“Beautiful Beach! Cozy Hotel! Highly Recommend!”
Reviewed April 22, 2014

I stayed at this hotel for three days while passing through Cozumel. I took the ferry from Playa Del Carmen to Cozumel (cost $13 USD one way) and then took a taxi from downtown Cozumel (where the ferry lands) to the hotel (cost $15 one way). Be careful of taxi drivers here. They are much more ruthless and will try to double the normal fare if you are not aware or look like a tourist. There are two types of taxi fares: the local fare for people that live there, and the tourist fare for gringos passing through. Never pay more than $15 for any taxi ride, regardless of where you are going. Otherwise, you're money will evaporate. Taxi drivers here will easily rip you off and not think twice about it. If they say no, then just walk away. They will change their mind quickly. Rent a scooter or a car in downtown at the ferry terminal. It's cheaper, faster, and easier. Hotel was very clean and nice. Boutique-style, but with a brand name. Very private and secluded environment. You are completely safe. Wildlife all over the property (turtles, iguanas, alligators, etc). All-inclusive value. Can't beat the price! Very affordable. Decent food, but breakfast could be better. Lunch is always beach side. Excellent view. Companies on-site offer scuba/snorkel tours, but watch out! In downtown, snorkel trip will cost $30 USD. If you book on hotel property, cost will exceed $50 USD. Always exchange your USD into Mexican pesos. Never pay in USD to anyone (taxi, bar, tours, etc). Everyone will give you a very bad conversion rate and you will always pay higher than normal. Seedy nightlife. Federal police and army soldiers constantly patrolling the streets out in full force with weapons on hand. Safe, but still a little eery. Beautiful beach onsite at the hotel. Very nice sand and blue water. There's a pelican always hanging around on the beach that is friendly toward people and likes when people throw him food. Overall, I had a great time and highly recommend this hotel if you're ever coming through here! A- (only minus because of power outage one night and had to take a shower in pitch black)

Room Tip: Deluxe room is fine. No need to waste your money on the next step above.

Had a great, relaxing time!

Have an open mind when you go to any resort whether in your home country or out of country. We booked through Costco Travel, they were great to work with and ensure our trip was a smooth one start to finish.

Resort
Upon arrival - our bags were tagged with our room #’s assigned. The resort does not have the traditional “Reception Desk” you are escorted to a desk. We comment several time we were Concierge and had VIP check in. The staff did not quit get that - we were sent to another room where we were given information about the resort services - how they could help plan our excursions etc. - we were never approached by any Time Share reps - thank goodness. I was tired and grumpy - they got the picture. We actually were supposed to go to the Royal Club check in office (we did not book Royal Club just the Concierge Service but still had the ammenties of VIP check in). Once we found our way there, They had drinks for us, got our room information, setup our restaurant reservations. etc. We arrive early and knew our rooms would probably not be ready so had lunch, explored and set up our diving for the week.

Our rooms were right where I had requested Bldg. 19 on the 3rd floor facing the Relaxation Pool close to the beach and the dive shack. (Tip: I always call who ever I am booking through a week before traveling to ensure they have all my request down. If need be I will call the resort also - kind of a squeaky wheel.) We asked for King beds but knew they are a premium so decided we would take what we were given - double beds actually worked out better. We had corner rooms at the top of the stairs so we could visit over coffee in the mornings from our balconies. The rooms were large, clean and well supplied with stocked mini fridge, coffee maker etc. The safe worked and air conditioning as well, lots of hot water for showers. The beds are a little hard - requested mattress toppers. Oh, the pillows they are the worst lumps of stuff I have ever come across - take your own if you can. All and all can’t complain about the rooms though. Tipping your maid and others that serve you a couple of dollars now and then helps also.

The grounds are kept very clean and are well maintained. Flowers were blooming so was very pretty. Did not see as many critters as I thought I would but some turtles and a few Iguanas wondering around. They had activities for everyone going on at the pools during the day and events scheduled at night - so there was always something going on.

Food
We ate at the buffet most meals. They had a great variety. The fruits and vegetables were always fresh. The entrées were decent - we ate a lot of chips and guacamole, fresh tortillas, fish tacos etc. Again like any buffet you need to peruse the selections then figure out your favorites. Breakfast, lunch and dinner buffets were good. Not exceptional, but there was always something to eat and kept us filled up. We ate at both the specialty restaurant. Steak house was ok - had great ceviche and coconut shrimp the steak was a little grisly. The Mediterranean one was by far our favorite. They had exceptional food and seemed a little more upscale. The long pants rule seem a little much in both places considering it was hot and no fans - the men should at least be able to were dress shorts at least in the steak house.

