Grand Park Royal Cozumel
Ranked #15 of 52 Hotels in Cozumel
Reviewed April 8, 2013

Just returned from a week at the Park Royal with a large family group ages 12-50 and had a wonderful stay. The resort is not so large that you cannot find people in your group and the staff are all very friendy and helpful.
The grounds are very nice and well kept. The sidewalks are hard to walk on with anything but flats and I would not bring elderly or wheelchair bound people here because of the coral sidewalks. They do stay cool and are nice to look at though.
Check in was a little painful. We got all our rooms on the same floor but had requested a higher floor and got the first floor. We did not make a fuss as at least our rooms were together. Three of our rooms were ready at 3:00 and one of our rooms was not ready until 4;30 and I'm not sure why. Housekeeping did an excellent job everyday and our rooms were always clean by at least 2 pm. The shower is amazing and the beds(most are two double which we pushed together) are firm. There is plenty of closet space and three drawers. The TV is adequate and the balcony seats two. We loved our room except for no view.
We paid the $2/day safe fee as last year my phone was stolen in the Bahamas in our room when it was out of the safe. There is a $5/day fee to use the fitness room which I was unaware of before we booked. I don't mind being nickel and dimed as much if I am prepared in advance. Since it was not on the website I wasn't prepared so I did not use the fitness room. My daughter did one day.
One thing that I did do is bring tennis rackets as the website said their were lighted tennis courts. When we went to find the courts a worker there said that the courts were no longer and the theater was there is place of it?! Another suprise. So we did a little jogging and walking outside the resort for some exercise as well as snorkeling right out in front of the resort to work off some of the wonderful meals.
We ate twice at each restaurant(Italian and Mexican). I enjoyed both. The coconut grouper at the Mexican was wonderful. We enjoyed the buffets also. My picky teen did not enjoy the food as much but that's her loss.
There was plenty of activities to keep you busy or you could just lounge all day if you wished to do so. It was really busy when we first got their-I think it was Mexican spring break, but by the time we checked out on April 7, the resort wasn't full. When it was full, there wasn't a chair to be had after 8 AM that wasn't in full sun. By the last day you had your pick of loungers at the beach and pool. I would recommend that they get more loungers for the busier times and maybe some portable umbrellas. The pools at the beach are very nice and the bartenders are wonderful especially Luis. We brought lots of $1's and $5's and tipped throughout our stay.
Thank you Park Royal for making our stay in Cozumel so enjoyable!

Wife, two kids, 5 grandkids, several other couples and I spent two wonderful weeks at Park Royal in March. This is an annual trip for us and, while we've stayed at most of the all-inclusive resorts on the island, we love Park Royal and have visited annually for the last 7-8 years. The facility is wonderful- spotless, professional and friendly staff, and always looking for ways to make the stay better. Food, while not 5-star calibre, is great and everyone who travels with us just loves the place. Our visits routinely include a day (or more) of shopping, a trip around the island, and a round or two of golf. This year was no different. We did find the pools a little cool for us older travelers but the kids loved it. Already planning our visit for 2014, this time we're looking at going in April.

Room Tip: Although based on availability at check-in, request a room at or above level 5. This wlll provide a...

Just returning from a week at the Park Royal Cozumel. It was spring break, the hotel was full and didn't feel crowded. It was a very good all-inclusive experience.

The Pro's:
-The grounds are immaculate.
-The food is pretty good for an all inclusive
-The price is very reasonable
-The rooms are modern, clean.
-The Staff is very friendly and wants to please
-Quality Snorkeling starting hip deep (many fish varieties)
-Good drinks
-3 Swim up bars (One each pool)
-Snack bar food
-Bell Staff was quick and efficient
-Unique design and use of space. Infinity pools, tunnel under road.

Opportunities for improvement:
-Check in process. We realize that check in is in the late afternoon, but have some organization at the desk. There is no line or direction. Could be fixed very easily.
-A little more for kids to eat at the main buffet. It is available at the snack bar, but we would end up feeding our 6 year old at the snack bar then go to lunch.
-Kids club was nice, but could use more supervision. They host 5-12 years. If the staff member was leading a craft, no one was really watching over the slide/pool area.

