“Hidden Gem in Cozumel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 30, 2009

My husband and I spent our annual diving vacation at Villas las Anclas this year after having spent a week at a not-so-great waterfront resort last year. We couldn't have been happier with our stay at our lovely villa. We researched a lot before the trip, and all of the shining reviews were right on in terms of the hospitality of the owners, Pedro and Eyal, the cleanliness of the rooms and property, the beauty of the property, the ease of making reservations, etc., etc.

It's a magical place just a few blocks down from the main square, but its lush garden courtyard makes you feel like you are in your own private retreat. I enjoyed an afternoon or two sitting among beautiful flowers and plants reading a book in the sunshine. The rooms are great for a couple or family. The large sitting room and kitchen are on the ground level, and the bedroom and bathroom are upstairs. Plenty of room to spread out, especially with all of our scuba gear! The rooms are nicely appointed and immaculately clean. We wondered if it would be a hassle to stay a couple blocks from the water since it was so easy last year to just walk out the other hotel's back door and hop on the boat....no way....it was incredibly easy to catch a cab to take us to the marina in the morning and return in the evening, and we were happy to be closer to restaurants and shops when we weren't diving (especially at night after a few margaritas!). Also helpful for divers was an area in the courtyard to rinse and hang the gear. This was a major plus. Overall, the property was quiet, beautiful, and clean. Villas las Anclas has many amenities upon request such as the in-room massages we received one afternoon from a really good massage therapist. I thought I'd died and gone to heaven.

While the hotel is an A+ in our book, what made this trip to Cozumel our best yet were the wonderful Pedro and Eyal, whose hospitality made us feel right at home, as if we had been friends for ages. We enjoyed getting to know these two interesting, intelligent, and fun people during our visit and were sad to say goodbye at the end of our week. It is true that people make a place, and Villas las Anclas is no exception.

Villas las Anclas has it all--beauty, charm, great location, fabulous owners with many great recommendations (I still dream about dinner at Sorrisi around the corner as well as Le Bistro), convenience for diving, cleanliness, safety, and comfort. I can't think of anything that wasn't perfect about it and would recommend it highly to anyone. We'll be back next year!

After reading about the safe, laid-back atmosphere and great local restaurants, we wanted to stay in a small downtown hotel, rather than an all inclusive. We chose Villas Las Anclas after reading reviews from previous guests. The hotel is a block from the ocean and a block from the town square, so the location is perfect. Pedro and Eyul treated us like old friends and Eyul walked me to a dive shop nearby to get me set up for the weeks diving. The loft apartment was clean, comfortable and much more spacious than a typical hotel room and had everything we needed. We bought fruit, bread, meat and cheese at a local store for our breakfast and lunch and ate dinner at several of the local restaurants.
One of the best parts of our stay was visiting with the other guests over a cold drink in the courtyard. They gave us lots of advice about diving and and included us for dinner at the local restaurants. We felt like we made new friends who we want to see again.

This was our third time in Cozumel, and we absolutely loved Las Anclas. It was far better than any place we stayed. The Villa had gorgeous gardens where we could visit with other guests, or have a cocktail before going to dinner. Our suite was lovely, and had everything we needed, including a mini fridge, microwave, coffeemaker (with complimentary coffee), dishes, iron, cable TV … you name it. Having a daily housekeeper also was a big plus, and Merci did a wonderful job. With a loft-style layout, it was a lot of space for the two of us.

The location was superb. It was within walking distance of numerous dive shops and was only a block from the dive pier where my husband met his boat in the mornings. We also found lots of excellent local restaurants close by. Being within walking distance to everything (Mega, shopping, ferry, and Zermatt’s Bakery) was fantastic.

We can’t say enough good things about the owners and hosts, Pedro and Eyal. It was comforting to know they lived on the premises, and they always were available if we needed anything or had questions about the area. Thanks to them, we had a wonderful time in Cozumel. We highly recommend Las Anclas to anyone who wants to stay in a quiet, charming suite in town and yet be close to all San Miguel offers.