Diving
We used ProDive that was located on site. They were very accommodating, helped us set up dives for each day, and arranged for our dive over on the mainland at the Cenotes. During each dive, the Dive Masters were great, professional and really took care of their charges and made each dive a great one. Drawbacks were how chaotic it would be when we getting ready in the morning. Our equipment was stored in totes, brought out and placed next to on another -you are talking about 30 totes. People would be mixing their stuff in with yours trying to get their gear ready. Once ready, they crammed us onto the boats- 16-18 people per boat. You needed to get on the boat quickly or you would not have a spot. Our friends ended up sitting on the floor a couple of times. One boat in particular was in rough shape (Gypse). The tanks were not secure and were always falling out on the deck. You would come out of the water and have no place to set your tank. I believe I saw three boats - they need another boat and need to invest a little money to upgrade what they have to make them safer.

I was happy to see the amount of recovery the reef is making. The overall health of the reef was great to see, the size, variety and colors of the coral and fauna were a testimony to that.

Do not miss going over to the mainland to dive the Cenotes. It was the highlight of our trip! We booked through ProDive and they did a great job. You take a cab to the ferry in town then once across a ProDive rep meets you and escorts you to a resort where you pick up your 5-mil suit and make sure you have all the proper gear. We went to the Chikin-Ha and Ponderosa Cenotes. They say you will always see daylight. Do not be fooled there were times that we literally down in the dark caves. The dive masters are all highly trained and you only go in groups of 4. It was the highlight of our trip. Our guide was Gustafson-very patient and personable. He took time to make sure our experience was exceptional. So a must to fit into dive schedule.

All and all I can recommend the resort and the dive facility for those looking for a good value for family or couples wanting to get away. Hope this helps in your decision making.

Room Tip: Building 18 or 19 close to beach and dive shack. Request 3rd floor- view over the tree canopy is ni...

My family loves the water, sun, beach, and scuba diving, and this was a great place for all of us! All 3 of my teenage kids are now PADI certified Open Water Divers and I couldn't think of a better place for them to experience their first dives.
The rooms were great, the drinks were endless, and the food was good - not great, but nobody had any trouble more than enough food to keep them full.
My kids loved the water volleyball, water polo, and beach voleyball. Plenty of things to do, and a very friendly staff made sure everyone got anything they wanted.
I will be back!

Room Tip: none of the roms have a beach or pool view. i prefer the first floor.

We were at the Occidental in April 2014. We were with a group of 5 families and this was our second annual trip together. Two of the families had been to the Occidental Grand several times and really liked the unique atmosphere of the resort.

The resort itself is quite nice. It is surrounded by mature landscaping that makes it feel like you are in a well manicured jungle. Large iguanas and geckos are everywhere giving the resort a naturalistic feel. There are several fountain pools at the front of the hotel that seem to be a bit neglected (full of leaves, sand, and minimal water). There are two pools with one being designated as a relaxation pool. The second pool is near the beach which is a short walk across a rustic wooden bridge. The walk across the bridge is quite something.....it spans over a swamp area with turtles and alligators below. The bridge area was very cool but the bridge also appears a bit neglected (parts were wrapped in "Caution" tape which does not give you the warm and fuzzies).

The beach area and beach pool were nice with plenty of chairs and shaded areas (umbrellas and palapas). The problem with the beach and pool areas are they are only serviced by a single bartender. There was no drink service outside the restaurants for 95% of our stay.

The rooms are set in smaller buildings with 24 rooms per building (3 floors each with 8 rooms per floor). The buildings are octagon shaped with the centers open and full of mature landscaping. I really liked the setup of the buildings.....they were quite different from most resorts. The rooms themselves are decent. We had two beds with a bit of furniture sprinkled in. Each room had a flat screen TV with cable. The bathrooms were large and had oversized tile showers with fantastic water pressure! Each room had a balcony and ours overlooked the relaxation pool. Each room had a mini-refrigerator which was stocked with water and sodas daily and beer every other day (which I found rather odd compared to other resorts we have visited). The air conditioning kept the room cooler than outside, but it never cooled the room to our liking (in fairness most of the resorts we have visited were similar in this regard).

