We traded an RCI for this property. The furnishings were old, musty and unsuitable for a unit that alledgedly sleeps eight people. The partial kitchen was not well stocked, lacking things like a spatula, and even paper towels. Televison channels were limited, and with one restaurant--and no snack bar--dining options were limited.
Thing is, we didn't hate this place. As rundown as the units are, the views of the cruise ships just yards away were quite interesting, and the pool and small beach area were acceptable. The property has a decent lit tennis court, and most of the staff were accommodating. The housekeepers are particularly pleasant. Just wish they'd invest in new furniture and fixtures. I admit the murcphy bed seemed much more comfortable than the usual sofa beds found in other properties.
There aren't any restaurants in walking distance, but for $6, a taxi to downtown restaurants, is very convenient, and much easier than dealing with traffic and parking.

Room Tip: Beg for rooms in the new tower.

My husband & I spent one week in La Ceiba at the beginning of March - it was the first time we'd stayed on Cozumel. The journey over on the ferry was very interesting as it was rather windy and the sea very choppy! We were almost blown into the hotel to be met by the very friendly smile of Rocia on the front desk.

At first, we were unsure what to make of the hotel as it's older and unlike some of the other El Cid properties. We are El Cid members and the longer we stayed, the more we liked it because it's smaller and more intimate. The staff is what makes this hotel so enjoyable - we received wonderful service from so many people whose names we can't remember, but Bibionca & Rocia on the front desk, David in Guest Services, his lovely wife (who's name we can't remember we're sorry to say), & Jennifer, are delightful people.

Our one bedroom suite in the tower was kept spotless, and even though there was a water leak from the room above we had quick service to check it out and it did not inconvenience us as there were two bathrooms in the suite. We really enjoyed watching the cruise ships come and go and the view from our balcony was perfect for us. I even enjoyed using the stairs to get to and from our room - a great form of exercise! We loved snorkelling in front of the hotel but be warned - don't hang onto the rope as you'll be stung by tiny jellyfish! I found out the hard way but staff at the dive shop sprayed vinegar on my arms and it helped take away the sting! We had a wonderful, relaxing time at La Ceiba and hopefully we'll be back next year!

We weren't given the room that we paid for. We had no kitchenette and no view. I asked the front desk for a different room and the woman rudely told me that's what I'd paid for. I wrote to reservations and showed them that I was supposed to have an oceanview room with kitchenette and would like to be moved the next day, and no one wrote me back. I took my printed reservation to the front desk the next morning and was told that the hotel was full, when I could see that it was not. Very rude front desk woman.

The rest of the staff is very friendly and helpful though.

The room had a broken air conditioner. It shot cold air, but had no cover, so we couldn't adjust the angle and it blew straight onto the bed.

The food in the restaurant was good and the staff is very attentive and friendly.

There's snorkeling and diving right in front of the hotel, which is a plus.

They charged too much on my mastercard. I'm checking out today, so hopefully that gets resolved.

While the staff is very nice the hotel itself is not that great! We were told we'd have a 2 bedrm suite and we got 3 separate rooms along a hallway. The living room/kitchen was by itself. The bedroom with a king bed was in the next separate room and then a 2 bed room was by itself. There's no AC in the bathroom nor was there a ventilation fan. There are sewage pipes above the bamboo ceiling and every time someone upstairs flushes or lets water out of a drain it's very loud. Also it smelled like sewage sometimes. The tv only gets a few channels and most are in Spanish. There's 1 or 2 in English that only show reruns. The VIP lounge is a tiny little sorry excuse for a lounge. The internet is hit and miss most of the time. The 2 computers in the tiny "business lounge" didn't always work. One night it was very windy and the sliding door rattled back and forth and slowly opened about an inch. The beds are hard as a rock! We're VIP members who paid the AI fee and yet we had to wait after every meal for the waiter to bring us a check to sign. We didn't have to do that at other El Cid resorts. The cruise ships are annoying when they dock at 6:30 or 7 and blow their horns. Some make announcements on their speakers that can probably be heard miles away! There's nothing to do close by. If you want to shop you have to take a taxi 3 miles to town. Obviously we won't be back!

Room Tip: Get a room on a higher floor so you can see over the ships. Actually just get a room somewhere else!

Nearly every year for about 25-30 years we have been coming to El Cid La Ceiba. It is small and intimate. If you like lots of partying and commotion, this is not the place for you. This is like coming home and being comfortable. We love the people. The staff is amazing; and they treat you with royalty when they get acquainted with you.
The food at the restaurant is always delicious. We eat most of our meals right there overlooking the ocean just a couple feet in front of our table.
Cruise ships dock right near the hotel; and they are interesting to watch. We love cruising; so watching them is so fun for us. We never become annoyed with them.
La Ceiba is about 3 miles from town, so you can get good exercise if you care to run or walk. There's always a taxi ready to assist if you tire out.
Our special thanks always go to Esther...my favorite employee...and Alberto...both who have been there for 25 years! We just met the new manager this time...he was very personable..but we did miss Salvador. We shall continue to return.

Room Tip: We always want to stay in the tower on a higher level so we can see way out in the ocean. But many...

What a great, fun place El Cid La Ceiba turned out to be! We honestly had a bit of trepidation heading into our stay, as all-inclusive properties can be hit-or-miss – this was very definitely a hit. What really helped our stay here was our mindset. If you expect a homogenized or Americanized experience here, you’ll probably be disappointed, but that is by no means a backhanded compliment. I’ll give an example…our first morning there, my wife ordered a waffle at breakfast and frankly she didn’t particularly like it. I ordered a local breakfast dish - huevos motuleños, and it was outstanding! That was our “ah-ha moment.” Instead of trying to make the El Cid into the Hyatt, let’s let them do what they do best. In hindsight it seems so simple, but it’s easy to fall into the trap of ordering a pizza and expecting it to be like your favorite local place 2 blocks from home. We also enjoyed the tequila (something I also enjoy north of the border), and became particularly enamored with the mestizas and quesadillas at lunchtime. My last food comment – don’t miss the evening cookout they do – awesome mole chicken, and the chefs had fun putting my churros on the grill to heat them up!
The pool & hot tub are both fun, and snorkeling on their beach in front of the restaurant is great if you’re not afraid of fish…we were laughing our a**es off while snorkeling there. The hotel manager Andres is just a great guy and a real gentleman. While waiting to check in, he came over to say hello and I complimented his great follow up on tripadvisor reviews. Not certain if our encounter had anything to do with our room, but we ended up on a higher floor in a suite that was…wait for it...sweet. The rooms are perfect for the location and typically Mexican – Saltillo tile throughout with comfortable furnishings that were appropriate for the hotel’s ocean front location.
We didn’t love the cruise ship traffic disturbing our sunsets, but between our great scuba adventures and El Cid’s ability to help us unplug & unwind, even the cruise ships became “no problema.” Although we don’t have a tendency to return to places (so many new things to discover in this world), one place we will certainly visit again is El Cid La Ceiba.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, choose something higher as there's a fair amount of activity here...

Our helper GUADELIA was great. She came daily to clean our unit and she did a great job. Not only did she clean she left the place with some artistic creation - our towels which she managed to transform into some attractive animals.

Another person who was very helpful was MARIA at the front desk. She was always helpful and always had a smile.

Room Tip: Take ear plugs if you are a light sleeper!
