“Another great stay at El Cid”

This hotel is older, a little worn and very quiet. But it fits our needs perfectly. It's our 4th stay and we keep coming back. The rooms have cooking facilities with a small refridgerator, microwave and a small stove. Dishes are provided. This makes it nice because you can do a small amount of cooking in the room and don't feel like you have to eat out at every meal.

The hotel is a little worn but very clean. Maid service is excellent. The rooms are dated and desperately need new TV's, furniture and linens. WiFi service in the hotel is spotty which needs to be imporoved. Restaurant on site has good food at reasonable prices. Snorkeling in front of the hotel is quite good. Pool and hot tub are great. Waiter service on the beach area is not the best. Front desk people and doorman are helpful.

There are a few good restaurants near the hotel but we like to venture out and explore with the locals. The spa and it's services are wonderful!

This hotel just got a new manager this week so maybe things will improve. A little updating would help a lot.

If you want a hotel that is quiet, laid back and clean this is the place for you especially if the decor does not matter to you. Will will be back.

We got the "freebie" stay at El Cid for buying 2 other trips...We haven't decided if we will do an exchange there or do one at the Park Royal. By just looking at the two it would be a no brainer but the only thing that would make me go back to El Cid is sitting on the pier or at waterside in the restaurant for breakfast. The beach section of Park Royal was dark at night...I can sit by a pool here at home.
I don't know what the tower rooms look like but our room was shall we say basic and clean and utterly blah and bland. It's not like we spent tons of time in the room...not really enough sleeping either but let's say we could do an HGTV make-over and it wouldn't hurt things at all. For a country that explodes in glorious color, one pastel palm print just doesn't quite cut it.
There was a 2 burner cook top, fridge, dishes and all that good stuff plus a toaster, blender, coffee maker and microwave. I don't believe in cooking when we're on vacation....coffee and tea-making is it!

The restaurant was pretty good, we only ate there for rainy dinners and a couple of breakfasts...you can't beat Nutella crepes! There was a pizza place advertised but it wasn't open, ditto another bar.
I think someone has said its best asset is the staff and we agree. Everyone was so helpful and friendly. We had a couple early morning taxis to take and we had no problems...they took very good care of us! I think we did disappoint as we had all our trips planned through other sources...
As for snorkeling there's probably better places with more coral, etc but for the new ones we were quite happy with our 3 ventures. It wasn't too rough and there were plenty of fish to go around for the sometimes dozen or more snorkelers out at one time.
There is a shop just outside the doors of the hotel, water, soda, sweets, over-priced batteries you forgot....but it is there. There's also 2 ATMs, one pesos and one USD....had no problems with outrageous fees as I've read about here on the forum.
I hate to judge the El Cid on such a silly basis as lack of decorating but color is kinda expected in Mexico don't you think? I really think tho it will be sitting on the pier at night that will seal it.... We will make up our minds --will go to Cancun before going back to Cozumel. Maybe they will take the comments I left seriously and go shopping in the market...or give us a room for a week and a budget and I will do it myself! Woo hoo!

We just returned from a week at the El Cid La Ceiba Beach Hotel. This was our first trip to Cozumel and to Mexico and we stayed at the El Cid using a promotion from RCI Cruises rather than through a choice. The key to any resort is the staff and I have to give a big thumbs-up for the staff of the El Cid. Every member of the staff that I interacted with did their best to make sure I was fully satisfied. The second greatest asset of this hotel is its beach, pools, and hot tub. We also enjoyed the snorkeling right off the beach. We may be unusual, but we tend to travel hard and schedule things to do for every day rather than spend days on the beach. Once we arrived, we found that the hotel had a full menu of things to do on the island or on the mainland. I wish they had taken the opportunity to contact us sometime after we made our reservations in November rather than waiting until we checked in to invite us to sit down and discuss all the opportunities. I expected an invite to attend a sales pitch and was pleasantly surprised when there was no pressure to attend. The invite was made, I turned it down, and that was it. My disappointment with the hotel had to do with the facilities. Overall, while it was evident that the hotel tried to keep things clean, the hotel is due a major renovation. Not only is everything somewhat tired, but for a Mexican island resort, the overall design and decoration is severely lacking. The hotel advertises two restaurants and three bars. While we were there, only the main restaurant and its attached bar were in operations. The Lobby Bar appeared to have been closed for a long time and while the pizza restaurant over on the terrace appeared to have been operated recently, it was not in operation for us. Would we return to the El Cid - not really sure. We would certainly look at recent reviews to see if they had improved the facilities before making the decision.