Service - this is where the hotel is really lacking. As I've already said, the entire beach area and beach pool are serviced by a single bartender. There were no servers anywhere except in the restaurants. Beach towels were in short supply.....each day they would run out for a period of time. The housekeeping staff would take our dirty towels but would not always replace them. Most days we were not left a wash cloth. Although we had 4 people in our room, we often only received 3 bath towels. All of our friends had the same issue. My daughter asked one of the housekeepers for a wash cloth and she was told "No". When I complained to the Front Desk they said they would send them immediately. Three hours later, I had to call again. When they delivered extra towels, I hid them in the dresser so we had them the rest of the week.

At breakfast the plates, glasses, and bowls were hard to come by. The staff were working tirelessly to keep up with the food and glassware, but they could only work with what they had. It looked to me like they were picking up plates off the tables as fast as they could because they needed to be washed for the next round of people. I've never seen a resort run out of glassware like this place.....it has to be a management issue! I found the food selection to be OK but not great. The omelet station was very good, but one person was cooking for everyone which meant there was a decent wait most of the time. The breakfast menu was 99% the same each day. It would have been nice to see a bit of variety. The buffet restaurant was warm most of the time. A few ceiling fans would do wonders to improve the comfort of the guests.

Lunch was only served at the beach pavilion. The location was right on the beach with wonderful views from most of the tables. Like breakfast, the menu was 90% the same each day. I proved after a week that man can survive on chips and guacamole alone. The burgers were made of mystery meat and the hotdogs were low quality. The one or two main entrees changed daily and most were pretty decent. There was an ice cream station with scooped ice cream which was thoroughly enjoyed by most.

Dinner was served at the main buffet, 2 specialty restaurants, and a pizza place. The buffet food was just OK and is not going to win any awards. The theme changed nightly, but I was never wowed by any of it. We ate at the Mediterranean and Mexican Steakhouse restaurants once each. Both times we received good service and tasty food. It was a welcomed break from the buffet. I had steak at both restaurants and they were both very good. Guests are allowed to make 3 reservations at the specialty restaurants during a 7 night stay. The pizza place was unique. It is situated on a rooftop and has great atmosphere. Pizza takes a bit longer than forever to arrive once ordered. The first time we tried it, our pizza took 2 hours to make it to the table. Had we not been with friends and enjoying drinks, it would have been very frustrating. As it was, we found it comical. Service improved during the week because our next visit to the pizza place ended with our pizza being brought out in only 1.5 hours. I again think this is mostly a management issue as only one man was making the dough and pizzas for the entire restaurant. There was a self serve salad bar, but it would have been nice if tables were served bread, chips, guacamole, etc. to stave off hunger while the pizzas cooked. The quality of the pizzas were good. I highly recommend the Mexican pizza if you don't mind waiting for it. We found the staff at the pizza place to be completely inflexible. We asked for guacamole and chips on our first visit and were told no. Keep in mind this was the night we waited 2 hours for our pizzas. It seemed strange they wouldn't help us out as chips and guacamole were on the menu with one of the entrees.

Overall we liked the atmosphere, but found the quality of service to be lacking at this resort. We have stayed at 5 all inclusive resorts in the past 3 years and the service at this one was by far the worst. It truly is a shame as the resort is beautiful. It would not take a lot to make this a wonderful vacation spot. They need to purchase more glassware, beach towels, room towels, etc. so people aren't waiting for the basics. A bump in food quality would go a long way as would hiring a bit more staff to provide bar service in the public areas. We had a great vacation with fantastic friends, but I won't be staying at another Occidental resort anytime in the near future.

Room Tip: Building 19 is nearest the relaxation pool and beach areas....it's also the farthest from the re...

We spent Spring break at the Occidental Grand Hotel and were with a group through our local scuba diving shop. The shop had selected the location, negotiated rates with diving, etc... So we jumped on the trip. We did elect to upgrade to the Royal Club... Figured we'd have a bit more space in the room as a family of four, better proximity to the beach and dive shop, an extra restaurant/pool. Not sure we fully got our money's worth for upgrade, but it was very nice. The checkin and checkout were a lot easier than others have described.

