“Nice and tranquil”
Reviewed February 17, 2013

If you want a laid back vacation , this is the place. We were there from Feb 3 - Feb 9, 2013.
Food and service was good, grounds are very well maintained. Staff is super friendly and helpful.
Beach is beautiful, lots of chairs both on the beach and the pools. Shows at night are not extravagant but they do their best. Rooms are very clean but a little outdated. Usual word of advice, do not get drawn in by the time share vendors. Our air Canada rep even warned us about
the free stuff ploy they use to draw you in. All in all, we would go back. Happy vacationing !!!

Room Tip: Avoid ground floor.

This is a very nice property our room was well maintained and kept very clean. The cleaning staff left a whimsical "towel character" every day, and the mini frig was kept well stocked. The food was above average and even the picky eater could find something at the well stocked buffets and the specialty dining areas are excellent. The beach area is wonderful with two great pools and lots of loungers and shade on the sandy beach. The snorkeling off the beach leaves something to be desired though and you can loan snorkel gear from the local dive shop but only for a three hour stretch and all must be back in at 4:30. We were also disappointed that there are no ocean views from any of the properties rooms. The property is a long and expensive cab ride from almost anywhere, it is one of the southern most resorts. This would have all been acceptable if not for the timeshare aspect of the place. You are hijacked as soon as you have registered, even before you see your room. They promise you cheeper prices on pretty much anything to get you to talk to the Occidental timeshare guys. Beware you get what you pay for, or less if they can manage it. Alex sold us a less expensive tour than the on site travel agent had offered this also meant a cheeper, much cheeper tour. We were expecting an all inclusive luxury tour bus. What we got was crammed like sardines into a glorified taxi cab with seven other unfortunate souls. We were offered no refreshments with water and sodas $3.00 for a 12oz beverage. The only bathroom stop was long over due and it was at an overpriced souveneer shop. We were told nothing in advance of our itinery and didnt bring our suits thus missing a wonderful part of the tour. We also found out that our "wonderful deal" was at least $15.00 more than anyone else in the cab had paid. After a long hot and exhausting day we had one last surprise. We had taken the ferry over in the am. We bought a round trip ticket, big mistake the ferrys are not connected and though there is a ferry every hour it is not the same company. We were not told to only buy a one way ticket, as were the people who purchased tickets downtown. We ended up with the choice of either waiting two hours to use our $25 dollar ticket or buying a new ticket. When we complained at the hotel we were assured that it would be made right but Alex wasnt there and would be in later, and later and later. Do Not buy any thing from the friendly guys in the travel area.

Definitely a 5 star resort!

Food:
All restaurants offered a great selection of food and the a la carte restaurants had outstanding dinners. My wife is a picky eater and never once left a meal hungry. There was always something on the menu for every taste. The buffet breakfast, lunch, and dinners were also great. I had the best time at lunch time as there was a great buffet by the pool/beach. The fish, burgers, hotdogs, chicken, and finger foods were all outstanding and well stocked.

Accomodations:
The rooms were well kept and well stocked. I was not disappointed with the quality of the linens, pillows, or the cleanliness. Staff did a wonderful job of keeping the rooms clean and beer stocked in the fridge. The grounds keeping staff did an amazing job of keeping the resort clean with rarely seeing them.

Staff:
All bar and wait staff were very attentive, and were always checking in on people relaxing on the beach or pool side. Very seldom did I need to go to the bar myself and if I did it's because I wanted to be amused by the great personality of bartenders. They all had their own specialty and were eager to provide you with the best drink possible.

Grounds:
My wife and I took a walk down the beach to the Iberostar as they have better snorkeling right off their beach. The condition of their beach was atrocious. Empty glasses, straws, limes and lemons from drinks, all strew about. They definitely did not show the same level of care or attention as the Occidental. I didn't see garbage on the grounds anywhere on our resort and was blown away about how good the ground looked with how seldom you saw grounds keeping staff. Almost as if they have ninjas as grounds keepers.

Value:
My wife and I didn't spend over 2500.00 on our trip and feel that we got every pennies worth out of the trip. The staff and the food make this place an unforgettable resort that I would gladly go back to over and over again.

Location:
A bit further from the main strip of Cozumel as you're the second or third last resort on that stretch of the island but I preferred that. The dive boat from the company I used came right to the resort, and because I was usually the last to get picked up it gave me more time at breakfast and to get ready. Also the cab ride into town is so quick it almost doesn't seem as though it's much of a problem being a bit further away.

