week, the hotel was really nice, beach area is beautiful, diving and snorkeling was awesome, First Club rooms are nice and comfortable, hotel grounds are well maintained, the only thing I would change is the food. Buffet food during lunch and dinner are not so great, not a lot to choose from, last year we stayed at Allegro Playacar and the food was great. The service at this hotel is great, anywhere you go they treat you very well.

We enjoyed our stay at the Occidental Grand Cozumel. The island is really a paradise! The grounds are beautiful. They have a very gorgeous beach where you can swim and enjoy water activities daily included in your all inclusive. The rooms are spacious and comfortable and well appointed. The staff has been amazingly friendly and accommodating. Adrian and Manuel made sure everything we needed was taken care of. Food selection is good and the fish is outstanding! Service has been impeccable. We definitely recommend this hotel.

My husband and I spent a week on this property. The beach and pools are beautiful.

I didn't think the room was as nice as it could be, the tiled floors seemed worn and old (not what we are used to). The TV was not HD but it worked. The air conditioning in the first room was perfect then a king bed became available so we moved to that room but we noticed immediately that the air was not working. They sent someone up within 5 minutes to fix it. It never got as cold as we wanted and began to leak in the restroom from the ceiling unit. So they changed our rooms immediately.

This room was cold and we continued our vacation. We did their timeshare and received funny money that we used towards snorkling. The boat picked us up on the dock (on the property) and trip was fantastic. Snorking was unreal, just beautiful. We also did a Jeep caravan around the island. Another fantastic day and worth the money. Took a taxi into town and yes it is $18 one way, watched a movie, shopped and had dinner. The next day we took the ferry to Playa del Carmen. That was an adventure.

I liked that they stuck to their men must wear pants to the reservation restaurants for everyone and no tank tops at dinner in the buffet area. But really, who brings pants to vacation where it is 90% humidity? The food in the restaurants was delicious. We paid extra for the lobster but the rib eye was a large portion and delicious.

So if you don't mind large iguanas and get past the humidity the staff was helpful and friendly and the grounds were beautiful. I would return.

Room Tip: All buildings are set in a jungle setting. Building 1-12 are closer to the center of the main buildi...

My wife and I were there from August 1 thru Aug 7. Grounds, pool and beach were beautiful. That's about where it stopped. The drinks were bad, food horrible, and beds not worth sleeping in. Not to mention the hounding from the time share people on site. We had a room where our safe stopped working and called the front desk and they sent out one of the security personel. He came in and beat on the back of the door and the safe started working again. He stated it was ok and started to leave. Luckily it stopped again before he left and then he called someone from maintenance. He arrived and pulled an electronic board out of his pocket wrapped in tissue and then replaced the existing one from the back of the safe door. It started working fine then stopped again. Called the front desk back and they sent the same security person out to show me how to work the safe. For some reason it would not work for him either. Went to front desk and was talking with a gentleman there about getting another room. He advised me they were overbooked and did not have another king room available. I told him it did not matter if it was a king room, we needed a room with a safe that worked. He suddenly found a king room that needed to be cleaned and we could have that one. We packed our bags and left our valuables at the front desk. We were told to return at 3 pm to get our room keys and they would have our bags already in the room. This is around 11 am. Went back to desk at 3 and received our room keys. Went to the room and our bags were no where to be found. Called the desk and actually went up to the desk and still took over an hour to get our bags. The food at the restaurants was excellent but all the buffets were terrible. For good food and drinks just walk down the beach to Alberto's. So to end this we would definitely find a different place to stay. If u don't get a rental it is $18 one way into town and $28 to airport by taxi.