Things we liked a lot:
1. safe, helpful and fun diving operation. All of staff was helpful, pleasant, safety minded, yet not over bearing so we had good, long and enjoyable dives. We spent all week with Nacho and Ben- both very nice guys who did a nice job with our whole group. The boat crew was also very helpful.... Very hands on, always willing to help you with equipment, give you a hand on/ off the boat, etc... Very polite, helpful and pleasant. My 10 year old finished his certification there. The diving was very good and close to hotel... So no long boat rides! Beautiful reefs, lots of nice, big life. We'd happily go back to dive Cozumel.
2. Really awesome kid activities- Abi and her helpful sidekicks by the pool were terrific. Always happy and smiling, always with activities to keep the kids occupied, learning and happy whether in the water, snorkeling, doing crafts, etc. they kept the kids happy and entertained... And safe. Special thank you for their kindness to Nicolas, my oldest son who has special needs.... The entire staff in the Kids Club to the entire resort staff were unbelievably kind to him throughout our stay. We needed an extra hour when he left so he could bid them all farewell! He did the pool scuba diving so he could try it (his brother got certified there, so lots of interest). When he came up, all around the pool cheered for him... Guests and staff. It made his week!
3. Safety and natural setting of resort: I liked that we were away from city center and cruise ship docking.... Felt more tranquil, safe and relaxed. The mangrove setting with iguanas around was really beautiful, authentic and lovely. The evening entertainment was mixed....we loved the band mid week--- great musicians, and all guests were dancing and happy.
4. Pool / beach area: really nice pool on beach that had activities, a nice setting, happy bartenders (Santos was a standout making me margaritas and my son Nicolas lots of milk!!) and a great lunch setting on beach. The beachfront was very nice here.... Better than other parts of Cozumel as I understand it. This is where we spent most of our time that we weren't diving. You could lounge / relax or play volleyball or water polo. The kids were always close by with Abi.
5. Spa was good- I got a deep tissue message and it was fine. Not spectacular, but fine.

What could be better:
1. The food was so so: it wasn't bad, and there were certain things that were very good like fish at lunch. But overall, I didn't love the food compared to another all inclusive we've gone to. We did try all of the a la carte restaurants... I thought the Grill one was best, followed by the Mediterranean one (likely tied with the Royal Club one). The pizza was not so good... Wouldn't recommend it. I wish they did breakfast on the beach.... Would be a lovely view and closer for those diving.
2. The timeshare people: my husband got sucked in... He was trying to rent a car for the day. A hotel staff member directed him to someone in the front area with hotel clothing on...so my husband thought he was staff.... Turned out they were timeshare guys and he got lured in. It was annoying and took too long. Who in the world makes a decision like that in 60- 90 min? ... We sure don't. They'd do better with a follow up brochure to guests once they are home in my view.
3. Bugs: they can't help it, but I got a ton of insect bites.... Literally about 70 on my legs from one of the evening activities. I think they were sand fleas vs mosquitoes, but not sure.

All in all, a good experience. Delightful grounds, very good diving, very friendly staff and acceptable food. The other guests were also,friendly.... Obviously can't guarantee that every week, but seems to attract fun, friendly types. I'd recommend it for families.

My husband and I just spent 2 nights in Occidental Cozumel, we're in Mexico for our honeymoon. So far we've been to Cancun, Tulum and Isla Mujeres which were all amazing.
When we arrived to Occidental in Cozumel nothing was amazing. First able the lady at the reception, Margarita said she couldn't find our reservation, and when she finally did find it we mentioned that we are here for our honeymoon. She was extremely rude and said to us ״so what you think you're getting something special because you're on your honeymoon?" We were shocked! No hotel in Mexico so far had treated us like that and i didn't even care to answer since she was so unpleasant.
On our way to the room, they had like 5 different concierge who were very hungry to sell us their activities and snorkeling trips. In order for us to buy the trips we had to attend a 90 minutes presentation the following morning. As it turned out the presentation was aiming to make us buy the company's whole life time-share (this hotel is very hungry for people's money and nothing more).
When we got to our room off course we got 2 double beds instead of one king bed. I really don't understand this hotel why would she put us in that room?! I mentioned in our reservation that we would like to have one king bed, but i guess they don't even notice the reservations people make. Me and my husband had to sleep on a small bed which wasn't very comfortable as we hoped it would be.
To make our stay even worse, on our second night they had the electricity off completely because of some accident. There was no electricity and no water supply in the whole resort from 16:00 PM until the middle of the night. How can a five star resort not have an electrical generator?????
We came for our honeymoon, we didn't pay 250 dollars a night to wash ourselves with mineral water bottles! At night we could barely sleep since there was no air condition and the room was very hot and choky.
In addition to that we asked the front desk for 2 wake up calls in the next morning since we had no electricity to charge my phone. They only called us one time in the morning which wasn't enough for us and lucky the electricity came back on in the middle of the night and my phone was charged with the alarm on.
This hotel has terrible costumer service for the guests, especially newly weds like us who spend our money on the best hotels for this trip. We will definitely not come back and not recommend any of the occidental hotels in the future.
Even if you have a good resort and nice facilities, costumer service is the most important thing and this resort completely lacks it.