Overall I would definitely stay at this resort again and would recommend it to anyone considering a vacation to Cozumel. They have great excursion packages and wonderful staff to make your stay more than comfortable as well as enjoyable. The food is the icing on the cake as you never feel as though there isn't something for everyone. Even kids will like their food.

Room Tip: For a better room, ask for a room on the top floor, much nicer view from there.

We've stayed over 15 times, and love it. The Occidental Grand is by far the best place on the island, and we know because we've looked around. Dive Palancar is the best dive shop nearest to the best dive spots. The service is friendly, no need gets ignored, Ricardo, Clemente, Lobo, Nettie, Crystal, Alexandro, Ismael, Javier, Victor, Edwin, Didi, and lots more that I can't think of right now are so appreciated!

Room Tip: Royal Club is great, but any room is good!

I travelled with my wife and 2 other couples to the Grand the week of January 26th to February 2nd. We upgraded to have the concierge service and it was well worth the difference in price. The resort is very nicely laid out with beautiful landscaping. At least 95% of the staff were excellent (and who knows if the other 5% may have been having a bad day). The beach was cleaned regularly as was the rest of the resort. I had to see the doctor that services the resort about an ear infection (barotrauma from incorrect pressurizing while diving) and was treated very well and professionally, (thanks Dr Cardenas). We really had a great time and regretted having to return to "reality". Time to get back to work to save for next time!

My husband and I have been to Cozumel several times but this was our first stay at OGC. We booked it for our wedding after the resort wedding planner was able to provide our group travel agent with detailed wedding package information right away. Our group of 40 had a wonderful time. The group stayed from January 26-February 2, and we stayed an additional week, until the 9th. The grounds were immaculate, the food was excellent and service was the best we had experienced so far, in particular Ricardo, who was our wedding planner, the restaurant staff and the activities staff. The beach was by far the nicest of any we have ever been at and the snorkelling was fantastic.

After reading some of the other reviews, I would agree that it is wise to suggest a room that is not on the main floor, as they are a bit more damp. However, not a deal breaker.

We were upgraded to the Royal Club but all of our guests stayed in the regular rooms, and I would have to say the upgrade would not be worth it. The only real perks are express check-in, and the restaurant, which was great at dinner, but breakfast and lunch were just as good at the buffet.

As for the wedding, it could not have gone any better. Everything was taken care of - We just had to show up. Ricardo did a fantastic job and the weddng was beautiful. All of our guests agreed it was the nicest wedding they have ever been to. And the photographer hired by the resort, Edgar Mendoza (We actually had his wife as our photographer) was superb.

Of all the other resorts we have stayed at in Cozumel, this one we will be returning to, for the beach and exceptional service alone.

We stayed at the OCG and I will break it down for you. The resort is a 4 star but to be honest it's more like a 3.5.
Pros- The staff at the OCG are amazing. We were treated like royalty and were always greeted with a smile.
Cons-Stay away from Victor at the activity desk. Promises you one thing and delivers another. He was even so tricky that he tried to get us to pay the difference in a tour that he quoted us. Nothing was given on paper. We were told to come by every other day to ask about the tours. He is shady so stay away. You are better to book with your tour provider...more professional and guaranteed.
The food at this hotel is good. The buffet at the beach was great. Something to eat everytime. The main buffet was good as well. If you didn't find something you liked, the waiters offered us to order off the a la carte menus...amazing service.
The beach and pools are fantastic. They are always clean and there were always chairs, so you didn't have to get up at the crack of dawn to reserve a chair.
The rooms. Now this is my only real complaint. They are outdated and need some sprucing up. They smell moldy and the sheets stunk. My best advice would bring a candle to burn. Also the AC was really LOUD and made it hard to sleep.
Tours-we went to Chitzen Itza...I don't recommend it. It's way to long of a day. Beautiful to see, but do the tour when you are staying on the mainland. We also did the Wild Tours with the off road vehicles. Again don't do it. It was more like getting whip lash for 3 hours.
Also this resort is 20mins from downtown so it leaves little to do at the night life. It costs $15 each way, so it can get expensive if you want a night out.
Overall I would come back to this hotel as the people were great, the beach and pool were fantastic. Just know what your getting yourself into.

Room Tip: There is no rooms close to the beach, so try and ask for a room 17 or 18. Stay on the top floors.