Room Tip: Bring water shoes and you can snorkel hip deep Reserve chairs early

We stayed a week at the Park Royal March 16 - 23. We lucked out and the weather was incredible!!! The resort is a good location in relation to the airport (however, being such a small island, I'm sure they all are). Check in ran smooth (no king beds and even though I requested a higher floor we were given the 3rd floor), you are offered use of the safe for $2/day, we declined - really no need as far as I'm concerned. The room was fine, nothing special but who cares, you're not supposed to be spending time in the room anyway! The shower water was cold most days but if you let the water run for a few minutes prior to entering, that helped. No iron and no ironing board - you need to request one and when I did the ironing boards were all being used and the iron they sent up was broken lol but we made due. The grounds were lovely and the entire resort appeared very clean. The staff were very nice and always helpful. The food was good - not great but very edible and some nice surprises throughout the week. The a la carte restaurants were not so good but really, it didn't matter. We tried both the Italian and the Mexican and neither impressed us. The wait staff was great but the food really wasn't good...at least what we ordered. My fish wasn't cook (very wet and slimy) and everything seemed super salty. Again, in the big scheme of things, we didn't really care b/c we could always find something at the buffet that was quite nice. AND, we ate lunch and supper at Pescaderia San Carlos as often as we could!!! If you like seafood, you MUST try this little local restaurant. It's a fish market in the front and a little garden restaurant in the back. Very local feel - no where near all the tourist places. I'm telling you, you will not be disappointed. AWESOME cheviche (sp?) and the grooper is fantastic - he does it a number of different ways. The seafood soup is crazy good - incredible. So fresh you've never had anything like it. And the prices are terrific. We had cheviche, seafood soup, the grooper 4 beers and all for $28!!! Tell the taxi driver you want to go to 50 Bis between 3 and 5 calle - it should be a $7 cab ride and if you ask them to come back at a specific time they will. Taxi's charge you usually 7-8 dollars to town and add $$ depending on the size of your group. Back to the resort.....the swimming was great. Nice beach area - lots of fish for snorkeling. The fish are so plentiful that you don't even need snorkeling gear, just wade out and you'll see them! The infinity pools were very nice. Bars provided good service. Drinks were good - we drank beer and gin and tonic (they had to open little bottles of tonic for each drink so they were always fresh). The tequila was terrible lol! As one bartender said "diesel fuel". We've stayed at resorts that offered the good stuff...this resort does not. You will be approached to do a time share tour - we did it, spent an hour of our time and got a free jeep rental, tickets to Punta Sur (highly recommend - the bluest water ever!!) and San Gervasio - Mayan Ruins (sp?), a bottle of tequila and 2 t-shirts so well worth it BUT, you do need to know how to say no or you'll be there much, much longer like a number of other people we talked to were (don't ask questions and don't say maybe you'll think about it - a simple not for you and you may have to repeat yourself). Driving around isn't bad at all. It's a bit hairy in the downtown area however, as soon as you get going on your trip around the island it's a breeze. You can't get lost - the island is only 32 km long and 9km wide - one main road takes you everywhere! We loved Cozumel so much, we will def. be back. We would stay at the Park Royal again if the price were right but also open to trying new places. If you've booked your trip to stay here or are thinking about it, you can't go wrong!

Room Tip: Request higher floors for a better view.

We loved The Park Royal! The staff is wonderful! The food is good! The drinks plentiful! Nice snorkeling (free for 1 hour) . Yes, the pools and hot tubs are not so warm... who cares... you are in paradise! We came home and are already planning out next trip there in 2 months. The Mexican Restaurant (Reservations needed- go at 11:40 a.m and stand in line-worth the wait!) Restaurant is good, Italian so-so but the buffet has great choices and varieties. The drinks are awesome... Remember to tip a few bucks... they don't make much $ per day and really take care of you with tips... The rooms are so clean and nicely updated. It's $2 a day for the safe- big deal! If you can't afford $2 you shouldn't be on vacation. The wifi is $15 a day which was the only downer. The gym costs $ unless you are a member but not sure it's a lot.... good massages too and reasonable.I highly recommend Park Royal Cozumel.

We just got back from a 5 night stay at Park Royal. We had a great time and thanks to the other reviewers we had a pretty good idea of what to expect. It’s a nice mid-range all-inclusive with good snorkeling and nice resort grounds. It is clean and well maintained.

Rooms: The rooms are clean, modern and uncluttered. We had two beds and there is a chair in the corner, small desk/bench, TV armoire with drawers one sink vanity, closet with good hanging space, few shelves and safe. Our toilet/shower area was very tight and we are not a fan of rainshowers. The shower did have a bench. We were in the separate tower on the 8th floor and had an awesome view. Our view was towards the north, so although we could see the tail end of cruise ships, they didn’t block the view at all. The beds are firm, we like firm beds and they had a bigger firm pillow in closet. The hotel does have all marble/tile floors so you could hear when neighbors left rooms if they let doors slam. People, its not difficult to close doors more gently!