Our vacation was with Air Canada. Hotel was beautiful! We loved our villa #17 and our room. We arrived late in the evening, only us to check in so it was very fast:) We asked at same time for a la carte booking for my husband b-day and we got to Los Olivos Restaurant. Bell boy took us to our villa in a small and funny cart and helped with luggage up to 3-rd floor room. All trip in cart was like in dark jungle and later in room when we opened balcony we didn't see much so dark but you could hear jungle voices and birds:)
We didn't see any share people and after shower we went to eat late meal upstairs in Pizza place. All lobby looked very nice, spanish hacienda style, very nice decorations, warm vibe. Next day we had coffee on small balcony but two person could seat no problem. View was priceless! All around jungle, thick garden and dozens of the palm trees and bamboo:) Villa had inside garden with few palms and all looked very nice. All walkways had a set of a fontaine a front of every villa so you know were to turn home, easy:)
Very jungle-like gardens, all organic. True, some smell from wetland was present but didn't bother me or my husband. Breakfast in buffet was always good but this time I didn't wait for omlett because they were doing HUGE sizes and some people were still asking for extra bacon and cheese!?
Beach was lovely, cleaned every day, true not many free chairs but we were waiting two days to see who is doing what and we just did what all people were doing so no problem. Some days all chairs were booked but daybeds were free so again no problem:)
Nice music around pool, fun to watch games and listen our entertainment guy to say "oh my gotto!" or "don't be lazy-be crazy" :)
Pool bar was VERY busy but big thank you for their hard work and always smile! Lunch was very good and so close to beach, no need to walk all the way to the lobby buffet. True, some waiting in line but not true it was too hot. We always came from swimming or from under shower so actually it was nice breez while waiting. On the beach they had sort of gazebo-massage hut which they turned twice to nice event. Once it was romantic dinner for two and second was actually wedding. Temperatures were a killer, our protection cream 60 didn't work so well :( We would like to say big thank you to our lady who was cleaning villa #17. One day, just after we came back from the beach our magnetic card didn't work. We read before about this problem so we ask her to help us to get to room to have shower and we can go later to lobby to ask for help. She was trying to open with her card but she coudn't so she called from her cell to mechanic and he came and said our battery was done. He charged battery and all was good! She saved us from walking to and from lobby. Such big help:) Thank you!
Few nights we had visitors from town who was selling there stuff and dancers who was performing Maya dance show :) NICE :)
A la carte dinner was very good and we were very happy. Prossuto ham and smoke salmon was really good :) We did two trips from hotel. One was snorkeling and second was tour around island. Snorkeling was much worse what I was expecting:( After traveling to Roatan Island in Honduras and seeing there reef I can't give any other reef good review, sorry. Coral was too deep to enjoy same way like in Roatan. But our guide Pancho was so much fun and so energetic so we had fun anyway and we came back with smile on our faces:) Tour around island was fun too including : fishing village and beautiful view to Altantic Ocean, tekila place with some testing, Mayan ruins with chance to get picture with Mayan Princess, town trip to St. Miguel for some shopping and stop at "Tiki Tok" to eat. Beautiful chance to take pictures with diamond shops, with huge cruise ships, with gigant Gold Eagles at ferry terminal.
Our time we spent in hotel was VERY pleasant and private. Most relaxing vacation from all, really. Hotel was very clean, food was good and gardens were just perfect. What was very suprising we didn't see much moskitos! All 8 days maybe two-three:) True they have nice jungle animals on property. We seen wild bore, many grey and yellow iguanas, tropical racoons and black birds. True, black birds were VERY noisy but only before to go sleep and just before sunrise. It's normal for all birds just too bad for Royal Club because their tree is just next to Club.
Overall our stay in Grand Occidental Cozumel was very lovely and almost perfect. To us was very important to have some private time, good large room with bathroom, not many people around, lots of green and flowers, nice beach, good food and drink. Everything was here as we imagined and better. Thank you to all from Grand Occidental for making our vacation and our b-day so special :) It was our first visit to Mexico and to Cozumel Island but we will be back here with our adult kids because place is a really small gem. We can recommend this hotel to our friends and we already did at our work place:)

Room Tip: Our villa # 17 had same distance to lobby, buffet (up) and to beach, large pool, lunch buffet (down...