Room Tip: The low rise section has three floors with no elevators.

Dear señores, after reading your comments I must tell you that we will be waiting for you very soon, we are working on improving our services, our main goal is that everybody has a great time here with us, we are very pleased with our staff, we think they are the best and we really think they are, many people love the way our hotel looks like however, we will take notes of your comments, and I must agree with you about our snorkeling area, it`s amazing, colorful fish, coral, the view, the visibility, I invite everybody to try el cid la ceiba, señores, come back soon, we have some margaritas waiting for you, hasta pronto!!!

We are El Cid Vacation Club "owners." First time staying at La Ceiba. We arrived early, well before the 4 pm check-in, and waited about 45 minutes for the first of our 2 connected rooms to be finished and we could go up. The second room was done almost immediately after. We were in the low rise section, second floor. The rooms were nice, and kept clean throughout our stay, although on our first day the maid only cleaned one of the 2 rooms. Not a big deal for us, but odd. We tipped the maid $4-5 each day.
TV channels were not consistently clear, depending on the channel and which TV. The televisions are in need of upgrade and replacement. We found the beds comfortable, even the murphy pull down bed was not bad.
We only ate in the El Cid restaurant once, for the breakfast buffet, which was quite good. Another couple we met really enjoyed the Tuesday night "BBQ."
Pizza was disappointing, not very hot or crisp. Beach service was the biggest disappointment, being slow slow slow. Even without the all inclusive, which meant they got tips, it was always a long time between getting one drink and orderig the other, and the 2 times we ordered food (nachos, fries) they took well over 20 minutes each, and were barely warm.
Room service ordered once and was fast and hot.
Front desk was fairly good but the answer to most questions depended on who was there at the time...ID may or may not be needed for ping pong paddles, night tennis $15 or $10 an hour, etc.
We enjoyed watching the cruise ships come and go, but be aware that the ships are just off the left side of the hotel property, only several hundred yards away. Super clear water right off the breakers with a lot of fish.

We went through the "update" promo for the Vacation Club and all was well until we asked about a minimum upgrade if we wanted to move up to some of the newer benefits. We were first given a price and benefits package, then when "Art" came over, he told us we wold not get all the benefits promised, and would have to pay 50% more than we were quoted. Well, that ruined their chance of any sales!

The resort grounds are kept up nicely, but the overall feel is that the place is a little tired and needs someone to kick it in the butt. We were told that a new manager was arriving to take charge.

One other thing - the gym closed 2 weeks ago and no one informed us. They are building a new one, but that didn't help us this trip.

Dove 2 days with Jeremy of Living Underwater. Small but well kept and fast boat, and he sees everything!

I stayed here with 2 friends and our goal was to get certified in scuba diving. The Babieca Dive Center in resort was excellent but this is only excellent thing in there. There is no sand beach (if you do not count 70 feet wide artificial one), snorkeling from the hotel property is average, food bad, tequila cheap, only one beer on tap …. I had a booking for my whole family but I canceled it because I can imagine how boring would it be for my kids to stay here. Pool is old and small and no kids playground.

Room Tip: Top floor in high-rise - 12th floor.