Pools/beaches: 3 pools, all with swim up bars. The main pool has plenty of shady areas as well as some quiet areas. The beach pools have great views and easy access to snorkel. The beach is a small cove, but pretty and calm for kids and to enter for snorkeling. The prime chairs are taken early, anything on the beach or near beach pools with palapas are gone by 8 am. Many of the chairs people drop towel and book or bag very early and then go back to bed or breakfast (or both) because we saw chairs with towels but no people for 1-2 hours or longer. We got up early (7:30) one day and got two chairs with palapa near beach volleyball court. Another day we got there around 8:30 and got two chairs on the deck in front of the main beach pool, literally steps from the ocean and we could drop off deck into water to snorkel. One day we got chairs in quiet area by the main pool, along the lay river. Nice spot, just around corner from swim up bar and plenty of shade, easy to hope into pool for sun. The pools were a little cold, hot tubs very cold. They also had a kid’s area near the main pool with wading pool, fort and water slide. Probably good for kids about 4-8.

Restaurants: we can only comment on the main buffet (La Veranda), as the Italian and Mexican restaurants (open for dinner only) had people lined up by 11:45 am, just to start making reservations which start at noon. By 12:15, early reservations are gone and since we were trying to get up early we chose to either eat at buffet or in town. Breakfast was good, fruit, yogurt, oatmeal, cereals, toast, baked goods, pancakes, eggs, french toast, potatoes, omelette station, juices, etc. For lunch they had lunch meat, rice, green salad, pasta salad, beef, chicken and fish dishes. They also had a “station” for lunch and dinner based on the theme, like pasta station for Italian night, carving station for international night. We thought breakfasts were the best, lunch and dinner weren’t bad but could have been more creative. We ended up going off the grounds for a few meals (Wet Wendys, Jeanies, Coconuts, Playa Corona) just for variety and to see the island.

Bars: They have 3 swim up bars, lower lobby bar and bar near amphitheater during shows. The lower lobby and pool pars have frozen drink machines with pina colada and strawberry daiquiris. They also have draft beer and cocktails. No top shelf liquor but enough to make decent cocktails. The sports bar is pretty dead every night. It’s dark, cold, not comfortable. Honestly they should transform it into a piano lounge or karaoke bar. The lower lobby bar (Chac Mool) is the happening spot in the evenings as there are chairs scattered down in that area and it’s fun to see people coming and going.

Staff: Very friendly and efficient. You would almost always get a smile and “hola” when passing or approaching staff. From front desk to bellstaff to bartenders and cleaning and landscaping staff, they work hard and were friendly and helpful. Everyone spoke at least adequate to perfect English (which is great because our Spanish is terrible).

Entertainment/activities: They have activities all day with morning yoga and aquastretching to friendship bracelets to tequila tasting and guacamole making. In the evenings they have shows in the amphitheater which ranged from ok to great. The live band was really good and the crowd got into it. The lobby bar (lower level) tends to be the most popular area for people to congregate before and after dinner. The people watching is great!! Most people hang out here before/after dinner and before/after the shows (of before they taxi into town).

Check-in/Checkout: Pretty painless and quick. It can get busy when large groups arrive, but lobby has comfortable chairs and they are happy to bring you cold drinks. We got there early around 2 and they said room would be ready around 4:30. They took our luggage and gave us wristbands and we decided to explore the resort. It was even more compact then we expected we saw the whole resort in 20 minutes. So then we walked next door to Royal shops mall, got some pesos in the bank atm there and then walked to Ernestos for cold drink and free wifi to let everyone know we arrived. We were back after 4:30 and our room was ready. Check-out was easy, bellstaff got our luggage within 10 minutes of our call, check-out was less than 10 minutes at front desk and taxi to airport was quick.

Amenities/grounds: The landscaping is lush and tropical. They also have a “super deli” that is a small convenience store with beer, liquor, sodas, snacks, cookies, etc. for sale (although they ask you not to bring food into rooms). Very reasonable for a hotel store and you could get stuff if you wanted to rent a car and see the island. The walkways are a little rough, just bring proper shoes and sandals. Ladies with high heels tended to stumble.

Thanks to TA peeps, we walked off airport grounds to rotary and got taxi for $12usd. I guaranty people were still getting shared van tickets and piling into vans while we were on our way. Taxi back from resort was easy and quick, 10-15 minutes.

Overall we would recommend Park Royal as the pros outweigh the cons. Our priorities were snorkeling, clean, modern rooms and good pools and it ticked all boxes.

Pros:
1. Good snorkeling onsite
2. Clean, modern rooms
3. Multiple pools/swim-up bars
4. Higher floors have awesome views
5. Friendly, helpful, efficient staff

Cons:
1. Towel game with prime palapa and beach chairs reserved early.
2. Mexican and Italian restaurant reservations require waiting in line at noon or eating after 9:00
3. Main restaurant could be more creative

Room Tip: Floors over 5th floor have best views. avoid first 2 floors if possible as we heard they are loudes...
