“Great place to relax, sun, beach, snorkel at Cozumel”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 23, 2010

We have now been to Chankanaab twice in the past year--visiting on cruise ships in Cozumel---the Costa Atlantica in Feb 2010 and the Grandeur of the Seas in Nov 2010. We lucked out both visits--good weather. This park is a short taxi ride from the cruise ship port (about $10 US each way). The entrance fee is high $17--but you can stay and visit all day. It has a well developed park and facilities, a large shopping area and restaurants. It offers a ride the dolphins experience for all--which is awesome. It has a childrens beach area. And then it has what we went for--a great beach, palapas, facilities for snorkeling and diving. The palapas are everywhere and part of your fee. Their are changing rooms, and for $10 you can rent snorkeling equipment. You enter the water right away through great platforms. But be aware--it gets deep fast to about 25 feet. You can snorkel around and see all kinds of tropical fish--saw baracudas and rays this time. There is a Christ statue to visit in about 25-30ft of water, and many Spanish cannons in the bottom to explore. Nice thing--is that you can stay all day there--there is no rush like on the snorkel and dive boats--which you can see come and go outside the protected Park area. We basically spend the whole day here snorkeling and relaxing. You can see the cruise ship port down the coast and it is easy to return--no trouble.

“Very Happy with Chankanaab”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 15, 2010

Have been to Cozumel several time and not gone to the park. Did go to the Park on a stop over from cruise. $59 for park entrance and a swim with the Manatee's. Very pleased with the swim (very close and plenty of hands on time with the manatee). The park was very clean, as well as the beach and a free locker with the park entrance. Would recommend it. Did not try the food, but did see that they were prices you would expect to pay in the US.

Didn't do the dolphine swim (have done that before in Cancun) but really looked like fun. They had them lift you out of the water on their noises. I didn't do that in Cancun.

“So Many Fun Things To Do in One Place”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 19, 2010

There are a wide variety of things to do at Chankanaab like snorkeling, snuba, driving, taking a stroll around the lagoon, swimming with the dolphins etc. It was perfect for my cruise vacation as there were so many activities to choose from in one place.

I snorkeled and tried snuba for the first time and I had blast.

Upside

They offer a wide variety of fun activities. They serve you drinks on the beach.
They have a highly organized professional staff. They have lockers, and clean showers.
The bathrooms are clean.
You can rent equipment

Downside

The food served on the beach was nasty. I would suggest bringing your own food or you eat at a local restaurant.

I give it 4 and a half stars

“Family fun with lots to do”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 5, 2010

We had looked for affordable activities to do in Cozumel and I found reviews on this website that made Chankanaab sound like a nice option. We printed out the $2 off coupon(you can search on google for it) and decided to try it out. We went on a cruise and last Saturday, Oct 2nd, our cruise was in port at Cozumel. (from Punta Langosta port)

We got a taxi easily after getting off the port area and it was $13 for 5 of us(4 adults and one 2 yr old) to get a ride to Chankanaab. It took about 10 minutes to get there.
Kids under 3 yrs old are free to get into Chankanaab, so we paid $17 per adult to get in. Regular price is $19 but they accepted the $2 off coupon I had printed out.

There is a pretty, tropical walking trail area that takes you to the Mayan replicas. The replicas are not very big but were still nice to look at. There was so much shade that the temperature felt nice while walking on the trails. The lagoon is not far from the replicas and is a really pretty, light turquoise blue. There was even more to see on the walking paths but we wanted to spend more time in the water instead. We walked around first before changing into our swim suits.

I read about renting snorkel equipment while in the park. Make sure you check a couple places because we got our mask ,tube, fins and a locker for only $10! Another place wanted $15 in the same park. The place we rented from was near the center of the beach area. Use a FREE life vest, they are available right by one of the water stairs. You do have to leave ID when you take a life vest from a man who asks you some info.

You have to step down stairs to get into the water to snorkel. It's a few feet deep as soon you step in so have your gear on before going in all the way. Along the shore there are several stair areas to enter the water, much more than I thought there would be, which was great. We went snorkeling but the water was very choppy that day. Since the water was a little rough no one lasted very long. We would snorkel for about 30-45 minutes at a time, then take turns/breaks. We saw some striped and bright fish and schools of fish swam right next to us, you could basically touch them they were so close.

For people who don't snorkel or have kids with them, there is a small, sloped beach area. Right next to it is also a playground area for kids. My son liked it. He also just liked digging in the sand under shade while me and my husband took turns snorkeling.

There were plenty of shaded areas to sit and lay next to the water. Also there are a couple cafes to eat at, plus snack shacks in between. You are offered drinks while on the beach, but it wasn't bothersome. You can get them to bring you sodas or drinks and I think food too. No one was pushy.

For an extra cost you can swim with dolphins! We didn't do that or any other things that cost extra inside the park. But we could see the dolphins jumping a lot.

We ate while there. The cafe we chose was near the center of the beach. The food wasn't so great and not that cheap. We got a "Mexican plate" for $12 that me and my husband shared. I wasn't very full but we just wanted to eat something since we had gotten really hungry by the early afternoon. We wondered if the cafe near the beginning of the beach would have been better. They had musicians playing at that one! Just keep in mind to check out your options. Things are spread out but not so far that you can't pop over to a couple to compare before deciding.
There are souvenir shops inside and right outside the park. The larger store inside the park, next to the dolphin swim area, sells biodegradable sunscreen if you need to buy it. We bought some for $13. They also sell sodas, water, underwater cameras($22, overprice but available), trinkets, etc.

We were there for 4-5 hours and could have easily stayed longer if we had more time. But we wanted time to shop back at the port area since it was our first time in Cozumel. To get a taxi back to the ports, you go back to the entrance of the park and there are men sitting there who get you a taxi right away. There were many taxis parked to the side ready to take people. The man charged us the same amount to go back to the port. You just ask before you even get into the taxi what they are going to charge you and then once you agree, get in and enjoy the ride.

We would definitely visit Chankanaab again if we go on another Cozumel cruise. It was beautiful with lots of activities, not crowded, and was family friendly.
