“Great place to relax”
Reviewed December 27, 2012 via mobile

Visited this resort during Christmas with my family. Excellent place to be for diving/snorkeling with the wharf right there! The food was OK at the main buffets. The two A-La-Carte were very good! Bartenders were great! Housekeeping though.... Didn't restock the fridge, nor was the fridge set at a good temp.
Resort is small so if you forget something in your room, don't have to walk a mile! We spoke with some guests that were in the Royal Service area, NOT worth it!
Booked a 5 hour deep sea fishing and reef snorkeling directly from the beach staff, well worth the $300! Always beach/pool chairs available.
NO nightlife at all though here, that is why it's a great place to relax, not to party.

Great place for swimming in the ocean and if you like to snorkel or dive this is the best place in Mexico we have been. This was our second visit as we felt this was a good place to take our adult children and grand-children. The island is very safe and if you just want to go off on your own to do some site-seeing you can without any concern. Rooms were clean, grounds were well kept. Food like most resorts was okay but I don't think we have been to any all-inclusive that we can say the food was outstanding. If you are only going for the food then don't go to an all-inclusive. We did go for supper off the resort for a change but all in all it is a great place to go.

Room Tip: If you don't like steps then request a main floor room, other than that it doesn't really ma...

It was all good but for the only criticism is that you CANNOT take naps in your room as the cleaning staff drag furniture across the marbled floors of all the rooms and it makes a terrible noise that made me want to wash my mouth out with buckshot.

Room Tip: Great all inclusive resort for money and I even considered buying into their property ownership. O...

The Occidental Grand Cozumel (OGC) keeps improving with age. We've been regular visitors there now for 6-7 years and enjoy it more each time. The last time we were there was just after the Cozumel Ironman Triathlon in late November, which we attended to cheer for our son. The OGC was booked until the Monday after the competition, so that's when we checked in.

We were greeted at the front desk by a beautiful, charming young lady named Claudia. As with all our past OGC check-ins, Claudia made us feel welcomed and at home right away. She did an excellent job of reviewing the routines and rules at the resort. We also greeted Ricardo, a gentleman we came to know on past visits - also the guy who handles specialty restaurant reservations. He remembered us, and also gave a warm welcome.

We were too early for check-in, but got our towel keys and headed for the beach. The grounds were as we remembered - lush tropical jungle environment with scrupulously clean walkways and fountains along the paths. The architecture with its Moorish influence is perfect for the surroundings, with each building set back from the main paths enough to be largely obscured by the foliage.

At the beachside lunch restaurant we saw some staff members from our past stays, including Adrian Sanchez, the food and beverage manager - a true gentleman, who greeted us with a smile and handshake. After a relaxing lunch and some refreshing cerveza, we checked into our room on the third floor, with balcony and a view overlooking the jungle and distant views of the ocean.

As always, our room was spacious and clean, thanks to the excellent maid service. Note that rooms on the first floor occasionally get a musty smell due to the high tropical humidity. This is usually easily fixed by running the air conditioning at a lower temperature for a few hours. We’ve never had this on the upper floors, but it’s never been a serious issue. If it is, the front desk will do all they can to move you to a better location.

The regular food at OGC is buffet style. It’s good, not great, but you should always be able to get a satisfying meal every time. Our favorite is the open air lunch restaurant on the beach. A great view, food’s always good (check for the coconut ice cream!), and it’s a great place to enjoy a leisurely, relaxed meal.

The breakfast restaurant always has a good omelet station (don’t forget to tip the cook), and plenty of fresh fruit, juices, yogurt, granola, and a variety of other foods.

The specialty restaurants are five star. Food, service, and atmosphere are all outstanding. We’ve always enjoyed them and look forward to each meal we get there. We were treated especially well our last night there. It was our 34th anniversary, and we received special treatment from the staff we had come to know over the years.

The cons of OGC: (1) the house wines are fair at best, but there is a wide variety of premium liquors and Corona beer; (2) at one spot along the main walkway, there is often a smell of sewer gas. It isn’t always present, but detracts from the tropical beauty of the grounds when it’s there.

The pros: (1) beautiful grounds; (2) exceptionally friendly and helpful employees, including the grounds keepers; (3) the in-room safes; (4) the “quiet” pool if you want solitude and minimal noise; (5) the overall relaxed and laid back atmosphere (even the main pool at the beach has relatively low-volume music); (6) great beach, good for miles of walking; (7) lots of activities for those interested in more than lying on the beach chairs; (8) good food at the buffet restaurants and GREAT food and service at the specialty restaurants; (9) interesting wildlife on the grounds (lots of birds, the turtles and small crocodile in the swamp, a family of peccaries that crossed the path in front of us on our way back to our room one night, plus the large resident and territorial barracuda in the swimming area); (10) for scuba divers, the on-site Palancar Dive operation, which I’ve used for years (though independent of OGC, they have the same level of service).

A couple other things: though we’ve never had a security issue at OGC, always be sure to check the patio doors to be sure they’re locked before leaving the room – don’t let your guard down just because you’re on vacation.

Also, don’t be shy about leaving a dollar or two for good waiter service, maids, bartenders, etc. They’re very appreciative of tips, and will return the favor with continued excellent service. So come equipped with sufficient dollar bills, it’s worth the expense.

We’d like to mention some of our worker friends: Bartenders Armondo, Victor, and Carlos; “Handsome” Allejandro, who keeps guests supplied with cerveza, other drinks, and some laughs on the beach; Adrian Sanchez and the restaurant workers (I believe one helpful waiter was named Arturo); and at the front desk, Claudia and Ricardo.

Allejandro even arranged to have a special anniversary cake baked for us at lunch one day. What a great experience. We look forward to returning to the OGC many times in the future.

Room Tip: Tell the agents what you want - 2 queen beds, 1 king, etc., ground floor, upper floor, near the beac...

Just got back from a wonderful week with the family. This was our second visit at this great hotel. Staff is always smiling and pleasant. We noticed a lot of the staff was same as 2 years ago, which is nice.

We opted for a ground floor room this time, which I recommend for anyone traveling with small children.

The food was good, we loved the beachside restaurant. The plate of nachos with salsa by the beach was memorable.

I completed my PADI referral with the great team at dive Palancar (on the resort). The whole team was very accommodating, knowledgeable and competent, the gear was ok and all worked well.

The only thing that was a negative was the occidental vacation club (time share) sales pitch.

Now, when do we go back?!?

When we arrived at the hotel we were escorted into a "sitting area" while the lady went and Got us champagne. ( I don't drink, and it took way to long). Then she slowly ( your in Mexico now, your going to do things OUR way) led us into a room where We got "slammed" by the time share guy, wanting to set up an appointment for us, to hard sell us the next day, this took twenty minutes, finally he relented and " released" us to our room. If I could have changed hotels right then I would have. There is no front desk to check in, you HAVE to go through this torture. When I asked the manager why we were subjugated to this, he just shrugged his shoulders and stated," we are in the business of selling time shares."

Room Tip: Check for mold before you unpack. A fellow divers wife was sick for four days, before they discovere...

Dear Jstbill,
Thank you for taking the time to share your experience with us. I am concerned and surprised by your feedback on our customer service as guest comfort is our priority. Please accept my sincere apologies for the discomfort the Vacation Club representatives, who are the timeshare people you mentioned, caused you. They team is supposed to be there to inform new guests of all the services and facilities available at the hotel and through Occidental Hotels & Resorts. I have met with the Vacation Club mManager so that we can look into how his team can best serve our guests and avoid any further inconveniences.