We have been to El Cid La Ceiba Beach Hotel four times now. We always have a great time. Upon check-in, we were not happy with the location of our room and Esther immediately gave us three other options. Great Customer Service! The on-site restaurant, La Chopa is wonderful and by the end of the week all the servers are your friends. The manager Crisanto does not miss a thing. One young waiter, Juan remembered us from last year and remembered that my husband was a firefighter.

They have a small heated pool and a small man-made beach. There are steps into the ocean where you will find hundreds of fish. We take in bread or crackers to attract them. There is also a small airplane sunk in the bay that you can snorkel around. The cruise ships dock just south of the resort and yes, sometimes they partially block your view, but we find it interesting to see all the activity,

Our only complaint was that they have closed their small fitness center. The front desk did reimburse my husband for a taxi ride and a day membership to a gym in town. I hope they consider replacing the on-site facility. We will definately see our friends next year.

We stayed here the first week of April with beautiful weather. Our visit was a time-share trade via RCI and we ended up on the 11th floor of the tower in a nice one-bedroom suite. The view is excellent of the ocean and up the waterfront road into downtown. Yes, there are cruise ships docked right in front of you with up to four ships in port. Yes, almost every day there are four but all seemed to leave by 5PM. None on Sunday. Yes, the road out front of the hotel is packed with cruise people and taxis. It didn't really bother us but you need to realize that cruise ships are the life blood of Cozumel and, it turns out, are needed by El Cid La Ceiba. We called them day trippers and they pretty well took over the beach and pool areas because the price the hotel charged them to spend the day using the hotel facilities is fairly inexpensive. We only had one bad experience and that was the day before check out when we laid our our hotel-issued beach towels and our "gear" then took a dip in the pool. When we got out, someone had taken our towels, moved our stuff off our lounge chair and sat in it. We talked to them but they claimed someone else had taken our towels and "emptied" our lounge chair so they took it over. Went inside to complain to the desk people and was simply told there would be a $40 charge for our "lost" towels. After some arguing they replaced our towels but said we couldn't "lose" them again. All during out stay we talked to the day trippers from the cruise lines and most were very personable. However, others were obviously not from America or Mexico and yelled, created distractions, and were generally obnoxious. Nobody we met that were staying at the hotel caused any issues. Other than wait staff and one roaming employee that could have been security, there were no other employees watching the beach or pool area.

The restaurant and bar were very good and the serving staff were really outstanding. Service was prompt and friendly. They would grab some bread or tortillas and toss them into the water
right from the railing in the restaurant so the guests (and kids) could watch the fish swim up and feed. The restaurant (La Chopa) is named after the blue fish that feed there. They have a night where they grill out, another buffet night of Mexican specialties, and a wood-fired pizza oven right out in the open. Good pizza! The have a daily breakfast buffet that we used more than we wanted to not because we didn't have other choices but to go anywhere else involved a $7 taxi ride one way. If you didn't mind a 3 mile walk, you could leave El Cid for another restaurant but we like the food there.

Our room had a kitchenette with a small refrigerator, two-burner stove, and microwave but we don't cook on vacation. The refrigerator kept bottled water cold, leftover pizza, and other beverages. There is a little store right outside the entrance to buy snacks and beverages but a Mega grocery is a few miles away for hardy chefs. We had a problem twice with no water coming out of the taps but it only happened for about 15 minutes so it may have been a glitch; after all we were on the 11th floor. Daily maid service and it was spotless. Air conditioning units are above the kitchenette and in the bedroom. We had two full baths, a king bed, and a Murphy unit in the living room that we had no use for. Nice, large TVs in the bedroom and living room along with TWO balconies. If we decided to visit Cozumel again we wouldn't hesitate to visit El Cid La Ceiba but you need to keep in mind the large number of day trippers from the daily cruise ships can fill the beach and pool area for a chunk of the day.

Room Tip: Get the tower rooms. Ours had a great view of the ocean so I'm sure the others in the tower do...