When my wife and I began planning our next trip to Cozumel, we read good comments about Villas Las Anclas, near the downtown Plaza. We’d always stayed at the big resorts south of town and close to prime dive sites, and weren’t sure about this place. My wife is a light sleeper so quiet is a must, and we both hate long boat rides to the dive sites. But we also dislike feeling locked in at the all-inclusives – locked in both by distance to downtown and by the fact that we’ve already paid for it.

In emails, Pedro continuously assured us that noise and getting to the prime dive sites would be no problem. But isn’t that what they all say? We were still a little nervous when we got out of our cab in front of Villas Las Anclas for our week stay in the heart of downtown. Then Pedro and Eyal picked up our suitcases at the door, carried them to our room, gave us the key, and said, “Make yourselves comfortable. We’ll take care of the paperwork later.” We quickly found we loved our little condo.

While the big all-inclusive resorts have spectacular views and lots of activities, Villas Las Anclas is like visiting the home of old friends, friends like Pedro and Eyal. Their hotel, like an extension of their home, is extremely comfortable and relaxing. Artwork decorates the rooms and the courtyard. The rooms are very inviting, neat and well maintained.

Our fear that “downtown” and “quiet” were incompatible proved untrue – at least at Villas Las Anclas. Our upstairs bedroom loft was both quiet and comfortable. Noise was a non-issue. And our concern with getting to dive sites likewise proved unfounded. Cozumel is all about diving, with multiple dive shops on every block – all striving to stay alive by providing better service. With help from Pedro and Eyal, we hooked up with one that maintained a boat well south of town. With a quick $5 taxi ride we got to the boat and arrived shortly afterward at Palancar and other great sites.

The mini-kitchen in our condo, and the convenience of nearby grocery stores, enabled us to eat at home when we chose. When we wanted to go out, there were scores of good-quality, low-cost restaurants nearby.

Being downtown was the greatest treat. Sure, at the all-inclusives you get to choose from many activities that you’ve already paid for, but downtown we had the freedom to choose from a huge multiple of those activities, and we just paid for those we used. With our many walks we got to know the inland part of the city where the locals live and work, and found some great stores and restaurants. And we often found live entertainment, much of it free, during our strolls through the plaza.

After having now stayed in several of Cozumel’s big resorts and the little Villas Las Anclas, Las Anclas is the clear winner. Thank you, Pedro and Eyal, for letting us enjoy the comfort of your home.

Las Anclas is a very distinctive small hotel in downtown San Miguel. It is small - just eleven units or so around a small courtyard. Most of the guests are divers who return year after year. The rooms are duplex loft apartments with a small kitchen, dining area, and queen size bed in tshe loft. The units are spacious, feel extremely open, and are filled with light. Each one looks out onto a small individually designed garden. They really are architectural gems. Pedro and Ail are wonderful hosts and combine a perfect balance of attention and privacy. There is always a welcoming group of guests in the courtyard and is a wonderful place to make friends. I can't recommend it enough.

We visited Cozumel for the first time and stayed at Villas Las Anclas. VLA is a little oasis in the heart of downtown... steps from the water, the plaza, and restaurants. Our room was great, clean, very bright and open. The owners were wonderful...In short, we cannot wait to come back, stay at VLA....and relax.

We picked Villa Las Anclas based on recommendations from this site and we are really happy we did so. The hotel is a hidden gem in the heart of Cozumel.

Our two story Mexican style villa was neat, comfortable and stylish. The small kitchen was well equipped and we had unlimited supply of fresh bottled water. The rooms were serviced daily and each time we found a new towel animal on our bed. The bathroom looked like it was recently remodeled and the water pressure was very good (a luxury not many Mexican hotels have).

What we liked best about Villa Las Anclas is the personal service we were given from the owners, Pedro and Eyal. They were always eager to give us an advice or a recommendation and were very attentive to all of our needs.
We will defiantly be staying there again on our next visit.
